I think that a 3 month sub is a great way to try out PSN+. Having only one month for a first timer does not do it justice. The person can see the new games that comes in. And also they can see that the game will remain in their library as long as their Plus membership is active.

It's not an incredibly easy game, and has some pretty dark shit in it, haven't gotten around to putting a lot of time in it yet but what I have played thus far has been really great.

Outland, Flower and Journey are afaik below 10 $ and are all good games (especially Journey is quite an amazing experience)
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are both amazing too, but not sure about the price of the bundle/the seperate games
Metal Gear Solid is a really nice classic

Dark Souls (prepare to die edition) One of the best games i have ever played. or Metal gear solid the legacy collection, The only game series which i have got every game from, All of the metal gear solid games are amazing and the story is fantastic. Ni no Kuni is also awesome. And also Red dead Redemption

Sorry didnt see the 10 dollar budget. Try DeathSpank on psn its 5-6 bucks i think, great rpg and funny(i dont know if you know or like captain quark from ratchet and clank but its the same game who voices Deathspank)

Persona 3 Fes is 10 bucks on PSN, but it's technically a ps2 game.
Nonetheless, It and Persona 4 are 2 of my favorite games of all time. This just made me realize all i've used my PS3 for all of this and last year is PS2 games.

Dragon's Dogma. It's sort of like Dark Souls/Skyrim in terms of combat but way more fun. The world is a bit small though.
