Right so I was looking at the recent Painkiller bundle and noticed on the store page that I (apparently) didn't own Painkiller: Black Edition. I was contemplating buying this again, until I realised I already owned it. Does anyone else have this issue on the store page? I've also noticed I may enter giveaways for the game, even though it's already in my library Painkiller: Black Edition.

Same here. I already own the black edition but that doesn't register on the store page.

Painkiller: Black Edition has two appids in the Steam store.
One of them auto-directs to the other, so you might already have the old appid, and the Steam store is currently using the new appid, so you still see the giveaways for it on SG.

You can just hide the giveaways for it on SG if you already own it under the old appid. :)

I don't have it, you might have got it for free if you own another Painkiller game or something like that.. I have no idea ^^

Yep, same here. I've always wondered what the heck is up with it. I figure it has something to do with the old painkiller complete pack confusing steam.

I have the Painkiller Complete Pack.
On the Pack store page, it shows that everything is in my library, except Black Edition.
On Painkiller: Black Edition store page however, is says it is in my library.
Edit : just noticed first post is 7 months old

They converted/updated all Painkiller Gold edition to Painkiller Black edition but Steam itself wasn't updated correctly so it messes with people library :/

it's been this way forever, such a shame because I'd even pay an extra few bucks to have that unowned blight not showing up as owned.. grr..

It is because of a limitation in Steam's database architecture and the publisher modifying the game in a way they shouldn't have. They updated (Gold to Black), then replaced the original version and registered a new appID (the currently purchasable one), which they linked to the old one's store page. It's not the only game with this problem. It also means that the old version and the currently available one have totally separata community pages too, despite being for the exact same product.

I assume its technically speaking the same thing beside the different steamdb entry, right?

Some of the explanations above are more or less correct but here is 1 more summary that's a bit lengthy but tries to be as clear as possible.

If you purchase this game currently for example from Steam Store or get key from Bundle Stars, what you actually get is this version: https://steamdb.info/app/39530/
39530 is THE ONLY VERSION that has title "Painkiller: Black Edition" worldwide for everyone who owns it.

But there is no store page for http://store.steampowered.com/app/39530/ if you try to load it you end up redirected to http://store.steampowered.com/app/3200/

And there is an old version of this game associated with this ID number 3200. It is called "Painkiller: Gold Edition" and it is separate version that you can also own. "Gold Edition" is no longer sold on Steam officially and you can get it only from third party source. If you happen to own "Gold Edition" version of the game, only then the Steam Store and SteamGifts think that you own the game!

Concrete evidences anybody can check:
(a) Go to the Steam community page: https://steamcommunity.com/app/3200/ Evidence that ID 3200 = "Painkiller: Gold Edition".

(a2) archive.org's copy of Steam Store back when Black Edition was not released yet: https://web.archive.org/web/20070503122203/http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=3200

(b) Here https://steamcommunity.com/app/39530/ is Evidence that ID 39530 = "Painkiller: Black Edition".

(c) https://steamdb.info/app/3200/ Look at the "name" field. The "store name" is different due the fact the version they sell officially currently is the Black Edition (the store name data comes from ID 39530).

(d) There are only 2 rare sub packages (249 and 251) that allow activating the old Gold Edition currently: https://steamdb.info/app/3200/subs/
Purchasing Gold Edition enables access to App ID 3205 "Painkiller Editor" https://steamdb.info/app/3205/info/ as well, which is not included with Black Edition.

(e) Whereas here https://steamdb.info/app/39530/subs/ you find all the currently sold packages for the Black Edition. The sub licence you get from Bundle Stars' bundle key is https://steamdb.info/sub/8475/

This is why SG doesn't recognize that any user owns the "Black Edition" version of the game. The Store ID 3200 and game's true AppID 39530 don't match.

Here is an example how this kind of setup is properly done by Microsoft with their "State of Decay" game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/241540/

What needs to be done in my opinion:
SG should hide the giveaway ID 3200 so that it can be given away only by support request.
SG should unhide the giveaway ID 39530 so that people would make the giveaway with correct ID from now on.

Some major benefits from this change would be:
-Practically end reroll requests for this game
("Black Edition" owners can no longer enter the giveaways because the game's ownership is properly recognized)
-users don't need to manually add this game to ignore list anymore (and now when they do it, they are actually ignoring a wrong game)
-possibility to give away the rare "Gold Edition" version properly and get full CV for it (although that leads to another issue that removed games are worth 0P unless manually changed)

This same issue concerns also for example:
"Dawn of Magic 2" / "Time of Shadows": http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/m1zg9/ (resolved except title is still wrong)
"Check vs Mate" / "Battle vs Chess": http://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/19V2CsO (unresolved)

This issue was finally resolved.
Painkiller: Black Edition is now on the giveaway listing with its proper ID 39530.

If you have previously hidden the rare Gold Edition ID 3200 https://www.steamgifts.com/account/settings/giveaways/filters/search?q=painkiller
remove it in case someone gives it away someday, and you want to have chance getting it.
