Not that sad, as it is being remastered.
https://gematsu.com/2018/09/the-last-remnant-remastered-announced-for-ps4

(They said it would be removed by September 4th, but it is still on Steam and it is September 11th. Go figure.)

At the time I posted, the "Purchase" button was still there. It's gone, now, however.

It's purchase disabled, and it has also been pulled from various digital retail stores. More or less 'removed' to me.

If memory serves me right it was famous at the time for being a Square Enix JRPG that finally got a PC port. I remember a pretty bad combat system where you could spam the A button to win everything and a quite whiny teen protagonist. It won't be missed, but i hope for a sale before getting removed just for the sake of my collection.

They may not of been common but the PC release of FFVII predates it by over a decade.

What thresher means is it was a Square Enix JRPG that had a proper, fully featured PC release, not a half-baked port.

I didn't say it was the FIRST jrpg port, but that at that time not many of them were coming out on PC.

I never claimed you did I was just clarifying that PC releases weren't unheard of from them.

TLR would be a fantastic game if it wasn't for the battle rank system which ruined the entire game for me. Combat system would have been better if it gave you more control but I didn't mind it that much and I did find it pretty decent. Everything else about the game; graphics, story, world, races, lore was pretty good.

Punishing players for grinding in a JRPG to the point where winning some fights ends up being impossible is probably the most retarded thing ever done in the history of RPG's.

That being said I don't get why are they removing it. It's developed and published by the same company (SquareEnix) so it's not like it's a licensing issue. I guess the game had poor sales, but that doesn't seem like a good reason to pull it from the store, which will prevent sales altogether.

Well, there is a mod to deal with the whole battle ranking issue: https://steamcommunity.com/app/23310/discussions/0/2906376154333740815/

Wow, that's great! I had no idea this existed. If this mod is actually well balanced I can see myself getting back to this game again, because other than the game-ruining BR system I loved it.

Not sure if I want to buy it at full price. They should do a 75%+ sale for the final week. Is it really good? I've had it on my wish list for awhile.

Ha, funny thing about this. Look what got showed off today. Looks like it will be US$40.
Edit - Update, a US price of $20 has been mentioned elsewhere, much cheaper than what was expected from the JP price.

I wonder what they mean about "new elements". Seems like most complaints were about a monster ranking system? Waiting until I get a new gamepad before playing the original version.

A lot of the complaints I've heard about the game, and that also includes my own experience with it, was just how little it bothered explaining. You've got a potentially really deep game... that not even the people who data-mine it understand. Despite being a 10 year old games, there are still stats in it that people have no idea what they actually do.The game does not even properly explain its basic mechanics, so you kind of have to wiki-game it to make any educated decisions, and even then, as mentioned, there are stats that are not understood.

Square Enix like their ports at this point, PC will see it even if the current information only shows PS4.

Even then it was totally a dick move not making a sale before removing it from the stores. I won't spend $40 to buy (again) an old game.

It was on sale many many times before, everyone who really wanted the game got it already. And why would they make a sale while they have remaster in the works? That makes no sense.

"hey guys, we're retiring that game, here is a final sale before pulling it off the stores". It happened many times before (Blur, Castle of Illusion, Deadpool).
They just removed a perfectly working game just to release a remastered version back at full price.

Well of course they did.

"hey guys, we're retiring that game, here is a final sale before pulling it off the stores". It happened many times before (Blur, Castle of Illusion, Deadpool).

None of those you mentioned had remaster in the works. They made this so-called "final sale" just to boost sales of games nobody was rushing to buy. In most cases, those games with "final sale" returned to the store shortly after. They didn't do it because they were "good guys". They are companies making profit. Just like Squeenix with Last Remnant now. Why would they lower their potential profit by making a sale on a game they are trying to re-release? And again... the game is 10 years old - if you wanted to play it, you already did.

And don't get me wrong. I am no fan of remasters and multiple releases of the same game. As of now I have no idea if the remastered game will or will not have an additional value that would justify its existence and by default I am against practice like that. But expecting price cut on a game they are planning to re-release and sell once again, that's just naive mate.

Original versions of games are seemingly always removed from store when a remaster or enhanced or remake edition is released.

In the case of the Infinity Engine (eg, Baldur's Gate) games or Bioshock or the like, the original games are added in as freebies for the new edition's package, but perhaps more often you see games like Darksiders where the original game is simply removed altogether. In either circumstance, the game is typically treated as a new release, resetting past discount progression.

The games you listed (along with, for example, Mafia 1 or any of the Spider-Man games) were removed due to licencing issues (most typically, that means licensing rights over contained music expiring, though with Spider-Man it's due to the convoluted rights over the IP between Disney and Fox), so it's a rather different matter from games that are being replaced by different versions. As Winny noted, a sale under the latter circumstance would be in opposition to the publisher's best interests.

This is from the Tokyo Game Show - Japan doesn't care much for PC. When the Western announcement is made they'll probably announce PC (and maybe X1) as well.

Physical copies can be bought quite cheap and are activated on Steam too. Remember this if there won't be any sale.

Ah, exactly my thoughts. I was checking the ol' bidding stores for some hard copies since they removed the option to buy it. I can pick it up for the base price at least.

To wait for remaster or to cave, that is the question...

You'll still be dependent on resellers even for physical copies since they recalled all physical stock as well as digital.

I mean, it's been bundled multiple times, including in Tier 1, so you may still be able to get it through trades at a reasonably cheap price.

Calling the rerelease a remaster is kind of misleading. A new engine means it's more a remake than a remaster even if they can just carry over all the existing assets.
