I just logged on and entered a couple of DOTA giveaways for the heck of it. They were ending in a couple of minutes and I actually won one of them. I didn't mind LoL but the playerbase wasn't so nice, hopefully this game will be more inviting.

So the usual garbage. Either you play absolutely perfectly or they hate you. The ONLY thing that matters is winning, fun is worthless. This is why I don't play competitive games.

Well if you say this, you are no better than those flaming players - both of you look only from a single perspective.
Dota is a game that is more enjoyable with friends AND people of the same skill level. The problem lies withing matchmaking system, which is far from perfect at this moment. At its best it should match you to equally skilled players, so the chance of someone raging because of the skill gap should be very low. Well, but we know what is the reality. Hopefully it will improve.
Not all people can be tolerant for others' flaws, and you need to keep that in mind. Most of them don't have a good temperament either.
Your description of situation makes sense to me, knowing you have a few days or months experience. Let's say I expect players to know much more than what every hero does and what are the timings of their skills. Luckily matchmaking does not match me to complete new players.
My advice would be to use 'Mute' command if you feel that someone is being unfriendly. Works best! I play dota 1/2 for 10 years and still meet some idiots that have little knowledge but will flame you on any occasion. Talking to them normally does not work, mute works.
