Hello. In the last winter sale i bought Half Life 2 (ep. 1 and 2 too). Im playing through HL2 right now and i like it a lot, but i dont understand the story at all, and i would love to play the first half life to know a bit more about Freeman and the HL Universe.

The question is, do i have to own Half life (1) or Half life source to install the mod? I know that the black mesa web page says about it (0mfg kNt U rEaD noOb?) but this is not my language and i cannot understand what i need in order to play it.

Thanks a lot for your time guys ^_^

Nope. I do recommend playing original HL first though, partly because Black Mesa lacks Xen.

If you have HL2, you can install BM Source (if you are talking about this mod), but I would prefer to play original game first before playing the mod. Also Opposing Force and Blue Shift will tell you more about the story.

although they do claim they are working on more chapters and will release them once they feel ready

You just need the 2007 Source SDK, which is included in HL2:Ep2. But just in case, I'd download it via steam all the same. From your library, click the dropdown menu next to the search bar, click "Tools," and download "Source SDK Base 2007."

You'll miss the last chapter of HL if you just get Black Mesa. HL:S is just the original HL with ragdoll physics and transparent water. There's no real difference. If you have $2.50, or whatever it is in your region, get the original HL. It's still a good game, plus it's on sale now.

Keep in mind that even after playing HL, opposing forces and blue shift there will be huge holes in the plot that you need to fill with imagination, faith and a few google searches.

The story from HL1 to HL2 made a BIG leap in complexity without really stopping to explain much in the game itself, a few of those leaps get explained during the game, others in the episodes, but others remain speculation to this day(as far as I know). Valve isn't one to let continuity get in the way of making a game (what they consider) more interesting and fun.
