Hello guys,

Yesterday I've done some giveaways with multiple copies (In Public : For Lvl 2 / 3 / 4). So I did several tests to see user behavior in Public GAs.

I have questions about that :

Do you think it's "normal" that when people win a gift, they don't say a little thanks/feedback to the creator?

Personally I am quite amazed at the number of people who do not say thank you (Only 3 feedbacks on my 18 lasts copies GAs)...
For the moment, I don't blacklist anyone for this, but sometimes I hesitate...

Just to know : When YOU win a GA, do you write a little feedback to thanks the GA-creator?

PS : Sorry for my bad english,

There are two (yes, two!) little presents for you : here :D.
Thank you for reading, feel free to answer and have a nice day ! :D

Do you always thank the creator of a GA you just won?

View Results
Yes, that's the minimum to say "thank you" when we win.
No, I don't waste time with it.

You should always thank the GA creator if you've won a gift.
It's just good manners and gratitude imho. XD

Yes I agree with you, it seems to me inconceivable to not thank (even by a small message) the creator when I win a gift.

But you're right, for the moment my blacklist is empty, I'll maybe begin to fill it in some cases (But not everytime because I think everyone has the right to forget sometimes ^^).

If they don't forget to activate the game then they don't have the right to forget to thank the creator of the giveaway. I say blacklist them all!

Well it feels like some of the users don't even read the descriptions so saying simple 'Thank you' if you win could be too much to ask. I do mean that good manners should be kept and saying that little thing isn't too much to ask from anyone but I'm not really surprised that most of the giveaways don't get it from the winner. But there usually are many 'thank you for the giveaway!'-posts from guys and girls who don't win even before the giveaway ends! ^^

Oh, you are from Dr Who-land ^^ I didn't know, maybe I should have known because you have such a cute profile pic!

Different people have different behaviors.

For some " marked as received " also means " Thanks comment " too and for some others just pressing " marked as received " button isn't enough.

Don't think too much about this subject!. :)

Yes you are right too, each person reacts differently, it's actually not wicked but a little message of thanks is always nice.

Yeah, it's nice to hear something from the winner of your GA like a " thanks comment" or a " :) " smiley or etc.

But expecting the whole SG community saying sth after winning your giveaways is not logical.

The point is:

People say we blacklist them. Yeah, it's your right to decide who must have access to your GAs but in my view, BL users for not saying thanks is pointless because It's like a cat & mouse game that don't worth to spend your energy and your time for it.

How many new users join SG every day?

How many new users with-no-thanks-after-win will join your GA and probably will win your GA without saying thanks?

You will BL a new one and another one will join your next GA. You will add another one and a new one will join your next.

You think you less the number of users with-no-thanks-comment-after-win to your GAs? i don't think so!

If you really need to hear thanks from the winner of your GA, you should mention it in your GA description. At least you will warn users about your need to hear thanks!

Personally, i'm not agree with using the blacklist feature to restrict access of " winners with no thanks comment " but it's weird for me to see someone who you have gifted him/her a game for free but he just walked away from you without saying anything.

It's common courtesy for me. More often than not, giveaway winners don't bother posting anything at all, which I find rather rude. The winner isn't a 10 y/o kid anymore in most cases, just makes me wonder why their parents haven't taught them any manners. We're not your mom, so we shouldn't be the ones to tell you and give out reminders to thank someone.

Indeed, I think that there are not too many child on steamgifts.
However, I don't think this is especially a problem of education. In fact, most people don't have the same behavior on Internet and IRL ^^.

Agreed. I often wonder how these people must act in real life if they can't be bothered to post a simple "thank you" message on a giveaway. I believe it's a combination of upbringing (or lack thereof), lack of common courtesy, and even a sense of entitlement I am seeing more and more the older I get. It almost seems (especially after reading some of the forums threads lately) that some people feel as if they're owed free games.

It's discouraging, more than anything.

Yeah i feel it too. Especially on blacklist topics :D But i had a different look when i visited the forums on steam for this group. It's like this site promises them free games if they spend $100 on steam. People were pretty upset about this rule.

I always say thank you to the giveaway creator when I win a giveaway here. I don't expect that people do it on my giveaways (and I won't blacklist them if they don't), but it's certainly nice to see that people appreciate it. I once had a person posting on a more than three months old giveaway that they just tried the game with friends and really enjoyed it. I think that was the best kind of feedback that I ever got here :)

Oh yes, your example is a nice feedback ! I've never encountered such a case, perhaps one day in the future ^^.

The question in the poll and thread aren't correlating. Both of them are yes. Yes, I thank when I win, and yes, it is normal to receive only a few thanks after public GAs. I have put up over 140 keys in the past 20 days and received about 15 thank you messages from winners. And this ratio is rather normal based on my experience.
I have to add that in many cases they are too shy because of not sure even about this one-word English phrase or because what we consider common courtesy is not actually that common around those parts and that is normal for them.

Permalink

I am not sure there is any culture that you won't thank when someone gives you something. I mean it should be pretty common around the world. :/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes you are right, in general, winners of "Public GA" don't thanks the creator (but for me we mustn't make any difference, even if we can differently thank a creator of a gift for his whitelist with more gratitude for example), so my questions are perhaps not in total correlations, but it was rather to have a general opinion on the topic ^^.

It's inconceivable to not thank someone for a free gift. :O I thought this was a given.

Yes I think the same, but in reality this is not the case. For example, I think on your 46 sents GAs, you didn't obtain feedback by winners on 50% of them (maybe less : 30% ?).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hm, I must confess, I sometimes forget to say thanks (at first), mainly when I see the new wins in the morning on route to work. I activate and confirm them immediately to the sender does not have to wait, but sometimes I decide to do the "write something and whitelist" later when I have more time... and as we all know, out of sight, out of mind... But I know myself so I usually check up on myself from time to time :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

First of all : Thank you for your comment :-).

This can happen to forget in some cases (when you are in the car or just before leaving for work for example...). This does not mean you are a bad person ^^. It's for this I don't really want to directly BL peoples (I think everyone can forget these things sometimes) ;).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wouldn't it be better to wait with activation (and marking as Received) until you have enough time to also thank the giveaway creators?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep, that's what I do. For example, the morning, when I have to go to work, I wait to click on "Received" because I know I'll not especially have the time to activate the key and to thank the creator ^^. So I wait that I have time to do everything.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess it depends on your point of view... If I wait, I make the gifter wait for his confirmation until I get around to actually think about whether I have anything clever to say etc (which most of the time ends up just a simple thanks anyway)...

When I make GAs I usually take positive note when someone replies but I think I'd be more anxious about having to wait for the little green check mark :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is not false, sometimes if you do not receive feedback quickly, it can block you for creating other GAs, but I usually click on "Received" within 24 hours :).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Although it's common, it's still very disappointing. Especially if someone cannot give much (e.g. is Level 0 or has a bad ratio), the minimum they can do is write "thank you" after winning. In these cases I usually do add them to my blacklist if they don't.

BTW, I always follow up when winner thanks me with something like "Enjoy! :-)" or similar. I just can't help it.

When people give you a gift in real life, you thank them. Not so much because of the gift, but because of the gesture, because it means they care about you. On Steamgifts however people don't give you gifts because they care about you, but because the RNG selected you as a winner of the giveaway. Appreciation should go to the RNG, more so than the person.

I think thanking people for creating the giveaway in the first place makes more sense than thanking them for delivering a gift to the person chosen by RNG. Regardless, I always thank the person when I win their giveaway, and since most people don't want to be spammed with "thank you" messages for creating a giveaway I mostly chose not to say anything before winning, unless the giveaway is for a game I'm really excited about.

Even so, I personally do blacklist people who don't thank me for winning my giveaways.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had never thought about the idea of "gift because we appreciate the person".

On the other hand, I never neither say "generic thanks" before to win to not spam. Unless it's a giveaway for Whitelist or for some little groups for example.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Bit flawed thinking there. Even if the selection is done primarly by the system, there still exists some level of selection by the contributor. First by selecting which type of giveaway is created (some restrict more than others) and afterwards by deciding to agree with the system. In some cases it is possible to demand for a reroll or even just skip sending the gift. So praising RNG is understandable but there are other factors too.

Permalink

I give people three or more days after they marked their giveaways as received to drop me a note. I even write every of my winners a personal email to their adress they can reply to if they want. If they didn't care to write something small back by then, I go ahead and blacklist them. Just as you I'm finding it rather rude and I prefer not to gift more games to people who find manners or common courtesy unnecessary.
I always thank the people who gift me games - I'm always really excited when the space cate jumps at me. I only enter for games I really want and therefor every win is really really appreciated. I think this excitement and the joy of winning should be shared with the creator. In my experience it can make someones day. I had some lovely encounters only through thanking.

Ah, that's a good idea to send an email to your winners, this can actually afford to get nice feedbacks, but this must take you a long time :O,
Concerning entries in games, it really depends on the people. Indeed, some players enter only in games they absolutely want to win to play it, others are more collectors etc...

Of course it takes longer than just clicking on the key's send button, but I have made a template in which I only exchange they game every time and it's an okay effort to me. I think it's a fair thing. I want to hear something personal from the people I gift games to, so I make myself heard as a person instead of being an anonymous key appearing magically on a giveaway site ;)

I prefer people not to post generic thanks messages on my giveaways, however once they have won something it takes no effort whatsoever to then go back and post a proper thank you. Those who don't just end up blacklisted and I don't have to worry about them again.

In my opinion I don't really mind.

Usually, if I win a giveaway I will leave a thanks message, one of the reason is that the creator might blacklist me if I don't to be honest.

The truth is, Internet consists of people around the world, with different culture and manner. I've seen some creators who want thanks message and some don't. Some of both even threatened to blacklist if winner/people who join don't do what they write (to my understand, they wrote "you know what happened to people who join and don't say thanks").

It's hard to please everyone.

I love that song. :)

Is it normal that people just accept the games without saying a thing? Seems so to me. Not the courteous thing to do, but normal. Far as I remember that was also the case for the train I made, so it's not limited to public giveaways.

I don't win GA's, so don't normally thank givers except on the rare occasions that I look at the giveaway list and see a game I appreciate seeing, and then thank for giving it.

I stopped entering giveaways in March 2013, and have been selective even before. I have a total of about 1000 giveaway entries (I stopped at 999 using the "old count", which was replaced at some point by a count that also includes deleted giveaways, so my total is 1004 now). I continued giving occasionally, although for now I've stopped, because I want a feeling of giving charitably, and the SG game doesn't provide that. If SG ever adds a condition of "won fewer than x gifts" then I will probably start giving again.

It's always nice to receive a thanks from the winner, at least you have the impression that it's appreciated and not simply swallowed away by a silent leecher or bot. I'll for sure give one the day I finally win a GA :p
I don't BL people for it though, tbh I'm more bothered by Lv.0/1 with poor ratios (200+ wins for none or one 0.99$ GA) so I started restricting the entry level of my GAs to 2+
