They did a little bit more damage with last update by increasing both the Platinum prices(hard currency you buy with $$$) and in-game Skin/Taunt prices(so double increase with at least 50-75% overall) without even mentioning it in the patch notes.
Its like they were thinking "How to insult both new and old players at once?"

I don't think it had much to do with marketing. Gearbox was just trying to jump on a bandwagon that has departed years ago. (Mobas)
Beside the brilliant idea to release the game at the same time as Overwatch :D

Not so sure about that ... Overwatch which had pretty similar concept was super popular .
Paladins , which lunched as f2p game and had massive marketing behind it was also a great success .
Meanwhile battleborn , which was arguably a better game then Paladins atleast ( imo even better then overwatch but thats just me ) was a complete failure ... had to cut the 60$ price tag almost right after release , got bundled couple months later and its not a f2p with less then 1k playerbase :|

I have to admit I'm mostly basing this on my own position but I always assumed the people who are interested in mobas have already picked their favourites years ago and a vast majority of gamers are not willing to try the genre.
After Borderlands 2 I personally just wanted more of the same from Gearbox and not some competetive MP thingy.

Oh dont get me wrong , the shit im saying is mostly personal opinion ... tho the lack of marketing part is actually backed up by some serious discussion couple podcasts i tend to listen to had about the matter .
They ware comparing the global public marketing stats between Overwatch Battleborn and Paladins .
It was a sad graph tbh ... Whenever a news about Battleborn came out , Blizzard cuckblocked them .
And if A Battleborn Video / trailer ... smthng got maybe 200-300k hits ... Anything overwatch related was getting 5 mil + .
It was both a horrible minimalistic marketing , completed with terrible timing that sadly killed the game .
Paladins on the other hand , was indirectly marketing itself as the f2p overwatch ( which it kinda is ) and people quickly jumped on the bandwagon .
At the end of the day battleborn was still trying to survive somehow , by cutting the price tag in half from what it was originally , and eventually going f2p , but it was way to late .
IF paladins didnt exist , i do believe it would be a completely different story ... but that again is just personal opinion :P

By the way is there a reason you didn't mention Paragon ? Is it just a bad Moba ?
Just curious because it's the only one of those new mobas I tried, thinking 3rd person moba would also mean decent gunplay, but I was scared off by how atrociously terrible the gunplay is.

The game is a failure. I think even if it went totally free it wouldn't make a difference. It's not going to bring the players back. It's poorly optimized for many people regardless of which gpu you have. Single player is boring and not why people wanted this game. Co-op mode which should be fun but isn't really, is way less satisfying than Borderlands 2 co-op.
Vs. mode is a mess due to the (generic-looking imo) graphics. It's hard to tell what's going on whenever there's a bunch of characters and npcs all on the screen because many of the characters don't look very distinct and their colors tend to blend in with everything else. Most of them have dull and uninteresting abilities.
It looks and plays like a cheap rip-off of Borderlands. Wouldn't have mattered if Overwatch or Paladins didn't exist. This game feels uninspired and lazily made.
