What games do you like?

View Results
WIth very rich story (eg. Silent Hill 2, Life is Strange, Cat Lady, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Talos Principle, Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, Max Payne 1, 2 etc.)
With good story (eg. Hitman: Blood Money, Remember Me, Alan Wake etc.)
With poor story (eg. Rise of Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 6, Hitman: Absolution, Dying Light etc.)
I don't care about story. (eg. Call of duty, Battlefield, DayZ, ARK, CS:GO, Rocket League, Unreal Tournament etc.)
Potato (eg. chips)

Personally I'd like a game to at least have a story, it doesn't have to be anything special it just has to exist

A game with good gameplay and a good enough story to support it. If I want to focus only on the story, I read a book or watch a film.

"Story in a games is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." - John Carmack

couldnt agree more, give me good gameplay, original or refined, complicated or very simple, extensive or very small, full of systems or scripted, if its good, ill like it.

I can go either way. There are games I couldn't stop playing because of the story, and there are games that I couldn't stop playing that barely had a story

I'm old. Generally, I say gameplay first, and graphics don't matter (but they help)
However, a really good story can make up for weak gameplay, and can be worth it on its own. This is especially true for RPGs and adventure games. For shooters, it makes a difference, but isn't critical. For strategy/simulation, it just doesn't matter.

but a good story can be the icing on the cake - portal is a fun series of puzzles, but the story elevates it to another level.

Ironically I've not yet played a single game you've listed ;) But taking the general concept I like a decent story but its the game play that means the most to me. e.g.one of my favourite game of all time is Morrowind, which a lot of people say has a decent storyline. However, its was such a good game I was playing it for two months before I realised there was a storyline .. So I think a good story helps but won't save a poor game.

I voted for rich story (I'm a literature nerd so yeah I would) but story isn't a make it or break it kinda deal to me. I can enjoy a game with a shitty story if it plays solid (I might even extract amusement out of the bad story)

Story is an important part of a game, if the game builds on it, but it's not the only thing and not the first thing for me. If the game has good mechanics and is fun to play, the story is secondary. Take Dark Souls for example, hardly anyone knows what's going on, but nobody really cares, people play it and became a smash hit.

Good story is the main component of a game for me (therefore I'm a point-and-click fan).

I think that a very rich story is great; but it shouldn't get in the way of the game.

Take Dark Souls, for example. I'd you're interested in how and why things ended up the way they did, there's a ton of reading you can do on the descriptions of various items; almost like an archeologist uncovering the history of the world. Or you can say "I'm going to hit that skeleton with a sword because videogames" and have fun that way. You get as much story as you want to experience.

On the opposite side, you have things like FireWatch where it's just a story, and no game; I couldn't care less. I'd rather go read a book.
