Strange that no one has mentioned Disciples II. It has a great many-sided story, good music and unforgettable atmosphere. I've replayed it for like 10 times, and feel sad that Disciples 3 was such a fail compared to 2.

World in conflict. Best strategy game i've played. Too bad it's dead now and we'll never see the sequel.

  1. Place StarCraft 2 - I just love the Zerg
  2. Place Red Alert 2 - The old ones are always the best!

I kind of hate to hand the crown to Starcraft, because I was such a huge fan of Total Annihilation for so long. Total Annihilation is FUN, but Starcraft takes this due to it specifically being a "strategy" question. I didn't get into SC until a few years after it came out, but I had many good games with friends, and we all had different strengths and strategies. It's a lot more micro than TA (though I never played TA in multi much, so I could be misinformed), so mistakes can cost you big, but it also gives relatively decent opportunities to come back from small setbacks if you can out-strategize your opponent.

Runner-ups to Homeworld, X-COM (new or old), Jagged Alliance 2, and oldschool C&C (haven't played any of the newer ones)

Warcraft series, because other than that I've only played Age of Empires and Warhammer series, and both have different play styles that don't really 'compliment' my favourite.

Quite hard for me
Real Time: StarCraft series, because each race is really different from each other in playability.
Turns: Civilization IV (with V with all the expansions very close).

Steel Panthers. The scale is just perfect, and despite the amount of simulation, gameplay is still simple enough to get the hang of quickly, and most of all fun to play.

Civ, I'm undecided if V with all dlcs (didn't have a chance to try Brave New World yet) or IV with all dlcs. I surely spent more time on the latter than the former.
