I've just read The Catcher in the Rye, it's a nice book.
I am now reading tales from Edgar Allan Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart is fascinating (and very short).

About six months ago, I started reading some Kurt Vonnegut for the first time. I'd heard about him for years, of course, but never got around to actually reading any of his work. Its quite interesting and makes for a good read. I've just started my fourth novel of his, Sirens of Titan and so far so good. I don't know that its going to get any better than Slaughterhouse Five and Cat's Cradle, though.

If anyone wants some sci-fi suggestions, I'd definitely recommend The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein and The Forever War by Joe Haldeman.

That's crazy, I just read Slaughterhouse Five and The Forever War this summer.

I first read The Forever War years ago, when I was in the military. There was a list of books approved for reading while on Duty. They all had a military/tactics theme, and most were non-fiction, but I've always gravitated towards Sci-fi, so it let me to The Forever War and Starship Troopers.

Vonnegut's probably my favorite author. And no, in my experience it does not get better than Slaughterhouse 5 and Cat's Cradle. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewatercomes damn close, though (and I quite like Galápagos, too).

That's a bit disappointing to know that I've already peaked in regards to his works. His stuff was such a hugely pleasant and subversive surprise. Its like "discovering" a band that you like and finding out that they already have five albums prior to the one you fell in love with. Its great because you instantly have a lot of content to play with, but you might have already heard their best one to date.

Do you have any suggestions for other authors in a similar vein?

While it's not quite the same style, you might try Robert Aspirin or Philip Jose Farmer. The latter, however, writes all kinds of stuff, not just satire, so you may want to pick and choose which titles to read. Then, again, you may prefer to start with Alan Dean Foster's "With Friends Like These."

My family is really into reading, and so am I.
Recently? Let's see... I'm finishing Kurt Vonnegut's Jailbird and trying to decide what will be next (I have a large collection to choose from, plus my brother's and my parents' books). I may try to read David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest, but I'm not sure. I've recently read the first volume of A Song of Ice and Fire and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
I've also read some books from writers from my country (which is Portugal) that I guess you wouldn't have heard of, like "Biografia Involuntária dos Amantes" by João Tordo....

Currently reading the Eye of Minds by James Dashner.

Recently read:
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith
The Shining by Stephen King
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
(All three last week :P)

My favorites, well that's hard to put, really. Harry Potter series goes all the way to the top along with The Hobbit and LOTR Trilogy. And then there are some Michel Crichton books I really liked, especially the Jurassic Park Duology. Apart from that, There's The Hitchhiker's Ultimate Guide to the Galaxy (5 books in one outrageous volume :D), Percy Jackson series, The Hunger Games Saga, The Maze Runner series, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Lost Symbol, etc. :P

Recently read that were amazing: Bird Box - Josh Malerman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman, The Girl With All The Gifts - M. R. Carey

(I read/listen to audio books all the time so I have a million others but these stand out the most.)

Finishing 8th book from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. I enjoyed it even more than all the books by G.R.R.Martin(read them all last year, couldn't stand the hype this tv series with Daenerys Stormporn was getting, had to check how Martin wrote it all). Besides, as every year, I'm reading Dune series. Can't get over it, I read whole series every year. And watch Lynch's movie and tv miniseries.

+1 for Malazan Book of the Fallen ;) If you like it then check Glen Cook's "The Black Company" series. Both series are often compared and both are considered to be classics of dark fantasy :>

The Malazan book of the fallen has great content but not a good style. Dune the first is great, the second trilogy is more hard SF, the prequels are uninteresting imho, stay away from the new prequels written by his son, they suck like crazy. The movie by david lynch is a masterwork.

Personally, I love books. I read a lot, although (sadly) not nearly as much as I used to.
The most recent books I've read were Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick (absolutely LOVED that book, but the protagonist really pissed me off towards the end. What a backstabbing little rat he was!) and The Zombie Survival Guide. That's a pretty neat book by the way; fun yet extremely useful to read. Never hurts to be prepared, right? :D

My all-time favourite books would be The Books of Blood and Cabal: The Nightbreed by Clive Barker and most stories and poems written by Edgar A. Poe (Masque of the Red Death, The Raven, Fall of the House of Usher, Premature Burial or Pit and the Pendulum, to name a few).
I also like various short ghost stories and urban legends.

My favorite book is Dostoievki's The Idiot(don't know if that's the official translation in English, but it's how it's translated in my native tongue). It's an absolutely amazing, magnificent and gripping tale of prejudice, social hierarchy, bigotry and how they all functioned in the horrible place that was 19th century Russia(not much different than modern day Russia, sadly). An incredible satire of an entire society, told through the means of how said society viewed people with a terribly misunderstood disease. And also, it's a much better love story than those horrible tween-shit books for retarded female teenagers that started with the abject work of the most retarded modern writer of our time, Stephanie Meyer. In other words...A MUCH BETTER LOVE STORY than fucking Twilight.

To be honest, I haven't got into modern literature too much. The problem is that english is not my mother-language. I did complete my first english book just a few months ago - ''The left hand of god''. I liked the medieval fiction.
Anyway, my favorite author is Jules Verne. I really like 20th century (he is from 19th!) steampunk style books. Not exactly the style but the definition - a prediction of future. Jules Verne did amazing on this! And only lately I have found other books I really want to read!
At the moment I am sticking with my own country's authors. Need to read them for school. Wouldn't say they are interesting but they are like treasure for my knowledge of my nation.

Um... As far as I know there is 1 book called "Shogun," James Clavell wrote it. Over 1000 pages in my book. So maybe you've a release split into two volumes. My first encounter with Shogun was not the book though. I watched and loved the TV miniseries with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. Amazing :D

Hmm, just got Collected Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges but haven't opened it yet so that doesn't count. :( The last one I actually read was The Prague Cemetery by Umberto Eco, but since I've read it before maybe that doesn't count either. :(

Hmm... the last one I hadn't read before was Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

Started reading the Borges book, spoiler: it's great! :) Glad I took a chance, if he's good enough for Umberto Eco he's good enough for me! :)

So far, most enjoyed "Pierre Menard, Author of The Quixote" and "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" - but I'm sure there's a mountain of good stuff in here...
