I've heard they are good games, but I don't have a lot of money. Now I might buy both, should I? And Oblivion Deluxe, is it worth it? Or should I save for the Christmas Sale?

This. I bought Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim last winter and it was a good deal. I haven't played Skyrim yet but Morrowind is definitely better than Oblivion.

Morrowind, followed by daggerfall are the best games in the series.

I don't know why people insist with Daggerfall - it was a good game for it's time, but it's inferior to any post Morrowind TES games in any aspects: story, gameplay, graphics, atmosphere.

If you haven't played Skyrim, you could probably play iii then 4 then 5, if you have, you could probably go back to 4 easy enough, 3 is probably a bit too dated imho.

That being said, I'm not sure how long the GOTY morrowind is but Oblivion, if you do the main quests and all the guilds and such, probably looking at 100 hours+ for the main game and the dlc.

I'd say about the same but most likely more due to elements from Oblivion not in Morrowid, like quick travel and quest marquers. I finished at around 75h in Morrowind with Main Quest, Bloodmoon and Redoran complete with some progression in Fighter and Mage Guilds I believe. Only a few side quests complete and only started Tribunal.

Play it starting from Arena, then you can get more and more angry as the games slowly turn into casual filth.

Well, 3 is maybe a bit to old if you care about graphics. Oblivion adds with shivering isles a good DLC, Knights of the nine isn's as good but still solid. And finally Horse amor,... DLCs speak for themselves. So get the GOTY. After playing Oblivion for a few hundred hours you can switch towards Skyrim then.

Without a very high end rig, the gfx mod updates available for Morrowind all set to the maximum possible will bog down any computer.
Don't play it "graphically vanilla" imo. It is an Xbox era game and looks like it without being "updated".

Depends on if you can stand hardcore games.
Skyrim is basically a casual RPG compared to Morrowind, and Oblivion is right in the center.

loads of people prefer Morrowind, for me the series only really got payable in Oblivian, and Skyrim improved on it, in general.

But, I think the entire series is worth owning for sure.

I would say Skyrim is less causal than Oblivion. It adds many mechanics that makes it a little more hard core, stuff like crafting, mob difficulty not tied to your level of experience, a little more foreign world than the classical human kingdom of Oblivion, skill tree revamp and expansion, dual wielding, puzzles. It all makes for a harder, deeper experience.

In oblivion every town, dungeon and outside area felt quite the same, every mob you encountered you knew you could take on as they leveled with you. No real challenge so pretty much streamlined.

Skyrim added good roleplay touches that Morrowind had like payed travel routes to take a little guilt off of fast travel. So in Skyrim you finally have an option to actually pay for your travel if you want to swing it that way and other small touches that made it more true to Morrowind in terms of depth and being less tailored for 12 year olds. It still is but I would say it went back to it's roots a little.

....puzzles? you think skyrim has puzzles? 0_o

maybe you forgot you're running a mod that adds some?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes it has puzzles. Look at the definition of the word. The door one for example, you have to figure out the markings and make it match the door symbols. It's easy as a toddler inserting cubes into cube shaped holes and balls into round holes but looking at lets play videos a lot of people can't even figure that one out.

Still it can be considered a puzzle, a shitty one, but still a puzzle. Something a little more engaging than lockpicking minigames.

Ye olde chart for differences, base game only, both have great mods(even perfomance/bug fixing patches etc) and more deep and cool quests than skyrim. Buy them now, so far 75% off for both games is the max steam has put unless you dont count for other sites like gmg that may sell them cheaper

Morrowind? its all laid out for you in your journal and to my recollection it is straight-forward, you just have to read rather than follow breadcrumbs and voice acting like modern games.

if your talking about the overhaul that was also pretty simple to install, basically just run the installer and -bam- done after selecting your settings.

I tried to play Morrowind, and I just couldn't play it... I actually started with Skyrim, so when I went back to play Morrowind, the combat felt slow and it was hard to use... Oblivion is better with combat, and the story was okayish, but I really like the mods for it. Like Sides Sailing Ships mods and Under the Sign of the Dragon. If you get them, get both. And if you're willing, go get Arena and Daggerfall and start at the beginning. But, those have even older combat systems than Morrowind so it might be hard. And you'll need to use DOSBox to emulate them, but I think it's worth it.

daggerfall's combat seemed easy enough...edit-.well I remapped the controls a bit first lol. I had forgotten I did that since the default is so stupid

It's a large visual/gameplay update to the game: "Bringing Morrowind towards modernity: Distant views, dynamic shadows, high quality shaders and small UI improvements." It makes the game better to play (but doesnt break it in any way) and look pretty damn good for a game so old.

The set up might take a little time, but its near completely self-installing with only a few prompts to let you customize your settings. Which is pretty great, means you dont have to deal with a ton of mods all at once. Its totally worth it.

Good luck OP! Start with Morrowind, cause Oblivion and Skyrim will ruin you with the more modern gameplay. Morrowind has the best story though, most people agree.

edit: if you don't like to read you might be in trouble with Morrowind.
edi2: turn that difficulty super low at first in Morrowind, otherwise you'll give up after you miss every single swing and die repeatedly

Comment has been collapsed.

For most people it depends on what you started on. I can guarantee you that almost all gamers that started on Skyrim will think that Morrowind and Oblivion are complete pieces of shit.

I started on Oblivion and absolutely loved it, hated Skyrim, liked Morrowind but it lagged really bad and was really too difficult for me.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

By "lagged" I assume you mean was slow story-wise and not slow on your computer, because something is wrong if you can run Skyrim and not Morrowind :P

But yeah, everyone's opinion differs on these, but in general in terms of story Morrowind is usually the winner. I had the problem of it being too difficult for me too (the battle system is different from Obliv/Skyrim and runs on an evil RNG) until I learned that in the beginning of the game you turn that difficulty slider waaaaaaay down until you level up some. You might need to read some things online about starting in Morrowind, it'll really help and make some of its janky-ness easier to take.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I actually meant lagging, because I was once a console gamer and played Oblivion and Skyrim on Xbox. I have since abandoned consoles for the master race, and purchased Oblivion (accidentally bought GOTY instead of Deluxe >_<) and Morrowind in the winter sale. I also installed the Morrowind overhaul that made the graphics quite nice. I'm probably going to try it again someday, maybe when I have a smaller backlog and a larger hard drive.

Bought Morrowind during the summer sale and my first Elder Scrolls was Oblivion, I love them both but I can see why some people prefer Morrowind. But I say get them before the sale is gone, I got Morrowind for $12 during the summer sale, it's $5 now... Do it before it's too late!
EDIT I see you bought it, good choice!

I got the Elder Scrolls Complete on Steam on sale for only $60, which included Morrowwind + all dlc, Oblivion + all dlc, and Skyrim + the first dlc. Pretty Good deal if you ask me.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thats not a good deal. TES 3 + 4 costs $11.25 (this has been the price for over a year or two afaik), Skyrim Complete is $36 right now, that makes $47.25 for all TES games right now. And not only that, Skyrim was once sold for $6 (back in early spring), the DLC has been around $22.25 quite a while as well (although it did go down to 64% off at one point), meaning Skyrim complete was once sold for less than $28.25, or rather, less than $39.25 for all the games.

So I'd rather not ask you.

They are all good.. but I would almost want to say.. if you are willing to wait. There might be a better deal for Skyrim at least during the Winter sales.

While I do feel at the current price it is worth it. I would still recommend that if you are willing to wait and get it later, you will probably get it for cheaper during the winter sales like I said.

They are both better theb Skyrim so yes buy it! Also for Morrowind if you cant stand the graphics. There is a mod that upgrades the graphics alot.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They are all good -
Morrowind is the cheapest and has a better story* overall, but the battle system is bad and so are the graphics.
Oblivion has a better battle system, much better graphics, and the story is good overall.
Skyrim has awesome graphics, a good story overall, but lame battle system for it's time - I was expecting at least a battle system as good as in Dark Messiah of M&M.

I think you should play all of them - at least for the story. And I know a lot of people with hundreds of playtime on TES games (as recorded on xfire), but I never heard one of them saying that Skyrim is bad. :)

*compared with the other TES games.
