My situation is that I've had almost no sleep the previous night and I have to stay up to write a history essay. I feel awake but I also feel sucked of life. I have no will to write and I can't think straight. Tips?

Coffee doesn't have sugar unless you add it, which you should never do. GROSS
As for a caffeine crash, well, you only need worry about that if you stop drinking the coffee ;)

Similar things to when you are feling ill and have no energy. Lots of water, chicken soup, regular 20 minutes naps (one every two hours maybe) - more to rest your eyes. Avoid tea/coffeee/sugar

Coffee, lots of coffee. Drink coffee until you can see the sounds.

Just take a powernap.
or
Go for a walk. Fresh air helps a lot. Clears your mind. And then refocus on your essay

No coffee or sugar, because it gives you a boost for a few minutes, but afterwards you will be more tired.
Drink water instead. Not drinking enough can leads to headaches, etc.
And eat a good meal.

Do you enjoy history? What is the historical subject?

I enjoy it somewhat. The course is AP US History and the essay was on the US's extent of neutrality during WWI.

Lots of water and fresh air - it sucks major buttocks to stay up without sleeping (If you can, don't do that again because your performance drops a lot) but generally dehydration and stale/hot air can make one sleepier. Lack of water in particular can cause headache, tiredness, bad mood and generally make you miserable. Fresh, colder air always wakes me up And a powernap also can help, a little sleep is miles better than no sleep. Use coffee if you can, rather than energy drinks.
Oh and as verveeri said, eat something, preferably little carbohydrates and fats, and more on the fiber-protein line. Eat a few eggs, usually households have it, cheap, filling and helps a lot :) These foodsprovide energy on a longer term, and will make you feel not-hungry, but not full. Carbohydrates (pastry, bread, sweet things) will fill you up fast, feel sleepy, sugar high keeping you up while sleepy=useless , then crash + you'll be hungry soon again and you're in better position that you were.

Thanks for this. For some reason I have an ability to stay up a long time before feeling tired (once i stayed up for two days straight). I did eat a lot of sugar yesterday and felt terrible probably because of it. Drinking water helped a lot :D

Do some sports. Free your endorphins, Its natural caffeine.

Don't go to bed so late next time.

I don't drink a coffee, but some people drink coffee then take a 1 hour nap. Caffeine automatically wakes you up, but I think it might last for a while and then you get more tired and sleepy.

If you set up an alarm clock to wake you up, Wake up.
Don't wack it and go back to sleep.

I see but why is that?

Permalink

It interrupts the body hormone/function. Because its so temping to hit the snooze button and go back to sleep, you could wake up late and have lots of unfinish work/business thus increasing stress. It also delays many of your actions and get sleeping disorder. Its a trouble cycle when you are planning to actually get something done and it can become a bad habit especially being lazy. It also makes you unenergetic, unhealthy, etc

This poll is one of the worst I've ever seen, just saying. :P To stay energized, most people use caffeine. You can also put a steady supply of ice cubes in your underwear. xD The easiest way to stay energized is to do something you're interested in doing. ;P

Coffee, and LOTS of coffee. Or Coke/Pepsi/other caffeinated drinks.
Good luck on your essay! By the way, what part of history are you studying? o:

I'm still in high school, the course is AP US History and the subject matter was the US's extent of neutrality during WWI. Not too crazy about history myself which is why I kept putting it off.

Ehh, as you get older, you'll probably learn to like history more - when I was in high school, I hated history. Before getting into college, I was excited to find a neat history course to take!
But I hear you there, WWI isn't all that interesting to study, especially compared to WWII. I know little about WWI, otherwise I'd be able to give you a little info to help out q:

Not that I particularly hate history, but I just hate having to know all the specifics (especially about politics) and the way my teacher grades is just way too harsh without telling us what we need to improve on. Also, I don't write well in the first place and there's a lot of that in the AP class :P.

Yeah, some teachers can be very strict about grading, and not explain how they grade. What exactly do you have a hard time with writing? Is it the formatting in essays, or do you just have a hard time coming up with the words? o:

I have a hard time coming up with words I guess. I'm a wee bit of a perfectionist when it comes to school work so I tend not to just immediately start typing or else I'd just spew garbage. I try to think for a while (and procrastinate for a while) until a decent thought comes to mind. Also I don't think I've ever written more than 1500 words (in one document). Sometimes I feel like I've said all I needed to or that I'm able to. As a result of this latter weakness of mine, I'd get poor grades on important end-of-semester research papers where I needed to write say 1200, and can only get 800.

Word limits can be a challenge, that's why it's good to add words to sentences, and use synonyms and adjectives. Example: "WWI was a brutal time for the world, and it affected many people." Maybe change that to "WWI was an extremely brutal time, and most of the world was greatly affected by this tragic war."
Poor example, but you get the point. I've managed to stretch essays from say 800 words to around 900 by doing that alone. Then when I'm done stretching it out, I usually think of a sentence or two that I didn't think of before.

If you're in college try to find the dude that sells his Adderall. There's usually like 8 people on campus who do, just try to fall asleep/lose focus then. ;)

Ambidot and Adam1224 have the right idea. Drink lots of water, get up and walk around, regularly (every 30 mins?), and get some fresh air every hour or so. Stimulants will just cause you to burn through your "energy battery" more quickly and without focus. (Your stomach doesn't need more energy, your brain does.)

To keep your blood sugar up when your brain feels sluggish, drink fruit juice in small doses (think "mini-shots") for a burst, or nibble on granola (carbs) for extended energy.

Avoid processed sugar.

Write your essay on the night before deadline day or Make a schedule of your sleep time so you can get enough of rest and drink plenty of water.

I did indeed write it the night before the deadline (as always :D), and I'd sadly never be able to follow any kind of schedule because I procrastinate too much. However drinking some water to get me hydrated did help me feel a lot better yesterday (I seldom drink water).

  • Meditation
  • Conscious breathing
  • Early morning stretches and/or asanas
  • Plant-based diet, focusing on watery fruits if you don't drink much water
  • Take breaks from time to time and allow yourself to relax so your brain can rest from the task given (as some people said, going for a walk it's indeed a great idea)
