Is this a predecessor to the game "legend of mana" from 2000? really looks and sounds like it, just wondering as it is my very favourite game of all time and would immediatly buy this one on release if that's the case. 😃

Yes, Secret of Mana was one of the original games on the SNES.

There's a game currently on Early Access called Goken. It's no Legend of Mana but it's a great little Action-JRPG

The original is also being included on the SNES Classic console being released soon.
Also, the sequel "Seiken Densetsu 3" is considered very good, and has also been a major inspiration for many modern pixel artists.

the sequel "Seiken Densetsu 3" is considered very good

Quite.

From the Steam store page:

Originally released in 1993, Secret of Mana is by far the most popular title in the “Mana” series

I think the only reason they can say that is because Seiken Densetsu 3 has never officially been released as a "Mana" game; certainly, among most of the people within my social circles, it's considered the best of the series.

Legend of Mana is the fourth part of the "Mana" series, Secret of Mana is the second part (Seiken Densetsu Series)

There are a few games after Legend as well. Check out this wikipedia entry for a list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mana_(series)

There's also Secret of Evermore.

But that's a gaiden/spin-off game at best. Gameplay-wise it plays like the Mana series, but it's not considered part of the franchise, and in terms of setting, tone & writing stands on it's own as well.

EditL wikipedia article mentions that as well. Managed to overlook that first time aorund.

what goggles? you are assuming too much, I didn't own a SNES nor own it now. I played it recently on an emulator and although its pixelated because of the low res. the art style is far better than this 3D cash grab.

Agreed. Snes looks much better. Why would some1 want a remake of that game? It was already perfect.

I prefer the original on my retropie, even if I can only get it to work with 1 or 2 players.
It's not piracy if I own the cartridge and an SNES, right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not piracy as long as ýou use the original cartridge to play

As far as I know emulating is fair game when you own the original ROM but I'm no expert.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's only fair game if you rip the game from your own physical cartridge. Downloading someone else's ROM is piracy regardless of if you own the game or not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So basically you need an extra piece of equipment for each console to rip cartridges to make it legal.
Well, I'm not big into emulation anyway (too many recent titles yet unplayed) but I'll stop spreading this misconception then ;)

If someone owned Super Mario World and wanted to download it off the internet and play it on the PC. I doubt anyone would judge them, even the most moral of people would struggle to pick holes in it.

But the law is the law and it's a little dumb on situations like this. :D

Nintendo simply claims that emulation is piracy, so who cares. (This didn't stop the S/NES mini though :D )

Never got into the secret of mana... I much more preferred the FF 2 & 3 games on SNES (the US ones). The ipad remakes of those were garbage... hope they do better for you guys on this remake... I just hope that the highly anticipated FF7 remake isn't a let down!

I loved the original one (and still own it on SNES) ^^
This remake doesn't look too bad, but I don't think that it's gonna be as good as the original one.
Looking forward to give it a try :D

Thanks for the info!

An old favourite SNES game. I had kept my original SNES version boxed and all, until last year when I decided to sell it along with some other classics. I'll be glad to get a decent remake, but I'm not holding my breath...

0 originality ... and this 3d just breaks the ambience in my opinion .

To be fair, this game deserves a remake more than most of the games that are getting remade. This game is over 20 years old and hard to obtain while most of the others are 5-10 years old and still easily playable. This remake is very welcome to people like me who never got to play the original.

Let's hope they don't botch it as they did with their FF remakes. Considering what they turned FFXV into, I don't really like this statement: "Upgraded Gameplay - The original system has been reworked in an effort to realize a modern action RPG with improved gameplay."

Just saw the price. US$40? This is bad comedy, especially considering that for US$80 you can get a snes mini and play the original along with 20 other games, which works out to less then $4 each. I'm sorry but updating the graphics does not make it worth 10 times the price to play this one title

Permalink

There's also voice acting, which iirc, wasn't in the original. But yeah, $40 is a bit too much still.

40$ is WAY too steep ... does it even have online multiplayer? It's the co-op that made this game great

Nope. Local co-op only. For $40 it should really have online co-op

Why would some1 want to create a "Remake" of a game that was already perfect? (Yes, because of the cash.)
I prefer the original pixelart look, while I don't like the new 3d mobile game style they chose for the remake...
... ah ye, and I prefer paying 80€+ for the original on ebay, before I would try out the remake for 40€ srsly.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They're remaking it because the original came out over 20 years ago which means it's pretty hard/expensive to be able to play it now. Remastering it will introduce it to a brand new audience, like me. This game is older than I am so I never got to play it, but I'll buy this remake because I've heard it's one of the best games on the SNES.

when i saw your post i was so excited ! then i look at the steam page and saw the awful graphics... 40 € for that, when the old sprite are even better, id say i pass. And will put my super nintendo out when i can to play this gem of a game a bit :3
