So, personally, I kinda love mobas' genre, but I always fount it hard to play them cause LoL got the "monopolius" (don't know if it's the correct word) on this specific genre. So, I kinda reduced to only play LoL in my game-times, wich I personally found amazin', but, after playing it that much (I mean, I play it since more than one, maybe two years) it starts getting boring. So I was wondering if there was any other moba with an active community to "alternate" with, and the only answer that I could personally found was Dota 2, and I'm here to ask "confirmation" for this.
I was also wandering if Dota 2 got some "shorter time" game-mode like LoL has (ARAM, 3v3, Dominion) cause I currently don't like to waste much time playing.

Sure. I hope you'll like custom games that have user created content because that's gonna be the next thing in Dota 2

http://d2modd.in/lobbies Theres plenty of mods to try at the moment and it keeps growing. Theres some official ones that are shorter as well like 1v1, Ability Draft (not that much shorter)

Dota 2's community is extremely active and engaging. You might also want to try Smite. Smite is a third-person MOBA that's really fun and the community is also really active.

DotA 2 doesn't have a "short mode" and we certainly don't need more LoL players in DotA.I swear if I ever come across another human being, calling my Shadow Fiend "your champion" I'll buy him RP's to send him back to LoL.

Well enough jokes, DotA is A LOT harder than LoL and you have to be really active in game.It makes you get tired a lot faster, especially if you're on mid lane.If you ever start playing DotA, you better say goodbye to your social life.

Well yeah, it probably is. But I don't like playing much competitively, so I don't think that will be a real problem

Not playing competitively is a problem, if you play DotA you have to do everything you can do to win.Otherwise you'll get reported and probably banned for "feeding on purpose".

Um... what. You can't get banned, at least if you don't suck or ruin games on purpose. Just play a few bot games to practice and you're all good to go.

We currently don't have a mode I'd call shorter... but we have some different game modes.

Thing is, just recently Valve released the tools for making custom game modes for Dota. It's still an alpha but a lot of stuff is being made already and the community is really excited. We're getting a big update in a couple of weeks, which may make the custom game modes more accessible... But maybe not... And it will take a bit more time for them to be released.

Custom game modes won't be just stuff like ARAM, an alternative map/mode for Dota. We can make pretty much anything... Even if you don't like Dota it won't imply that you won't enjoy the custom maps.

So far I've played:

  • Pudge wars - kinda like Blitzcrank 5 v 5 in a custom map with powerups, new abilities...
  • Warlock - A small arena with 10 heroes which try to push each other into the lava around the arena.
  • Dota Dash - Some sort of Mario Kart.
  • Run Kitty Run - You try to make your way through a long path full of wolves which move randomly and stun you if they touch you. Other players can save you and it's like a team based race.

Most of the stuff being done are just ports of Warcraft 3 custom maps, like tower defense modes, rpg games, etc.

So yeah, install the game, see if you like it, if not... just wait for custom stuff to come out. It's free!

It just finished a tournament with a ten-million-dollar prize pool. What do you think? :D Haha

This doesn't mean mich for me. As I said, I come from LOL community and big-prized tournaments are nothing extraordinary for me, also considering that the size of the prize doesn't mean that the community is active, it just means that the owners got a lot of money to sponorize themselves.

The pool prize is done by users that buy the compendium

9.4 million of that is just 25% of what the community paid on JUST compendiums and compendium points.

Yes. I do. As I said (twice) I come from LOL community, and Dota 2's twitch number are not even comparable to Lol's. That's why I was asking.

Dota 2 is active and toxic. There's bloody insults every match if you're retarded and/or noob. Be prepared to be attacked with sarcasm, profanity and racist remarks.

And I'm not even kidding.

Well, now that I've tried both, I definitely agree. Or, at least, it is if you play games to have FUN, as normal people do. If you do just to find the harder game and demonstrate you have a bigger e-penis, like nerds do, you probably will find Dota 2 much better. It's still fun enough to be played though, less than lol for me but still fun.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did the exact opposite. Played league for a while then played dota and said "Wow this is way more fun." I don't know. The main thing I hear is that the dota community sucks but I played league pretty recently and the community was so toxic it gave me cancer.
EDIT: Also dota doesn't seem much harder. You just have to get used to it.

Yup, there are custom gamemodes and there's was actually released the Dota 2 Workshop Tools alpha, so you can make your own maps and mods. :P Plus, there's always volvo's own 1v1 practise mode. The match usually takes like 5 minutes, but I myself have played a 37 min match.

I friggin' love when people argue about LoL vs Dota2, let me tell you all a story then.

I have a roommate, his opinion about MOBA genre: "MOBA a shit". Every time I ran Dota he send me his opinion and usually I can't even argue, so I guess I should've played Borderlands :P (or any other game)

If it still doesn't convince you, the Dota can be both joyful and suffocating at the same time, there are games that even if you loose you cant think another thing that it was a good game and I would've liked more. But more likely it will be one sided depending on how well your team does and if through the whole game you wont get cocky bastards running around alone because they were a little bit fed in the beginning and start throwing the game -.- (or bunch of idiots that don't know what they're doing and start flaming at everybody else)
