It's no surprise we're behind on tickets, but we're quickly catching up with the help of some new moderators and tools at their disposal. This one is no exception. First off, if you have a ticket in support for a reroll request, it's been automatically closed, with a link to this thread. We're moving all requests for a new winner into an updated system with a handful of improvements to speed things up.

How do I request a new winner?

Head over to the View Created page, and open up the winner for one of your giveaways. You'll see a button next to their name saying Request New Winner. Clicking this button will forward you over to a form, where you can select a reason, and provide additional notes.

Available reasons

  1. Did Not Meet Requirements (Private/Group Only)
  2. Did Not Own Base Game for DLC
  3. Leaked Giveaway (Private Only)
  4. Majority of Bundle Exists in Their Account
  5. No Longer a Group Member (Group Only)
  6. Other
  7. Previously Won the Game, or Already on Account
  8. Regifted or Did Not Activate Previous Wins This Month
  9. Suspended or Inappropriate Behavior
  10. Unable to Contact Through Steam or E-mail
  11. Winner Rejected Gift

What happens next?

Once you submit a request, a support ticket is automatically created with the appropriate information for moderators to review. Any additional notes you provided are added as the first comment. If at any time you want to cancel the request, you can close the support ticket, or cancel from the View Created page.

Moderators have the ability to deny or approve requests with the push of a button. An automated message will appear on your ticket based on the moderator's selection. If it's denied, and you feel you left out important information, you can always submit a request again.

Security

Requests for a new winner must go through this process. Winners are locked, and cannot be rerolled by a moderator until a request is submitted. As we grow our team of moderators in the future, this ensures everything is logged, and giveaways cannot be rerolled without the permission of the creator.

Moderators cannot reroll their own giveaways, they need to be approved by another moderator going through the above process. Similiar to the previous point, this will allow us to safely expand our moderator team.

I admit I haven't seen this thread earlier but the discoverability of the feature is really good (as long as you already know how to view the winner ;) ). Unfortunately I had to make a use of this feature, but it worked very nice! Good to see this streamlined so the link is right there by the winner and you don't have to put the link etc. Great addition!

"8. Regifted or Did Not Activate Previous Wins This Month"

Why is this limited to only this month and not a user's entire time on SG? One group I'm in has a person who never redeemed a lot of the games he won, but those were prior to this month. (Yes, I reported the user.)

And when will SG automatically check to see if winners redeem the games they win via account resync and lock them out if they don't? That should have been done from the very beginning.

Because there are some games that have activated strangely in the past. For example, check my wins. Note Ecco the Dolphin

That's not the title it activated as on my account. When I check the games listed in my sync account page, it shows up as "Sega Classics". When I go to Steam, it's listed as "SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics".

If it was for all time, I'd be unable to win another game because the giveaway creator could always look at my account, notice the lack of Ecco the Dolphin, then ask for a reroll

The giveaway creator in your case was generous and gave you a bunch of games instead of just one, and without an explanation to future giveaway creators it could look suspicious. Okay, so suppose that Ecco giveaway had occurred within the last month and you won another giveaway today. Like you said, without an explanation you'd be unable to win that giveaway.

Your example would be more relevant for the people in this thread who are concerned about reroll requests being made for petty reasons or lack of sufficient evidence, and how to appeal those requests. For what it's worth, I agree with those concerns, and I do hope that doesn't screw you over in any future giveaways you win.

However, my question is why people who broke the site rules get a free pass so long as they didn't break the rules in the past month, which is what point #8 is kind of implying the way it is currently worded.

He likely only got the one. I once activated Streets of Rage 2 on my account. Like him I have it showing as "SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics" under my steam library. When I choose the option to view DLC I see just Streets of Rage 2 (not the whole collection).

You are correct, and you also beat me to it.

Actually, that's now how it is at all. The sega classics work peculiarly like that, and the only way I can think about it working, is that the actual "game" in the scenario, for technical reasons only, is Sega Classics, while Ecco the Dolphin, and such other games, are merely DLC for that. Yet in this case, each DLC includes "Sega Classics" which could be considered the basegame, despite it not being the game.

Trust me, it's a weird as fuck system, but I can vouch for it working like this as I have Golden Axe 1 and 2, they are only visible as DLC in the "sega classics" part of the library, and it's only those 2 games which I am able to play.

Who said they would get free pass ?
All this means is that after a month the SteamGifts can't keep punishing them. The moderators are still free to take action.

Leaving an infinite duration does a two things:

  • It means people like me will keep being punished for the screwed up system of sega classic games we won. That is, people being punished for winning a giveaway where the developers screwed up.
  • If someone does something bad enough to earn a permanent punishment, then they should be permanently banned. For anything less than something that earns a permanent ban, any punishment should be temporary. Removing the time limit for 8 allows a permanent punishment, in that the person could be denied any wins they receive.

Also, why should the SteamGifts moderators endorse any vigilante action from the community ?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Okay, that makes sense that there's nothing stopping us from still reporting someone whom we feel abused previous wins. I definitely understand now how your permanent punishment example is relevant. Thank you for explaining, I think that takes care of my concern regarding #8.

Maybe I'm just tired, but where was vigilante action mentioned? I'm certainly not in favor of that.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, the punishment thing is why. I was a strong supporter of making it two months, just for clarity's sake, but I was outvoted. Basically, we don't want to punish a user a year later for something they did back when they were a stupid n00b. Sure, if they were never suspended for it, we'll suspend them when we do find them, but we won't reroll.

By vigilante action, I'm talking about any time when the general population takes it on themselves to punish someone for a perceived wrong.
In this case, anyone asking for a reroll because the winner broke SteamGifts rules comes close to vigilante action. Not completely, as the moderators still need to approve it, but it's still too close for my liking because the giveaway creator is the one who decides if punishment should be asked for, despite having no part in the original infraction.

No because i just did it he mark received but did not want the game since already owned it and sayed can re-roll. Also the moderators have to approve each one anyway.

Still not a valid reroll reason unless there is prior permission granted, in which case it comes under Did Not Meet Requirements.

This is a great addition, I had a ticket in for 3 weeks waiting for a reroll, then when this was added, support helped me out with 3 rerolls all in 1 day! Finally I found a winner who had the base game for my DLC :) Thanks also to Jade & Crossbourne for helping me out with the rerolls!

If you have a green banner saying: "Congratulations, you're the winner of a giveaway! Watch your e-mail, and let us know when you receive the gift by clicking here.", simply click the clicking here link, which will take you to here. This page can also be found at any time by clicking "Giveaways" then "View won" at the top of your screen. You will only get an email if the gifter sends the game/key via email, and you will only get a message on steam if the gifter adds you directly. Hope this helps.

Seeing as there is option 6. Other, I expect there will be people trying to get rerolls for all sorts of reasons that the moderators find unacceptable. Could we get the moderators putting these unacceptable reasons into a thread so everyone can see the kind of reroll requests that are unacceptable.

They should be fairly entertaining, and it might even cause some people to not ask for a reroll when they see that their intended reason is in the unacceptable reasons thread.

I would suggest adding a "Request New Winner" button for the winner either.
That might futher speed up reroll, if the wrong winner cooperates. Because that might not need moderator's review.
The only security problem to consider is, reroll must happen automatically, only if the gifter haven't seen winner's email address. In that case, he haven't send the gift for sure. Once, the gifter accessed the winer's address, it must not be rerolled automatically. It should be approved by the gifter. If the gifter didn't check it properly and sent a gift to the winner, but winner shouldn't recieve it and cooperates, he informs the gifter, he is not using that gift and suggests a reroll. Gifter resends his gift to his own address prior to approving the reroll (so the previous winner could not activate it anymore), than aproves it and gets a new winner without bothering a moderator.

Two questions:

1 - If you win a giveaway, then the giveaway gets rerolled, do you get your points for entering back ?

2 - If someone asks for a reroll, gets it, but then doesn't give the game do they get punished more than if they didn't ask for a reroll before failing to give the game ?
What about people who ask for a reroll, but don't get it ?

I'm thinking they should as asking for a reroll, then not giving it away, makes them more likely to be someone who has the game to giveaway but doesn't like the winner.

1 decade ago

  1. No.
  2. There's no official rule, but I'd suspend extra for wasting our time at least.

Just requested reroll, because of unable to contact the winner for 3 days now. Support told me that I need to wait 7 days, it's ok. But I was a little confused with the line "you can then request for a new winner by providing proof that you attempted to contact them". No problem too, but I think the winner must make first steps in receiving a gift and providing proof in case when contributor is ignoring him.
sorry for my englichie, but I think you get the point

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A lot of people get annoyed when the winner takes the first step, say, by adding the contributor on Steam - it's like saying "OMG I WON GIMME GIFT PLS", whereas waiting for the contributor to add them isn't frowned upon.

Regarding your confusion: Yeah, that could be a bit confusing, but as you now know, generally, the 7 days wait rule supersedes the re-roll request (regarding unable to contact the winner).
