I highly doubt that's intentional...
I mean they must have learned from Sim City, right ?

I just tried it myself with Civilization V and I'm getting the same error when trying to start the game in offline mode. Wouldn't be as much of an issue for me but I still doubt it's intentional.

I play Civ 5 in offline mode without any problems. Maybe its some bug/issue right now or with the files.

I don't have the game. I don't know why some users have this issue and others not (maybe geographical restrictions?). I just want to inform about what the store page for the game says.

It is some glitch with Steam or Game DRM - one of them want to check online if you bought the game, but since you're offline it can't.

And apparently if it happens to you, you're fucked.

Only thing you can do is start game online, then quit and go offline and start it again hoping it will remember it's all legit.

Well, that or downloading some crack...

So the game now has to communicate with the Steam servers before launching

in regular mode it's always been that way, and in offline mode it's dependent on the game whether that is necessary or not.

I'm not sure if they could get away with adding extra DRM after release

they can if they want, but that's not what's going on here. steam just needs to get online to verify ownership once again. every so often steam is going to need to get online to insure you aren't just running cracks to make games show up in your library that aren't technically owned.

Then we could say that steam offline needs to be set to june 8 to work, after the user findings, its his experience. Thats clearly not intended.

but, you just sent me to a post stating how it's fully working as intended. which is it?

according to this steam must be fully updated in order for offline mode to function. the only possible way to stay updated would be to go online occasionally.

Fully updated on this context mean to have the latest version when you attempt to do such a thing. Not to keep updating it over the years. At least thats what my interpretation of the text is.

i don't see how you got that from this context.

the Steam client application's files need to be updated.

Ok this is a little confusing to talk over two messages with the same person. i am going to reply to both here.

Whats intended (without bugs) = steam offline mode work indefinetly. What happened to the user = didnt work unless he changed the time clock. I think its obvious that if the offline mode wont work for certain games in certain dates, it means its not behaving as it should. Bugs happens, that dont mean his user experience is the de-facto way the mode works on.

"the Steam client application's files need to be updated."
This is just like the generic "keep your video drivers updated" message that game companies do. Just updating to the latest drivers wont solve shit in many cases, but its the standard way of testing to make sure everyone is on the same page before troubleshooting.

So in case a old steam version have a bug, the company want you to always have your application up-to-date (which may bring NEW bugs, but that wont be mentioned). You update the client to make sure its working according to what valve have. That dont mean you have to keep updating it for it to work.

none of this changes the fact that i've had steam tell me in order to play in offline mode i needed to update the steam client which inherently means i must go online......

Yes, and I am saying user experience dont mean its the de-facto way it should work. Bugs happen.

Did steam specifically said to update or was another message? So far I only read people saying it couldnt connect to the servers or offline mode wasnt available, or the login info wasnt saved.

The "offline mode wasnt available" on a user I talked to was right after he closed steam while online, disconnected and launched again (without going into offline mode). Meanwhile when I tried that, steam said it couldnt connect to the servers and asked if i wanted to go into offline mode. Another example of something that happened to a user that shouldnt have.

it has been years honestly so i can't remember what the dialog box said precisely, but it wasn't a normal bug type of error if i remember correctly. it was something to the effect of telling me the credentials were outdated and steam needed to go online to update.

edit: i had been in offline mode for ~45days though, so it didn't surprise me at all that it needed it after that long.

I cant say the error was the same but I user I talked to had a credential error after one day in offline mode.

in my instance it had worked quite a while for me, but then eventually i had gotten the credential error.
(i think this dialog box i found was the one that appeared, but like i said it had been a while now, i could be mistaking)

Discovered that if you roll your date back, launch the game, and then return your date to the current one, the game will continue to launch. I will also report that it is not only 2K games affected, as I am having issues with Football Manager 2016 as well.

Are you on the Steam beta client? I've noticed occasionally they break offline mode, but if you report it, it gets fixed pretty quick.

This issue has appeared to have been fixed if you opt into the Steam Beta Client.
