Also I suppose there's the question of decay; even though you live forever, does your physicality deteriorate over time, or are you a Dorian Gray that keeps a forever youthful body?

If all humans were to be immortal, then that would be a problem. We are 7 billion now, think what will happen after 20 years of immortality. We'll be a at least 10 billion(I think). Then there's the slight matter of employment. If nobody dies, how will young people find a job?

The question was posed for a single individual to become immortal, not the entire plane of the human race. Currently, the world's population growth is on the DECLINE. While it use to be as high as 11 births to 1 death it is now more along the lines of 4 to 1 and dropping lower. If the current trend continues, the human race could actually go extinct within a hundred years assuming the death rate stays the same. The population is currently slated to peak at 10-11billion before declining for the first time in history.

Actually, while the 3rd world still has greater growth then the 1st world, where some countries like Japan, USA, China populations decline, due to increased education in the 3rd world, birth rates in places like Africa, South America, Middle East even are seeing reduced birthrates. Granted, they are still much higher then developed nations they are still lower and seeing a steady decline in line with the rest of the world which if they continue as is, that is the rate of decline, the human population would see a decline.
Of course, once the population is thinned out, many social and economic problems that made it difficult to support children would be lessened and the birthrate is sure to spring back. Or so my prediction would be.

There's a fairly long list of pros and cons if you really think through the longevity of everything in existence. Everything and everyone you love will die and decay. On a long enough timeline, nothing lasts forever. Everything man-made is subject to natural decay and if you were immortal even the things you built yourself would one day crumble. Even the simplest of things would require constant maintenance and care. Books turn to dust, computers may well fall along with mankind. Any home you build up or ship you take to the stars in, you will outlive all of it. Since it was posed that you could be any kind of immortal I would just assume aging comes to a halt for you. I could easily carry on with this but its a bit much for this forum really. You have to think of something you would do, and then realize that everything but your lifespan has limits.

I have to agree that true immortality, when it is impossible to die, seems pretty horrifying to me. Imagine living for so long, that at some point most organic life would have died and you might be the only human left. Or that even if you are in great pain, hunger, whatever, you will keep feeling that way forever and ever...

Probably not. If it were just much more longer lifespan (like 1k, 2k), then why not? And by the way, what's the policy for getting "old"- are your hypothethical immortal people toddlers all the time, or they grow like normal people and stop once reaching "max level"?
If, let's say, we would grow up until our full adulthood (with full physical capabilities) and stop then, then being immortal would have one big advantage- nobody would be able to kill you, you could spend whole time mastering martial arts and become superhero!

People are selfish, so most will say yes. Just imagine billions of people being immortal, the earth wouldn't even carry all of those people. Even when we're mortals, there are still wars over lands and whatnot.

Somewhat true, but being immortal doesn't mean being strong. The technologically advanced countries
(Or it might become just individuals, since everyone will be selfish) will hog lands and resources.

I don't think that will deter everyone from making war. Some might actually make a sport of it, enjoying the non-stop "hunt" and attempts to reign supreme. Wars might actually last much longer, because of the immortality factor.
Also, they might still be able to inflict agony on people. Like if they can still fell pain, become disfigured or lose limbs, lose their sanity or like Ekaros wrote lock them in and make them suffer by depriving them of basic needs. Humans will adapt and be creative so they can still make other people feel miserable.

^ This. I think it would be terrible to live truly forever. Even if you stay young and you won't be inflicted by disease or anything else, you will still see everyone and everything you love die or disappear. At some point, no one will even remember you and your loved ones or the time when you were born or you lived through; it would only be stuff from the history books.
Also, I think it can be taxing on your mental health to see humanity do for centuries, forever, the same things they always do, despite knowing and wanting better; wars, poverty, abuse, extinction of species, pollution, etc.
I can imagine that would be frustrating to watch again and again,

Would you like to live forever? Personally, I'm fascinated by the idea of living forever, but I think immortality would become boring after a few thousand years.
