Game Maker Blog

GameMaker Studio version 1.2.1214 was just released, and with it comes an offer to upgrade to the Standard edition free of charge. Valued at $50, GameMaker Studio Standard is a significant improvement upon the free version of the software which imposes harsh restrictions on the resources that developers can make use of.

Additionally, developers can use their free Standard edition license to upgrade to the Professional edition for only $50 more. It’s likely that this is a time-limited offer, so if you’re using the free version of GameMaker Studio be sure to act quickly

The option to upgrade to Standard is displayed after starting GameMaker Studio. Make sure you have updated to version 1.2.1214 of GameMaker Studio. As the update is part of the beta updates channel, you may need to right click the GameMaker icon in your system tray and select the correct updates channel.

I got my serial code in my inbox and tried to license it in the GameMaker application (as seen in original post.) Does it tell you whether the code was validated or not? I can't tell the difference between the Free and Standard edition just by looking at the overlay.

Unless the only reason you want gamemaker is to play games that people post on steam workshop. In this case, lack of steam makes it rather pointless.

Similarly you need the Steam version to post games you make onto the workshop.

However, it's still pretty silly not to take advantage of this. They give you a key so you can reinstall it later if you want.

For those who update and still dont get the prompt, make a new project, then "Help" > "Update License" in top bar.

I second this.
For the long time user maybe they don't have problem with it but for a newcomer, it looks very cluttered.
And that pure black and green skin...ugh. What does they thinking when designing that interface?

Yes, but you can change the skin to the old white style :P

I get an access violation at address 0144AF69 in module '5piceIDE.eve' of address 00000000 error after updating to the latest version :/ After that I can't even start GM Studio (win7).

I eliminated this error by switching from my mobile internet provider to wireless... so probably the problem came from your internet connection.

No idea how, but it just suddenly started working :D I've upgraded to Standard and I'm waiting for the Professional key if the promo mentioned above is still on. :) Thanks DeepWolf for the info!

I'm getting this same error =/ Even after reinstalling, I don't think it was doing it until I updated either. I submitted a help ticket to see what they said. I might uninstall and not let it update to see if that's what's causing it.

The error appears after updating to 1.2.1222 (my version was 1.2.1135.28030 and that was from the link on GameMaker blog) Free. Not Standard or Professional. Just to see the welcome screen, where you can sign up for the Standard key.

I used both keys in the "primary licencse" field under "Help" -> "Update License" and both worked fine. The first successfully licensed the standard edition and the other key (from here) activated as "Professional Edition" (However, I think it really only unlocked the "Tizen" Module from the Professional Edition and not the remaining features from Pro like Mobile Testing).

BUT, everytime I got to "Help" -> "Update License" it still says "This copy of GameMaker Studio is unlicensed, Please enter your license key". I can then enter again one of the keys I got in the primary field and it says it activated fine and I have to restart. But after restarting GM it still says "unlicensed". Is this the normal behaviour?

There won't be later things like "upgrading to professional version was free, but now you will have to pay us 99 $ monthly fee". I've checked already standard version and it seems fine and "safe" but ya know like they say abundans cautela non nocet

Thanks to OP (Deepwolf) and BrandeX for the instructions on how to get this to a fully free Pro version. Great deal.

Only question, anyone know if it is possible to get the Mac OSX export option back after upgrading to Professional via Tizen?
EDIT: looks like it is not possible to keep Mac OSX export and the Tizen modules for free. Link

So while you do get some of the Professional features from upgrading with the Tizen module you will lose MAC OSX Export.

Just a heads up. Might want to also grab and watch ENIGMA Development Environment
From the about page:
"ENIGMA, the Extensible Non-Interpreted Game Maker Augmentation, is an open source cross-platform game development environment derived from that of the popular software Game Maker. Its intention is to provide you with a quality game creation tool and a bridge between high- and low-level programming languages. It can be used either through an IDE, namely, its sister project, LateralGM, or through a Command line interface. Like Game Maker, ENIGMA comprises both an easy to use Drag & Drop system as well as its own programming language. This programming language, known as EDL, is essentially a mix between C++ and Game Maker's GML. Part of ENIGMA's goal is to remain backwards compatible with Game Maker, serving for some intents and purposes as a Game Maker compiler, however, EDL offers many very powerful features which simply aren't present in the alternative. Such features include the ability to compile DLLs and other C/C++ scripts right into the program and access C++ types, templates, and functions. Although EDL adopts GML's very lax syntax in its scripting, the inputted code is actually parsed and translated into valid C++. This compilation improves size and performance of the language by incredible amounts, while almost magically maintaining its simplicity of us."

There is also Unity which provides its standard version for free and the pro version has a 30 day free trial.
Some Steam released games have been made with Unity. You can release products with the free version.

From the FAQ:
"Can we sell games and make money with the free version of Unity?"
"Yes you can create and sell a game with the free version of Unity, without paying royalties or any revenue share. However, the free version of Unity may not be licensed by a commercial entity with annual gross revenues (based on fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000, or by an educational, non-profit or government entity with an annual budget of over US$100,000."
"Please also be aware that the feature set of the free version is not intended for the production of professional games and interactive content. Lastly, games made with our Pro trial licenses may not be distributed nor used for commercial purposes."

Ya, I already have unity installed on my PC. It looks very nice and I think it works lil better than GameMaker.

And there are planty learning materials. There is even channel on youtube with live tutorials.

But thanks anyway :)

I think that I will start learning with something more simple... like making sprites :) and than slowly will try things harder with programming and stuff.

Just got the email myself.
Awesome deals from Yoyo. First a free Standard Edition. Then a free Limited Pro version (limited to Windows and Tizen modules) for free. Easy to switch back and forth between those by going to Help > Update License and changing the license when a project is loaded (can be checked on Help > About).
Now a nice upgrade from the Standard to a full pro version for only $25. (Glad they made it till Friday Dec 6, need another paycheck after all these sales).

Seems like a good deal if you want all the features of Pro and not just Windows + Tizen as modules.

Ok guys I have lil'question...

As far as I know I have GameMaker: Studio Professional (Tizen) version (which is NOT full professional) but still whenever I start program I see on the taskbar that is is shown as a Professional version...

But... when I open "update licence" option I see text: "This copy of GameMaker: Studio is unlicensed please enter your license key"…

So which is it... is it licensed or not O.o I find this program a lil' bit too complicated for me... but sometimes I think that my version of GameMaker doesn't know either what it really is.

Would you be so kind to check in your options if you see anything about not being licensed?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it does that because if you look in help about these free licenses do not have a name associated.

Under Help > About it will say "Registered To: None" and then have a license key under it.

I played around with some of the Pro features on the Tizen version and it does indeed seem to unlock all of the Pro features for the included modules. Texture grouping (a pro feature) is definitely unlocked.
FWIW, the list of included modules in free Tizen Pro version are:
Windows
Windows 8 (Javascript)
Tizen (Javascript)
Windows 8 (Native)
Tizen (Native)

Modules on the Free Standard Edition:
Mac OS X
Windows
Windows 8 (Javascript)
Windows 8 (Native)

Actually, after having just purchased the upgrade I can say that if you select Help > Update License it will always say unlicensed on that page.

I've purchased the upgrade (since didn't spend as much as expected last Steam sale day).

Help > About now shows my name but the Update License shows the same thing when you go to that page.

FWIW, those on the fence due to no Steam key, upgrading on their website for $25 will get you a Steam key.
Text right on the post purchase confirmation page after spending my $25:
"Please note: Steam keys for GameMaker: Studio and export modules are allocated seven (7) days after purchase. Use the licence recovery form to retrieve all of the GameMaker licence keys associated with the email address above, including allocated Steam codes."

A quick look through shows (as expected) not much difference between the Free Tizen Pro and the regular Pro. All the same modules except I've got Tizen and MacOSX at the same time, and of course Help > About shows my real name.

Is this still going? I'm kinda confused on what to do. I started the program and chose the free version (since I had no key for the standard edition) and it said it registered a license and restarted the program. It's wanting me to give it a key to upgrade to standard but I don't see a way to get that. I assume it's over now?
