I just got an update (700mb), checking my DLC tab and saw I now have Dawnguard.
Bethesda ? Giving us a 20€ DLC for free ? Really ? Wow.

Edit:

THERE IS NO MORE DLC FOR FREE, THE GLITCH IS FIXED

I can foresee a potential problem here...

If people get part-way into Dawnguard, only to have it removed further down the track, will that screw up their saved games?

Well, that's a nice question. If you think like that, yes it will screw up their save games.

But if you think again, they'll have the DLC installed on their PC, so they might not get screwed. Dunno what they'll do with activations and so on, this kind of mistake never happen.

Skyrim DLC comes in .esm format, therefore you have to activate it in Data Files like every other user-made mod (all Skyrim DLCs act like mods and have no protection). Unless Steam is able to delete stuff from your HDD without your permission, people that have Skyrim installed will have this DLC as long as they have the files. The only thing Steam can do is to remove it from your account, but the files will still be there and playable.

Well already owned it anyways.

I think this is a mistake that might have been fixed already.

I didn't know, for some reason Skyrim started updating, but I had to restart my PC. Just before this, Steam updated.

Now I opened Steam again, and Skyrim resumed updating with 0 bytes downloaded. It was a ~700MB download prior to this.

Already fixed, the DLC no longer appears as "owned" for me.
Anyway, I disabled the auto update to be sure it not fuck up my save files when Steam removes the files.

Well, it's gone. But I still have the files.

It's "gone" now. However if you check your game the stuff is still there?

So. Free Dawnguard? Unless they do some weird update that makes it so that can't work.

Interesting! Guess you needed to download the files before the mistake was noticed, though?

Nope. Can't do that. It's yours. I played Dragonborn without owning it for months simply because my SO who I bought it for played it on my PC and got it installed on it. Found out a few weeks later that I didn't actually own it. Consider it Steam Family Sharing.

Heard thats how it is with Bethesda games in general, basically the DLC's stick like a Mod would.

I got a beggining of a download but it ended almost immediately with the 6XXMB bar complete (just opened steam now). When I look at the dlc I don't own it, and I don't have dawngard.esm in the list, but my custom settings got kinda reseted. I guess I'm not lucky..

I backed up the dawnguard DLC, now I can 'legally' play Dawnguard without owing it, thanks to valve/Bethesda's mistake.

As long as you have Dawnguard.bsa and Dawnguard.esm in your Data folder (and activated in Data Files) you'll be able to play it, regardless of what Steam says. :)

1 decade ago

I only have .esm..

what now? :o

Check in your installation folder, I have both of them in here, so, who knows XD

Both of them are in the steamapps/Skyrim/Data, but in Data Files there's only the .esm file.

After all this, is there somebody who actually don't own it (didn't buy it) but still with the Dawnguard files, getting Dawnguard achievements, or is it now just like any other mod (no achievements)?

1 decade ago
Permalink

You get the achievements.

1 decade ago
Permalink

DLCs are just like mods. You can pirate them and just put in Data, simple as that.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Still playing it if you managed to get it is piracy tbh, I deleted mine

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, it's really not by any definition.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Um... Yes it is? You weren't given a license to play it, therefore it's piracy. Granted, it's more of a gray area than most situations, and there's no way Steam or Bethesda will do anything about it, but that doesn't make it any more legal (according to US law).

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess if there's a sliding scale with balls-out, grog-swilling piracy at one end and legitimate use at the other, this is probably slightly to the non-landlubbing end of the continuum :)

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

US law as far as piracy is concerned is more like binary atm. No more fair use, its either piracy.. or it isnt.

Hint, according to big companies, everything is piracy now.

1 decade ago
Permalink

This.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Luckily for many reasons, I don't live in the US, so am not subject to its laws :)

Not that, for the record, I have any intention of pirating games.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If it's given to you for free on your account, and you did nothing (thus nothing illegal) to put it there, it is a mistake on Steam/Bethesda's part. It is not your fault as a customer. You are not committing piracy.

P.S. I'm more than happy to go over the intricacies of intellectual property law if need be.

1 decade ago

' You are not committing piracy. ' - do you own DLC licence? Yes/No?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So when a nice PR person gives you a candy bar for some promotion, you should throw it away, since you don't have a proof of purchase, its stealing.

They gave it to you, its yours. The license comes with the giving.

EDIT: I'm expecting someone is going to throw the "So if a shady guy comes and gives you a stolen car, and you take it, it's a crime." Yeah, but Bethesda isn't a shady guy, they're the creators/owners of the product, just like the candy bar guy.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

More like PR person was carrying bag with candy, there was a hole in it and some spilled at the ground, where people quickly picked them all one by one before she noticed.

No, PR person won't ask you to hand them back, as that would be bad PR, but she didn't gave them to you intentionally either. And no, licence NOT comes with "giving" unless you can point to Dawnguard licence on your Steam account. You're a pirate, deal with it :P

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No. In this case we didn't pick up the candy, it fell straight into our pockets.

What's the size of your downguard.bsa file? I think I couldn't download 100% of it..

Dawnguard.bsa: 1.187.540.597 bytes (CRC: 604207BF)
Dawnguard.esm: 25.056.932 bytes (CRC: BD72CCF3)

1 decade ago

Your files are bigger than mine. :/

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I don't doubt if they find a way to lock people out from playing the DLC they don't actually own.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That would require a recoding of the entire game.. much more expensive than just writing off the downloaded dlc.

Due to the way the game is encoded, the DLC files are not checked and are treated just like every other mod file you could get from say nexus.
