I know i'm new here, but i'm already not feeling good about the contributor amounts. Don't get me wrong, I think this site is amazing. But i'm kinda against putting giveaways...behind walls of money, for a lack of better words.

Like I feel that if you're on SG, giving dozens of great games away, you deserve to have a fairer chance to win a game that you really want than those that just come here for free shit with no intention besides getting free shit. But at the same time, I always see a game that i've had my eyes on for the longest, but i'm too poor to get a $300+ contributor lever/buy the game outright. So then I feel a mix of guilt for not being able to give back games to everyone here & sadness for not having a chance at any of the cool games i'd be interested in.

So then I use money that I scraped up for monthly college payments & senior year debt to try & find games that I can give away, & then instead of joy, I feel stressed because I have to figure out how to get more money without a job.

I've only been here for a few days...I feel like I shouldn't even be concerned with winning anything since my laptop can't even play most games, but I can't help it I just loves games with a passion...I dunno.

Did anyone else kinda have feelings like this when you first got started on Steam Gifts?

Looking back, I probably could have summarized this better lol

EDIT: THANKS to everyone that helped me out, i'm kinda starting to feel better about not being able to shower the world with gifts. Plus I've got a bunch of tips that I really needed. Sorry for the late replies/no replies. I'm not accustomed to forums so i'm not used to getting a bunch of comments at once, & there's a bunch of threads & now everything looks stupid :/ i'm sorry i'll do better next time

You can still win public giveaways, you just have a worse chance at winning them.
You don't HAVE to give something to win something.

Its not really that I feel I HAVE to give to other people because i'm here, I've just always had the desire to put others first despite my current situation or anything else & giving back to others. So I NEED to give to people I guess. But money issues make it hard to do...idk I just really can't explain it

Stop with the whining. People are giving stuff away for free. Let them stipulate whatever limited restrictions they want. The entitlement I see in the forums sometimes, especially from receivers who have not contributed much in the first place, is sickening.

Go on steamtrades.com and u can find civ v for 2 tf2 keys. Cus ur right, with barely any cv built up it will b hard to win it since its pretty popular. But thats how the site works. Why do you feel that you have to reach a certain CV level? What are you trying to prove, and to whom?

While Steamgifts is an awesome site, reading your posts, I'm worried it's actually causing you more distress than pleasure, and is genuinely making you feel bad about yourself.

I don't feel I have to have high CV. It just doesn't feel good trying to give your all or give all that you can, & still not be good enough for some rewards like some other more fortunate contributors

& its more or less just my desire to be able to obtain fresh games that I know people wish they could have but can't get & be able to give them the opportunity

I swear to God if I ever win the lottery, i'm gonna (save some first, i'm not THAT stupid) give out brand new Steam games to whatever person wanted them, whether they liked me or not. Cause I just hate not being able to give like I feel in my heart I want to. I care more about people i'll never even meet than I do about myself sometimes...I can't help it

Well for starters, points are free. This is a site where you have a possibility of winning a cool game. It is better to enter a giveaway (FOR FREE!) either then stressing about getting CV. It it true that some of the "very good games" are given away with a contributer level llimit, but as said, it is then a thank you giveaway to them. You do not have to ever give away anything, think about it this way: i am on a site, where i have a possibility of winning a free game. Be happy. You probably will sometimes win a game. Just ignore the contributor giveaways if they bother you. This site is about generousity, not money.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's my problem. I always feel compelled to give to EVERYONE before myself. I guess that's why I feel so shitty about it. Not because I can't win what I want (but that no doubt adds to it), but because I can't give to other people so they'll have a chance to get something too

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So you don't think that people who give away 300$ of games don't deserve something back?
I'm also a student and i also don't have a lot of mony and I think many people here have the same problem, but i don't see them nagging about it.

And there are a lot of giveaways with only a 10$ or even a 0,01$ contribution level and there are public giveaways anyway.. and join a giveaway group, then you also have a bigger chance.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't say they don't deserve it...I was looking at it from both sides. Like they deserve to have a higher chance than normal users that don't give anything. But it kinda sucks to see a chance go by, ya know?

I'm not nagging or bitching, I was just wondering if anyone else got bummed out when they first signed up & had to see everything either contributor locked or seeing giveaways with 1,000+4,000 people going for the same thing

People should be allowed the freedom to make giveaways to whomever they choose.

If that means to a particular group, so be it.

If that means to people who have contributed over $2,000 of games to the community, so be it.

Gifter's game; gifter's money; gifter's choice.

If seeing giveaways for games you can't enter makes you sad, enable Steamgifts Plus and hide all those with a contributor requirement which exceeds your CV by unticking the "Show red" radio box.

I feel contributor envy sometimes, but I don't begrudge big contributors awesome giveaways - they give a lot to the community so they deserve something nice in return.

I've installed Steamgifts+ and I filter giveaways that I can't enter, so now when I'm on my main PC I don't have to see red giveaways, just public ones or ones with a contributor value that I already meet. It stops the "envy", and it means that when I hit a milestone ($30.01, $50 and $75 for me), I get a nice surprise because I start seeing more giveaways in my list.

Most people appreciate that not everyone is in a position to give games away.

Don't feel obligated to give if you can't afford it. If Steamgifts ends up being something that causes you financial issues and/or misery, it would be better to take a break and come back when you feel you're in a place where you can enjoy it again. Either that or accept that it's ok to only give within your means, and enjoy the site without getting upset over CV limited/group/private giveaways.

1 decade ago
Permalink

That's the thing. I feel bad if I keep the money because I wouldn't be giving to others. But if I use the money to buy gifts, then I feel bad due to the fact that I might slip up & not be able to make a payment on something. I get what you're saying though, I appreciate it

As I said, if this is your mindset and Steamgifts is causing you sadness and misery because of this guilt, you'd be better off taking a break until such time as you're able to give comfortably without affecting your finances.

That's not a real scholarship.

Private colleges will charge too much and then give you a "scholarship" just by meeting the minimum entry requirements. The final tuition is typically a little more than the baseline tuition of an equivalent public institution.

It's the same as a retail store constantly running 20-30% sales. Their stuff is priced higher to include that sale "discount".

Well that $2,000 was more or less a consolation prize, seeing as how they spent most of our class' money that we saved up over our 4 years. All I got from the college was loans, but I didn't know they needed to start being payed back right after my "scholarship" ran out. & it isn't really a private school, its an art school. There are many bundle sites, humble bundle, indiegala, gala store, groupees, bundle stars, etc. where you can get many games for $0.75-5.
You can giveaway games you don't need from those bundles and you can easily reach $30 CV. Further bundled games will worth less but those will be counted only after you give away a non-bundled game.

Just contribute what you can, give away games because you want to, not to raise your CV. I am also a college student with not a lot of money, and give away what I can every once in a while, some from bundles, some not, but I don't do it b/c of CV, I do it because I want to give back to this community.

There are better ways of winning games than public giveaways anyways. I have won several "good" games here (Batman AC GOTY, Borderlands 2, Bioshock 1...) and all had a CV requirement of less than $50 and most were private (like from solving forum puzzles and stuff). I realize I am pretty lucky here, but you should try those out to up your chances (plus puzzles are just fun).

I'm not here to get my CV up, I wanna give back to people too. I always give back wherever I go. It just feels bad seeing all those high CV giveaways that arguably have the best games for the best contributors only. I really don't care about winning anything, since my laptop just barely plays McPixel at 30fps, but it just doesn't feel good knowing that you can't give people the games they really want & that you will never be able to be a top contributor because you don't have the income

I hope at least some of that made sense, I can't remember the last time I slept, I think my brain is dying

1 decade ago
Permalink

I would just remember that there is always someone that will want whatever game you give away, big or small. You do not need to give away high profile AAA games here, just giveaway what you can and people will be thankful (look at the entries for your Doom 2 giveaway), the winners of your giveaways will appreciate it. Also remember you have only been here for 5 days! You have plenty of time to get higher CV andgive away better games (like after you graduate and have a full time job), it doesn't need to happen overnight, just remember that.

I get you. I think cv is a good idea, to keep moochers away (also we are here to give away games for the joy of it), but not all people can afford CV's of that much, let alone 1000$ cv. I just don't get why anyone would put a CV limit that high. If you can afford to give away 1000$ worth of games, you should be able to afford any game you want, so it just ends up feeling kinda elitest. I'm in the same situation as OP, with business school, so the Money just isn't there atm. Lot's of great games to miss out on.
That said I have been Lucky in here and I'm not ingrateful. I try to give when I have something to give :)

That's fair enough, but a CV requirement of 100$ is achievable for most people if they buy the games on sale. but when you see a CV of more than 2-300$ it gets difficult for many. And a CV req of 1-2-3000$ is out of most peoples reach. I've seen small games or DLC's that where interesting to me. They had CV req's of more than 1000$ and some of them never got a single entry, because the contributors WHO could afford it either had it or did not want it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly! I just honestly don't understand why so many CV limits are so ridiculously up there. Its good because it can actually encourage newcomers to get active & meet people & start giving games back in return. But I just don't see a point in putting up a $15 game only for people with $300+ CV

I'm not saying that top contributors shouldn't be able to get more in return than others, because they deserve it. Without them, & developers, this place would be dead.

But if you've contributed $5,000 worth of stuff to everyone, why would you be the only one to have a REAL shot at winning what you want or entering for a game nobody else on the site can have? They could probably just buy what they wanted themselves. It just doesn't seem fair to put half of us down at the bottom (whether you contributed or not) with a 0.000000001% chance in winning

I could see a rewards system or something, or maybe a CV limit line, but not cutting off the people who try or want to be up there but can't. In my 5 days here, it just seems like that eats away at the whole "every one has a fair chance" vibe that the site has

What in the hell? 160 entries, few days,0.20~ estimated wins, already won and complaining? And if i readed right you entered(and won) for a game you can't even run?

Im in the very same situation, for over a year, 0 wins - surely it bothers me a little bit but nothing worthy making a topic to complain.

I do concur with you that more entries then id like have cv requirements skyhigh (wich is kinda funny, people with too high cv probably already bought the games they most want anyway) but you must understand that without the cv barrier theres little to no incentive for people to make that amount of giveaways. Plus nowadays (differently then when ive entered) theres so much more people and so many entries per giveaway that public no-cv giveaways have ridiculously low chances of winning.

But seriously, i cant wrap my mind around someone who just won with so little invested(time more then money i mean) crying over the foruns.

Im almost dropping of steamgifts altogether because of the time ive lost here with 0 wins and reading that just made me even more bitter to be sincere.

I'm not even really here for games. Yeah, I love games. I've been gaming since I was 3. But like I said, shitty laptop :/ so most if not damn near all of these games I can't play anyways.

That 1 win was pure luck. & the fact that it was more than one copy up there. I was just scrolling through, down & stuff cause I had a mean track record of losing at everything. But I came across Just Cause & it had 2 copies to be given away. So i'm all like "Oh...its Just Ca- waitaminute did that say TWO copies?" So I entered. & I won. I logged on the next morning & saw I actually won something & I was completely ecstatic. Until I came back down to Earth & realized there was no way in hell i'd be able to even start up that shiny new game

Which is how I wound up with that one win that everyone is giving me grief about.

I really just wanna be able to give games so people like you (with 0 wins, giving up) could have the same feeling I did that day. Like the guy I was able to give Fortix to. He had never won a game either (which just so happened to be on my first giveaway :D) & he was so happy. & it made me feel good to give him the CHANCE to win something for the first time. None of us are really guaranteed anything here (unless you're a top contributor...i'm sorry, too soon) so none of us are expected to win. Some are just luckier than others I guess

I wanna be able to be more than just taking shit for free & never giving anyone else a chance in return. The only reason I made this post was because I felt down about not being able to have money to give others games, & then turn around & see a bunch of games that I like that i'm not even qualified to be a part of because I can't give enough because I don't have enough funds. I just wanted to know if anyone else out there was in the same position I was in, felt the same way I felt. Not because I woke up this morning & felt like complaining & crying for more games. Fuck the games, i'd gladly give away the ones in my Steam account if I could, can't even play them without a real pc

Then give away a damn game. Otherwise you could opt out of joining GA's that feature games you would never play. Either way, I'm not sure how you're "giving back" by making what is essentially a very whiny and non-constructive thread.
