When a freeware game is turned into shareware/paid-for.....
is it at the behest of the developer, publisher, or less likely, a specific digital distributor?

Nay, furthermore, please provide a list of free-to-paid games on Steam.

Thanks leave your tips.

Tales of Maj'Eyal

It's still free on the official website, Steam sells the "donor edition" with some extra bonuses and Workshop integration... good value if you like the genre

Ah that's another one, I was thinking of mentioning it in my post but forgot the name, and wasn't actually sure if it was that game in particular as some rogue-likes use similar art styles.

Eversion.

The name does not mention it, but the Steam version is a HD version. Still worth the money though because I loved it and I gladly supported the developer.

Though the paid versions are a lot more polished.

Look at all the "special" people talking about paid games that became free and free games that added content when they became paid. This topic is about steam being greedy, people.

"Steam being greedy" You mean the devs.

Asking money for their products... How dare they!?

I mainly wanted to make the point that valve isn't the reason these games got a price tag.

It still doesn't make them greedy (unless they're EA/Activision/2K who sell parts of the main game as DLC so it sums up to $120 for one game).

If I were you I would take a lot of what you read in here with a grain of salt. Honestly, I don't get all of these people that mention free flash or web-based versions of certain games as if they were somehow an identical experience to a proper standalone version. Among other things, you generally have to play in a small window/area and probably aren't going to get any kind of HD resolution/graphics. I will use Kingdom Rush as an example here -- I can tell you that it is definitely a significantly better experience being able to take full advantage of the display and play at native resolution with HD graphics rather than in a small-ass window.

The same game is the same game, even if the paid version has a little bit of added content.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you say so. It's generally an enhanced version with added content and/or features and not played in a web browser, which is hardly the best platform for a game. Now whether that is worth to someone personally, that's entirely up to them. To me it is for the enhanced experience as long as the price is reasonable.

Not in the case of pretty much every single game I've mentioned so far. Most of them were "HD" remakes, and that's pretty much the jist of it, a graphical update and some music remixes, they may have also added in more little easter eggs or minigames as well.
The only thing that comes to mind that fit that little "They were in browser so now they're better" arguement would be things by Edmund McMillan and Team Meat.

I picked it up there when there was a bundle (Groupees?) with it as a bonus. I also voted for it to be greenlit.

Insurgency and Chivalry: Medieval Warfare both used to be Free HL2 mods but now paid games,
also The Stanley Parable.

Well, The Stanley Parable is all new content IIRC, so that isn't something I'd include.

No Time To Explain, there's still a free version on Kongregate

This game was only greenlit as the dev promised keys to all existing owners of the game.
When the game was greenlit the dev went back on his word and claimed we wouldn't receive keys.
Unfortunately the devs of Speedrunners will have ended up suffering as many have boycotted tinybuild and anyone who associates with them due to the way they have handled the situation.

Vanguard Princess was and still is free in Japan. You're basically paying for the translation.

But the free version is an older version 1.08 and the paid game is version 1.41, but the game is almost dead, less than 20 everyday players on Steam.

How about features in a game? When Knights of Pen and Paper +1 was added to Steam, it still had a cash shop. They have since removed the cash shop and made everything purchase-able in the game.

Did someone mention Cart Life ? That was free then pay on Steam. Then the developer didn't feel like fixing the bugs anymore so he took the paid version off Steam and made it open source.

Eufloria was originally Dyson. Same spheres, trees, and seed-like units. There's a lot of new content, sure, but it's still a free-to-paid example.

They weren't exactly "freeware", they were regularly marketed games that, as many older games, were offered for free at a certain point to promote newer games or the studio that created them.

Just as Valve did with Portal or L4D
