So, do you have FDD in ur PC?

DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT FLOPPY IS? DO YOU?

I had an FDD on my 2 old computers. One is a Pentium II, and the other is a Pentium IV. The current one, however, has no FDD, because I didn't think I needed one.

i was too poor to own a pentium, I had celeron 433 MHz and we slept in a shed back in the days!

Hey, my pentium wasn't much better than your celeron. :P It had 350-450 MHz, I can't even remember anymore. 12 years is a long time-period. Good to know there are still some oldies here, tho. :P

yeah, but in that time (well.. always) the Celeron were a CANCER... really bad CPUs

The pentium 2 celeron slot 1 300/333A were some of the best CPUs ever for overclocking. The limited cache (non-existant L2 lol) back then didn't really matter when you were getting 50% extra CPU power for free.. upto 450mhz in most cases.

A Celeron is much, much worse than a Pentium of the same clock speed.

Yes, I have still a Windows 98 running. (good solid work). The only problem is, that having it in my network is a pain. And the Windows startup-floppy disk is still here, too.

I do. I don't even know why it's still there.

Now, who remembers 5.25 floppies? Or ever saw a ZIP disk?

Don't have one since years. The cheapness of CDs led to their replacement and now i use USB sticks. But i remember sharing savegames, cheat codes and the first the settlers with them

1 decade ago
Permalink

savegames you say? when we were kids we were sharing games like GTA2 on floppies, the problem is we used to put just the shortcut there and then we didnt know why this won't work

1 decade ago

Yeah, happened to me and my buddies a few times until we realised we didn't copy the whole game :D

Never played GTA 1 or 2 on PC though, had a PS1 for that

Those 8" floppies were really 'floppy' in the original sense, too, if I remember correctly.

Used to in my old PC; with a Pentium II processor, 24x CD-Rom (I think), 20GB hard drive (massive for the time) and my 3Dfx Voodoo 2 graphics card (oh the nostalgia). Can't remember how much RAM I used to have, though... probably 256 or 512MB.

EDIT: I used to have an IBM with a 5 1⁄4-inch floppy drive and a 486 processor, too... Playing Sopwith and Digger like a baws.

Does anyone remember the Turbo button?

512 with a pentium 2? and 20GB od disk WITH A VOODOO!? man, that was powerful!
i remember my old PII... 128MB of RAM in 3 cards... 8Gb of disk... the floppy (3 1/2), the big 5 1/4 disks...
the useless turbo button... the old AT power suply "now you can turn off your PC..... BEEEEEEEEEEEEP"... the 56K modem...
so many memories... so many awfull memories...

why call the turbo button useless?

i perfectly remember having to switch off the turbo so that the 8088 went from 8MHz down to 4,77MHz and I actually could play Tennis.

Well, his computer had a PII - I don't think those even supported turbo (correct me if I'm wrong) so his button probably wasn't hooked up.

Thanks for the nostalgia! Now i remember playing Digger all day with my friends sitting next to me :D. And yes, i also remember the turbo button and the lovely power switch with its on and off states because that PC wasn't able to shutdown on its own :D

I do, but it was a real pain to make it fit. I had to use an old audio cable (usually for old CD drivers/burners) and had to try basically all the spikes that could give it power until I found a random one that's definitely not there for that exact reason... But it works!

I remember my dad showing me this new video game but we couldn't play it because it turned out it required a "mouse."

So cool having a nerdy dad that worked with computers in 1988.

(By the way, did you know that by taking a pencil and writing on a punch card, you can increase its capacity by more than 1000 %, depending on your handwriting size? :-))

I have been using electronic systems for programming, for as long as I can remember.

I started out with a Casio PB 700 where I wrote a Paranoid clone and a 4 frame animation. Later on I had a Sinclair QL, then a system(don't remember the brand name) with 12Hz processor, 512Kb ram with Green Monochrome monitor. The first system had Microdrive tape-loop cartridge drive and the later one had both 5.25-inch (133 mm) and 3.5-inch (89 mm) size floppy drive. After that I had my first Pentium 1, 133Hz system.

So, returning to your question yes I know what floppy drives are and I only missed the 8inch one. ;)

Btw, you know the fun part of this answer? Most of this systems are still at our house and they still works like the first day. If you unpack them, no-one would be able to tell if they are new or 20 year old.

I still have floppies. I think 30 or more. I'm not counting the game floppies (like the Westwood games, Sierra, etc., or the first Police Quest game..in which I never made it out of the parking lot =/). I have a external floppy drive as well. It makes me nostalgic and feel a bit sad for the floppies that they just are not up to par anymore ^^
