Hello SGers,

I'm aware that this site is probably the most inappropriate place to do this, but I don't know where else to turn to.
So to the point - I am looking for somebody who is working as a researcher, preferably as a microbiologist or something similar to ask some questions about their experience in the job. Problem is, I've tried contacting some organisations and associations but they don't get back to me. Do you guys know somebody/a website for me to get in touch with by email? It's just some basic questions like how they enjoy doing their job, work atmosphere... about 10 questions. Less if I'm taking too much of their time.

Thanks for your time and help in advance!

Edit: Thank you everyone for your help. I got some people here answering me through steam, as well as response on reddit. Again thanks!

I see nothing inappropriate in this question. There might be a user or two here that might know about this. If not, have you tried Redit?

I was hesitating to post on the r/microbiology because it seems like it's for new discoveries and such. I did send a private message to a mod on that thread about this but no replies... maybe I should go ahead and ask on that thread anyway?

Yeah, I think you should. That's probably the easiest way :)

I can't help you in any way here, but have a bump so hopefully someone who can actually help sees your thread :)
Best of luck!

Hmm? No, I don't think there is a problem with these questions?
Are you interested in microbiologists?
I feel like I used to know my acquaintance.
He is not present now. (He was researching mold)

So I can not think of a good way.
However, by watching related videos in "TED", there may be some useful information.

Thanks for the link, but I really want to get in touch personally with somebody doing this. I want to ask them my own questions. But appreciate your help.

Yes, I'm aware of the difficulty to become qualified, I'm prepared for that. But I want to know what somebody doing this job think of it, and reevaluate my decision if I have to.

I can't be of any help, but I thought it was a funny coincidence that I paused the movie I am watching to come check the discussions here and found this thread. I am watching Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940) :)

I'm only about half way through, but I am enjoying it so far. I watched The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936) not too long ago and enjoyed it a lot. I like these type of movies that deal with inventions, discoveries, or science.

I personally don't make use of Reddit, but have you checked there? Since there's a subreddit for pretty much everything (including microbiology), your chances of stumbling across a person in this line of work may be higher.

https://www.reddit.com/r/biology/
https://www.reddit.com/r/microbiology/

Also, if you're asking due to career choices, the Google search query "microbiology reddit" brings up various threads in these two subreddits that you could review and see if your questions are answered there.

[Edit] Ah snap, just noticed that was already brought up in the first comment. Well, no idea then, best of luck!

I did post grad in molecular biology a few years ago and I've still got some contacts at the lab - It's not exactly microbiology-related, but it's still biology-related. If that's alright with you, you can send me the questionnaire and I can forward it to them.

If not, I'd highly recommend you reach out to the people over at that Reddit thread. That's the best place to start your search.

Hey Hey! I know this, there is a social network specially made for scientists, you can look for microbiologists and contact them directly. https://www.researchgate.net
If you don't have any luck I would suggest the microbiology subreddit that bondguy linked.

Did you try to contact by email or phone? Usually if you want to get things done a phone call is more powerful and gives a better impression then an email that gets lost in the bulk. :)

Thing is I don't have any contacts of people working in this field, or even science... my family and close associates are doing business or art so the emails I've sent are people I found on the web. Phone numbers can't be found online... unless there is a legal way to do so?

There's always a legal way :). What are companies that work in the microbiology field? Perhaps a company that already peaks your interest? Inform them you are interested in microbiology, you like their company and if it is possible to perhaps talk to someone in their field. Or maybe also fun could be to talk to companies that have open vacancies and are activly searching for microbiologists. In the end the work atmosphere will probably difer a lot per company. So it could be interesting to see which companies actually take their time with students and see how they react to questionaires.
Various info you probably already know: https://collegegrad.com/careers/microbiologists
Companies current jobs, but there's probably many other websites : https://collegegrad.com/jobs/for/Microbiologist

You could always ask a question on Quora, that might be the best location for your needs. And specify if you are looking for general or location-based answers

I don't really use quora anymore after their data leak. Still, I might try it if reddit doesn't get me any response.

i have a biological technical assistant education and am currently studying biotechnology. i have 5 years of lab experience in microbiology.
But i dont have work experience in a company. i got my BTA education in 3 years were we worked in laboratories with real work conditions and after that i went to university and have 2 years of lab experience there.

The work there was in general fun. you prepare petri dishes with breeding ground for bacteria. make different experiments about bacterial cultures/ viruses/ yeast. write a lot of protocols about your research which is the annoying part of it :D
The work atmosphere is dependant of the experiment. sometimes it gets very hectic and stressful and sometimes not so much.
If you make a mistake and have not back up petri dishes or solutions you need to make another batch which can take several hours. so you must be prepared.

you can ask me further questions if you want.

I have a licentiate degree in biology, worked in research for 7 years, and I have 2 years of experience as QA analyst in microbiology for Pfizer. I'm currently only teaching, but if you are interested in having a chat, you can sent me a friend request on steam.

There are a couple of places you could try. There is probably a professional association/union that represents microbiologists in your area, possibly lumped in with some other professions. They often have free associate memberships for university students and provide career advice/support, information sessions and networking opportunities. They may be able to furnish you with some information, provide some contacts, or allow you to attend some of their events, and may even facilitate a meeting. They will probably be happy to help because they will see you as a potential future due-paying member. Some universities also have career mentoring programs as part of the career services sections of their student support services, and they may be able to arrange a contact. I've only ever worked with one person qualified as a microbiologist - she was in charge of running a municipal wastewater treatment plant, which is in large part a microbiological process (it's certainly the most critical aspect of the plant because of the time required to reestablish the microbial colonies should they crash).

I have 3 years of university education in food technology, this include microbiology, specifically bacteriology. I work on food making compagnies, such as Nestlé and Danone, mostly on chmistery, but did a but of microbiology.
Not sure I can answere your your questions but microbiology is a large field and even large applications. You may try to contact private compagnies for a free intership, first by sending a CV and a mtivation letter by mail/email and then having a phone contact.
You can ask information to science schools/universities too, it may be the better or easier way to get informations. Maybe ask for a former student contact, someone who would as a godfather.
