I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials (real-time protection enabled), Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and SUPERAntiSpyware.

And no, I'm not using them at once. Only MSE is running in real-time.

Is it enough?

So true, plus if you buy AV you are more likely to get a virus. AV market is a huge (debatable) scam. Though Id protection is nice. Windows defender is pretty good on it's own.

What about visitting a bad websites? You can get virus like that. I'm not getting viruses, because I'm carefull, but sometimes you can click somewhere when you're searching something and you get a virus. Or i was working on a desktop, and I got viruses because of Java exploit, then some hours later again... I uninstalled Java, and it was OK... They already fixed it I think. I told my friend to download ASC for PC cleaning, it has also some anti-virus scanner. It found around 40 threats for him. Wtf? I dont know what he's doing on his computer. Horrible.

yes, in those cases. . . I'd use Ms security essentials or AVG. The market for Av is a tough one seeing as most new virus' attack AV. See internet security it a tough thing. I pay for AVG seeing as they seem to be honest and cover my internet. Still the safest is knowing where you are going, I mean no Av is 100% gonna protect you.

"I mean no Av is 100% gonna protect you."

That's why I have MSE, Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware. One can find what others don't. I like MSE, it's easy to use, and I don't even know it's running on my computer. No slowdowns from it.

Its true. I don't download crazy stuff and I got viruses. I checked the downloads and saw a video of porn was downloaded (which I never watch porn). Then a few days later the computer stopped working so I had to get it checked out. Stuff is working fine now after it got wiped, but I'm keeping extra precaution now.

Are you stuck in the 90's? This approach used to work, for a while, until viri and trojans got inserted into otherwise innocuous webpages, for example. Viruses and other malware get into your PC in all manner of ways, and not running any form of AV and / or firewall software nowadays is not only unsafe, but (if you keep abreast of developments in malware) stupid.

Also, running a form of browser protection like NoScript, with at the very least XSS attack protection is more than just prudent.

I use MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware too. All I have to say is avoid Norton, McAfee, and Registry Mechanics. A lot of times wen you go to install a program, it will try to install one of the above too so make sure you watch out. It was a pain to try to uninstall them.

Norton... I had it preinstalled on my laptop. When I uninstalled it, I wasn't able to enable windows firewall. And I'm not alone. When I installed it, it worked... Looked like they was forcing me to use Norton. I reinstalled Windows. And also found their uninstaller. + it was slowing down a PC.

It works for me too, but the first time, it broke my Firewall, worked only with Norton installed. Then installing a Service Pack fixed it too. Or another later try of uninstalling after einstalling a Windows. Norton is horrible. I'm not gonna pay for anti-virus, never. I'm not gonna pay for something only because some stupid retards with no life sitting only at PC and making a viruses to make someones life harder. Stupid assholes. They should at least show their ugly face and stop hiding behind the monitor. Hate hackers.

I'm not using any of this shit.
They are only slowing down your cpu and using too much RAM.
There is no protection by using anty-viruses. ;)
And when you get some of this fittle fellows:

  1. just burn it with fire!(format the partition with system.
  2. use fu*** image with backuped system & drivers.
  3. Dang!
1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmm. Some people aren't as childish as you. Actually anti-virus' do provide protection. If it is using 'too much cpu and ram' then you have a really really shit computer. Some people have professional documents that malware and trojans may steal, these documents may be very sensitive, and it may be difficult to back up everything that a person has. Please, Learn some stuff... then come back.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Yeah, wiping my HDD is not an option unless it's backed up.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not HDD, just system partition. If you don't have partitioned hdd - well - you, sir are in deep sh*t.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

so you advocate chopping up a hdd into many partitions just so you can nuke a partition when it gets infected because you computer is too piss poor old that you cant run a light weight av.

ya because malware has never been able to scan or spread across partitions and devices...
I mean its soo much easier setting up a mirrored backup and up dating it !daily! while also doubling you space requirments AND opening yourself up to attacks, data theft, and just generally aiding in the spread of viruses, malware, and spam.

yep, sounds so much better then keeping an av up or at least installed for manual scans.

also im pretty sure constanly reinstalling you entire os enviroment, even from an image back up, will do more wear to the hdd then being scanned once a week.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No matter how "good is your computer" AVs always taking too much of the cpu - because it can!
And when you grow up you'll learn that there are other ways to protect your important data(for e.g. secured hidden partition) and the "rules"/"dependencies" that you begin to notice potential hazards of different sites and files you download and you'll learn to avoid them / overcome. My approach is not childish, but practical. I'm not saying that I never used AVs - in fact I tested each of them repeatedly - So you formed an opinion about them. ;]

Cheers!

Yeah, I kept renewing my McAfee license out of habit but lately I've been very dissatisfied with it. The only time I got hit with some malware in the last year it didn't detect it and I finally got rid of it with Malwarebyte plus some registry editing. However it will block some legitimate programs and I end up disabling it from time to time just because they removed the option to make whitelists or to manually trust said pice of software. I might just go with either MSE or Avast when my licence expires. (Or earlier if I really get fed up with it.) Anyway, I use a virtual PC when I need to test some potentially harmful downloads. (Snapshots are a great thing)

I give support for about 8-10 computers of my family and friends, including my own. I use NOD32 with windows defender. Unless you disable them to do something stupid, they work amazing. Most of the time you forget you use AV at all. I remember using symantec. It was like computer was working to run symantec only :(

Good thing about NOD32 is that it has a gamer mode which is automatically enabled when a full screen app launches. so it does not eat much resources when playing.

PS: Never ever run more than one AV product on your machine. they don't get along
