Ah sorry. On mobile so when I see a short link, I just assume the worst.

OT: Not sure how I feel about this dlc since I am not proficient enough in chess to make a judgement call. Looks like this should have been a patch but I can't say much.

I love it. Not only does it make the game have less hackers, but it also lets the game devs look at our secrete computer files. So stfu and be thankful. Ffs you are the reason why console gaming>pc gaming

For existing owners, nice that this is a DLC upgrade. For new buyers, sucks that they have to buy the game and upgrade to get the update ... they may have preferred to just buy a new 2015 version. Tough call.

What is difficulty settings.

It's not a matter of difficulty settings. Taking what they say on the store page at face value, this is a revamped version of the engine. Playing at the highest difficulty settings on a single core is still going to be easier than doing the same on a multi-core. More speed, more calculations mean, as Movac already explained to you, a smarter opponent.

Or all it will do is make same movements, just faster. In features they don't say "harder enemy", only "Play better faster with the world’s number 1 Chess Engine!"

Would be interesting to get some player to compare those versions.

They cater to a very specific market, not unlike the train simulators with thousands in DLC. For their audience, it's probably worth it and they know they can price it that way.

I'm wondering why they released this as DLC, instead of as a new standalone version.
I mean, if it really is a brand-new game engine that normally warrants a new release in other series.

Essentially it's new AI, not game engine... So graphics and such stays same, the game is just much harder...

I'm know that this is not about the main thread but I must ask you this.
How did you make a screenshot of full page and not only that what is visible only on screen? This is some special function of archive.is?

It's an archive link. Just visit archive.is and you can use it to archive webapges.

If you are interested there are addons that let you do full page screen captures.
But I have researched for 1 minute and I have found something amazing that I didn't know :O Thanks a lot!!!

In Firefox:

  • Press Shift+F2
  • Write: screenshot --fullpage
  • Profit

EDIT: OMG The developer tools are a gold mine!! They have a lot of more useful tools! :D I'm going to say goodbye to a lot of old addons :)

Now this is just mindless. Real, but mindless. Is this even legal?

How exactly it would be anywhere near illegal?

Many programs have cheaper editions that contain less features or other limitations.

It's standard, if you pay less you get less features.

Sure, I'm not against that. if you buy the whole program, you'll get everything that was mentioned right out of the box. THIS however is a DLC aka a purchasable patch, that updates the game to a new 64-bit engine.

But is the game just the same with this DLC? As far as I know, yes. It's the same, but with a better, more optimized 64-bit engine.

Is it a problem? Of course it is. Why do you want to pay twice just to get better fps from that game? It's not a rerelease.

Here's the thing about rereleases, definitive editions and HD releases. Take Deus Ex HR for example. It had DLCs in the past, sure, but in the Director's Cut edition, not only did they added all DLCs for free, but also updated the game significantly with major bug fixes, level redesigns, smarter AI and extras.

Now, the engine updates.

Shadow Warrior (2013). While the game's new version 1.5.0 is pretty much the same, it has an engine update: 64-bit mode and 32-bit mode.
32-bit mode had some optimization techniques, but it reached the limit where they can't optimize the game further, but it's still available for those who still own a 32-bit machine. 64-bit version however comes with better performance for 64-bit OSs thanks to more optimization techniques, which is why it runs at 60fps max on my mid-end rig.

This game however doesn't have that option, they released the 64-bit version behind a paywall. So if you want better fps, pay another 20$.

It's not graphics engine. It's an AI update. Equivalent would be strategy game to sell a DLC that contained new smarter computer opponent to replace already pretty good opponent.

Still, paying $20 sounds like a ripoff.

It's a real niche product. And not even that expensive one compared to competition. No regular player needs that. Only people who are deeply interested in chess. As such I see it as acceptable product to charge for.

So problem is it's called DLC? And if it was Basic and Pro licenses, it would be OK?

If you don't like, you should vote with your wallet.

What difference between this, and other "Director's Cut" or "Redux" edition? They are basically the same thing, except that the others released as a whole new standalone title and this a DLC. If you think the DC or Redux deserves their $$$, then this DLC also deserve the same level of $$$. If not, then let's all rant about not giving free revamp for Director's Cut edition too.

As it is truly enthusiast product I don't think there is anything wrong in charging for something that is essentially remake of core-part of product. Any regular player would do just fine with normal base version. And it's not really that pricy product with DLC in the market to which it should really be compared to.
