...and I've never had one before. Whats the best way to deal with these? I reported them on steam and left a warning on my trade page but I woke up to find -rep on my profile. Is there any way to contact support to get those removed? What other precautionary steps should I take?

You can delete profile comments yourself. No need to ask someone else to do it for you. And reporting the person is really all you can do.

He's talking about the -rep on SG which you can't obviously remove yourself.

Oh, yeah... I was stupid and assumed that he was talking about his Steam profile. Sorry about that.

I actually got one of those emails a little while ago. Hilarious! Didn't know they still existed.

It costs next to nothing to send those emails out, so it doesn't take a lot of fools for it to be profitable.

It's fun to watch them evolve, from nigeria, to iraq, to syria

Add text to your profile picture to say you have an impersonator and resync. Contact the person who gave you the negative rep and ask them to remove it after explaining.

I left a giant message on my trade page and even changed my profile pic to see if it will help. But idk for how long. As for contacting them none allow comment on their profile except one, so I left them -rep in hopes they will read the message. I doubt they would add me on steam now after getting scammed by the faker.

Add text to the pic. Also remove the negative rep you gave to the people who fell for the scam or you will be banned for misuse of trade feedback.

I added text to this new pic to warn people. Should I use it now? Or wait until the impersonator tries to use this one. Cuz for now they sill have my old profile pic.

Sync your one with warning text.

Potential victims won't look for your trade page. They will just visit your sg profile. Editing the avatar is the best thing.

What makes you think adding "I have an impersonator" helps? Clearly people can't be bothered to check people's profiles when the dude impersonating OP doesn't have the same profile layout anyways. The only warning this gives to people are users who already know to verify profile.

They are only checking the SG profile, not clicking back to the Steam profile via SG like they should. Having a pic with text on SG about an impersonator is quite likely to be seen.

Most people don't know to check those things or are really too stupid too. If they knew to check OP's page they would see the difference in the scammer's profile whether or not he warned people. Different levels, layout, games, badges.

I'm trying to report them on there too but it says I need a chat screenshot. I don't see why in this case. Would simply using a screenshot of his profile work?

It is sad and also somewhat funny how many rookie traders fall so easily to the "I post MY SteamTrades profile in chat and it is totally mine because the names are the same, see" scam.

Report the copycat on SteamRep as suggested by a previous comment;
help spreading word about the Enhanced Steam browser extension, as it adds a wealth of useful data to Steam profiles, including an eye-catching red warning on those confirmed as scammers by SteamRep and their partners

How can i report them on steam rep? It says I need a pic of the trade chat window when I try to report them for rep fraud. Would just a profile pic work?

You could try asking a certain three people for that kind of proof, but I'm not sure if they'll be willing to help.
Just ask them nicely, if you do.

If you don't know what to look for in a trade, then that can happen to them. It's bad for them, but you can't change that. If i wouldn't have been quite some time before my first trade, who knows if i would have fallen for something like that, too :)

You should add text dirctly to your avatar warning them about the scammer and to double check if it's you, only thing you can do about it. These kind of a*seholes come too fast to save the first newbie victims, but at least that could save some of the later ones.

I got one guy asking for proof now. Is there any way I can show him I don't have multiple accounts?

Probably not. You still need to sync with SG https://www.steamgifts.com/account/profile/sync

Also, link the last two people to this thread. They might learn something.

I managed to prove it to him using a screenshot of an order receipt and he's helping me clear my name now. Hopefully the other two will notice as well. I added text like you said. I wish steam would just ban these people. Steamrep says hes even scammed before.

I don't think there is proof that you don't have multiple accounts, but at least he could now see if he's trading with you or not.

If Valve actually machine banned all these impersonators/scammers from community access, which they could very easily do, then the problem would come to a screeching halt very quickly. But then that might shrink their user base & profit margins, so nothing gets done.

Unfortunately there is no real way to help this, as people will always fall for "anything" ... got negative feedback 1 time myself like that, remaining calm and friendly while explaining the victim that it wasn't you, to get your feedback undone, is probably the best course of action. Reporting the scammer on steam if you're able to find him is arduous and leads usually to nothing unless its been done by a 100 or whatever number required by steam, for them to take action.

Thats really sad. You'd think with how much money valve make that they'd have more support staff to fix things like this.

Best way is to have a custom URL link to your Steam profile. For instance, mine ends as /steamyprofile/. Also, buy a rare wallpaper or advertise specific hours played for your games. Finally, mention your list of past Steam usernames. The scammer will never have an exact copy of usernames like yours.

Report the impersonator and block whole communication with him. To prevent troll attempts change visibility of your all content (screenshots, reviews etc.) for friends only. Be aware also that you unsubscirbed from disccusions threads, because of
bug attached below which occured to me everyday for past 6 months.

If he invites you to the group from alt account to send the message, just decline the invite and block that account too. Also it might be helpful to block all his friends, just because some of them might be his other alt accounts, which he used as mule accounts - where he store/farm cards/trade items further.

Also notifying the community might be useful by pasting his steamid on your profile and no I don't write about custom url, but steamid. If suspect changes the url and you click the link, you will get an error.

Hope it helps.
