I saw IGN post this video today and didn't see anyone else relaying the news here.

What do you guys think of Nintendo doing this?

EDIT: I forgot to say what I thought -_- Anyways, I think this is a good idea on Nintendo's part because they are trying to push towards younger gamers and gain new consumers. Also, I think the new design is perfect for younger kids.

I don't like having two screens facing outwards at all times.

I don't personally mind it, though I'll stick with my present 3DS anyway

Same here. I got mine launch week so I have those games they gave away to early buyers when they dropped the price.

they need money D:

Is simple logic, if you realese a 3d console with 2 screens, the logic step is release a 2d console with 2 screens...

Simple!

They already have. It's called Nintendo DS.

Well I think the point behind this is it can play 3DS games but only in 2D. With a regular DS (or DSi, etc.) you don't have the ability to play 3DS games like Mario Kart7, Animal Crossing: NL, etc.

It's more of a cheaper version of the console that can still play the 3DS games.

Sounds nice enough. Are there any good games for the 3DS?

There are some pretty good games out there if you find a niche.

Definitely. Fire Emblem: Awakening, Devil Survivor: Overclocked, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and some other stuff that doesn't come to mind at the moment

Also Dead or Alive Dimensions and if you didn't play Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater (despite framrate drops, that game is amazing to play on 3DS with useful second screen)

I don't really mind the idea except for... being completely flat. That doesn't help at all the design.

It's just... NGGH!

People dont seem to understand that the 2DS is meant for 5,6 year old kids! It's cheaper you can't snap them in half and are not exposed to they eye strain that the 3D effect has!

It's so cheap! I regret buying my 3DS XL now because I don't need the 3D feature at all.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Didn't you buy it for a bigger screen?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It would have been better for me to save a significant amount money and use a smaller 2D screen. The regular 3DS and XL weren't too different pricewise.

"significant amount money" 30$?

You save $70 when choosing the 2DS over the 3DS XL at regular price. :3

Having a 3DS without the 3D is a good idea because the 3D is garbage and removing it would cut costs. But it should have been an exact copy of the 3DS in terms of everything else. Why they got rid of the clamshell design is beyond me. It looks like an ugly, cheap, brick of a mess.

I actually want one of these, only downside is that it lacks the ability to close and that the bottom screen appears to be smaller.

If you have a bag to put it in it shouldn't be much of a problem, but, yeah... the new design could have been way better.

The screen is exactly the same size as the original 3DS

I like it a lot, not looks wise, it looks a bit odd but nothing I can't get used to, but I never had any interest in the 3D option anyway, so at a cheaper price, this is perfect, might get this and hold off on getting the PS4 for a while

I think its a great idea for kids under 6. My younger cousin already broke two normal DS's, making it totally flat would get rid of that headache

Good idea overall. It's cheaper, healthier (less eye strain do to lack of 3D) and more durable (less moving parts). I would buy one because of the $50 savings. I do question how portable the 2DS will be compared to the 3DS. It's in essence the reverse of what Nintendo did with the Gameboy Advance, going from flat to the hinged SP. Later it went back to flat with the Micro.

It's a good idea for getting the 3DS more popular with really little kids.

I would get it because it's cheaper, but it's only 30 bucks cheaper then the 3ds and is huge and awkward without being the xl size.

This cheaper models are always welcome, for people not interested in the 3D function is a great choice. Also for young kids, my cousin broke his Ds and Ds Lite.

People were asking for a 3DS without the 3D screen, and this is pretty much that. It's cheaper too!

Why they decided to drop the clamshell design (and stereo speakers) though is beyond me.

1 decade ago
Permalink

So younger kids cant snap it in two, like the clamshell.

1 decade ago

I think its a perfectly reasonable and good idea. I know a couple of people who want only a couple games on the 3DS (Animal Crossing:NL, Mario Kart 7) but have no want of other games so the lower price point seems good for that. Also it is nice that Nintendo is thinking of its younger gamers. However I have no intention of buying it as I already own the 3DS which I bought on launch.

Comment has been collapsed.

I think the name is silly (I already have a 2DS! Oh wait that's just a DSLite...)

But really it is a very good idea on Nintendo's part and I think it'll sell pretty well. It's cheaper and everyone I know who owns a 3DS already, myself include, rarely or never uses the 3D feature anyway. The design and speaker decision was likely to make production cheaper on them to justify the reduced price.

I really only use the 3D if I'm near my charger or if I really want to experience something in 3D.

i have a 3DS and i love the 3D, imo without the 3D the 3DS loses most of it's appeal. Then again i'm a weird person who is tired of mario and most of old nintendo franchises

I wouldn't mind getting one if they had kept the clamshell model. But now...nah.

I can definitely see how it would be good for kids, but also wish there was a model of it that folds or slides shut that would be good for luring in the people still hesitating because of the price and not really sold on the 3D capabilities yet.

I seriously would be all for buying one if it was. Looks like I'm still going to go for a refurb 3DS instead.
