So... if you have a running giveaway for one, you may need to delete. And if you're trading for one, beware. And if you already traded for one and didn't activate it... whoops!

what's so low about it? the brand new game on day it comes out costs 15 cents due to price error. They do honor copies that got activated - I for one cas still play it, all they do is block ppl who tried to exploit price bug even further by hoarding copies to resell them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

At least in my country, a pricing error is the seller's fault. A customer doesn't have to deal with the purchase mistake. Besides, the seller CAN NOT limit or apply restrictions to an already purchased item.

I don't care what the exploiters do with their games, but it's not a good thing to change the restrictions in a item AFTER the money have changed hands

Well said. It's the seller's responsibility. Moreover, the price is to be set by the developer himself, not steam. He shouldn't have been so reckless.

A pricing error is the sellers responsabilit as long as there's no bad faith in the purchase and there is a reasonable basis for claiming that it was a goodwilled purchase.

Buying a thousand of them for profit when the game is 20 cents is does not fail in that. Also they have honoured the purchased, only region locked those that were still around (mind you from the start with the RU tag) Everyone buying knew what risks they exposed themselves to.

irrevellant as this time it was obvious price bug. you cannot be mad on them for locking copies of brand new game that came out this very day that were clearly hoarded for resell/trade. The people who wanted game for themselves and activated gifts still have a working game in their lib.

The gift clearly stated RU on it when I was accepting the trade, so the risk was clear, but one worth taking for the cost in my opinion.

Actually we do have a point to argue. At the point of sale, no where on the store page said it was region restricted. It was just like every other game. But it's Ubisoft so......

ya retroactively locking is extremely unfair (though maybe acceptable in this case because of price glitch) but steam hides behind their subscriber agreement. On the other hand, contracts can only protect you to a point.

Doesn't matter, I just gave away 3 copies to my Russian friends. I get to make someone happy, so why not?

I've been in this world long enough to know life is never fair and when it comes to Steam and Ubisoft, it's always a big fat middle finger the size of the statue of liberty in customers' faces.

How risky is it to activate a game like this thru VPN.. does it raise an automatic flag to Steam Support or do you need to be unlucky to get caught if only done once ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it doesn't rise anyflag. but if you're reported you risk ban. Also there is a risk that if in any case you will contact support in the future they may review your account, see VPN activation and permaban you. not really worth it over a 15 cents game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

15 cents game?
You meant 15 dollars game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was $0.20 on the Russian Store. So you're risking hundreds if not thousands worth of games in your library just so you can add a "$0.20" game through VPN.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Steam doesn't permaban over that anymore. They lock your ability to trade, redeem keys, or use other features; and my understanding is that they will unlock it for you once if you are properly contrite (although obviously you should follow the rules; you don't want to rely on that hope.)

You (probably) also need to use VPN every time you want to play this game, otherwise steam just tells you that you are in wrong region. I got fucked with a DmC ROW key once (I didn't activate it right away and about month later ROW wasn't so ROW anymore), activated it with VPN, played it few times, but in the end I got tired messing with different VPN services (decent ones need payed subscription). Last week I bought the correct region version from Steam and contacted the support to help me to remove the wrong version from my account so that I could add the correct one there. Now everything is nice and comfy - no need to mess with VPN.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well that just sucks, but this is respectively okay for Ubisoft to do this since it was a pricing error that occurred. Though the game is a very good game. This is probably the best way to tell the story of WWI since it was trench warfare. I don't think Activision or EA could ever make a good fps for WWI considering how formulaic COD and Battlefield are.

There wasn't any lock on the game when it was bought, so I have to disagree with you on this "that was okay thing to do, ubishit" thing.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But it is ok. You bought the game from a russian because it had a price error, don't pretend that you're the one getting hurt when Ubisoft locks the game just because you didn't activate it before the lock or kept it in your inventory to profit in the future. And why should Ubisoft be ok with losing money when it's most likely Valve who fucked up?

out of these 5$, 4.5$ would go to russian trader, 0,4$ to Valve and 0.1 to devs. So yeah - fuck them, they put montyhs of their work into this project, how can they expect any money from it? they should hand over all their games for free directly to you.

I love how some people are so upset about this. You took a risk at getting a game from another countries store which was priced wrong and exploited. Ya blame Ubisoft because they want to stop losing money. Quit being greedy crybabies. This is what happens when many try to cheat the system when mistakes happen.
