My impression was that they make nothing. Sure they take that 30+-% on steam store, but the keys for external stores are negotiated between the dev/publisher and that store, and they are considered Retail, thus they are free for the developers to sell.

Steam/Valve makes no additional money from sale of games on other sites. HOWEVER, they are still might be paid, depending on the negotiated rate for use of their DRM and hosting services. How much, is unknown and it likely changes anywhere from free usage, to a few thousand dollars a month depending on contracts and dev company size.

I highly doubt they make any per key activation money. IE, I doubt they make money everytime a game is activated such as 20 cents per activation of a game. Most contracts are paid out in chunks. Years/months.
