I wonder if that's enough for him to buy the Elder Scrolls IP and tell Bethesda's lawyers to go fuck themselves for the whole Scrolls incident...

Good for Mojang! But Microsoft?! Wasn't really there a better way to invest 2.5 billion dollars? Of course Minecraft was a good intuition, but is the actual expertise behind a sandbox block game really worth that much? Or maybe they are simply after the royalties and/or desperately trying to get Xbox One some kind of relevant exclusive. <.<

Minecraft is one of the most popular games to be released. If Microsoft plans on developing Minecraft 2, they could make a small fortune.

Only an assumption, but it seems that the sales are down with Minecraft. Everyone who's willing to pay $30 for it, they already own it.
Basically, either Microsoft won't make much profit out of this deal, either they'll release Minecraft 2, or either Minecraft will be on sale regularly. (75% off anyone?)

So? M$ way too late to the party as usual and Mojang wasn't exactly profitable in any way by selling an overrated pre-beta blunder, or was it?

Love it or hate it, Minecraft is one of the most successful games of all time.

Possible, but it's not a franchise and already past its prime, so I don't get the purchase, but then again, is't nothing new for M$ to be ultra late.

"Possible?" It already is, the numbers speak for themselves.

No, they don't. Every damn game gets this stupid title because they skew them in any way they need to.

You know... Selling over 16 million copies of the PC/Mag version of a $26 game over the span of 5ish years.... coming in for a total of $416 Mill, As a indie developer.. With no financial backing at all. Then to sell it for 2 Billion... Ya... I call that profitable on Mojang's part. They were making a sizable chunk of change... And now the founders are sitting in a position where I highly doubt they will ever sweat paying their bills ever again. Hell... Notch could likely eat out at 5 star restaurants nightly and not blow that kind of cash.

And you know... There is still a copy sold every 3ish seconds...

Considering that the average earnings over a lifetime for an average joe in The United States is roughly 700k to 1.5 mill, This guy beat out a good portion of the world in lifetime income within the first year or two of this game going public.

26$

Ignoring all the 5$ alpha/10$ beta sales?

Even with that he is set for life, so is his kids, and probably the kids kids....etc....

Personally selling to MS was smart as all hell.

Probably, but in case you missed it, I'm talking about the acquisition, not the sale.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah but even with beginning sales being slightly cheaper the guy still solf tons of copies at his full price, more so then most games made...

End result is he is rich as all fuck. :-P

The acquisition is what M$ did: buy Mojang. That's a complete failure because years too late.
The sale is what Notch did: sell Mojang. Best thing he ever did. He was stalling anyway.

M$ isn't dumb, they will make money off this in SOME way, but yeah he was smart, why do any more when you can live well as shit forever basically...yep.

Wasn't alpha and beta $15/20 respectively? Those sales were marginal compared to later sales though.

Gabe Newell once worked at Microsoft.

I knew him then, I worked for a major computer manufacturer at the time and had several meetings with Gabe during his MS days.

While I doubt notch's cred would survive this, but I doubt he'd care having a chunk of 2.5bil dollars. But I gotta commend him for making the most out of his company; instead of it frizzling out leaving him without a money folk, he cashed it in big time.

if you could buy minecraft for 5 dolars on a summer sale, with trading cards and steamworkshop... would you let it pass?

I still think it's insane they are spending 2.5 million on this company. They could make like 2 or 3 new studios with this money, or they could even buy out some big companies like United Front Games, Sumo Digital, or something, make Sleeping Dogs exclusive.

If they are spending 2.5 million dollars I think it's 100% guaranteed they will make Minecraft 2 at some point. And it will probably be timed Xbone exclusive before coming on PC, and never come on Playstation.
