I use Steam as a go-to retail for digital games, but I hate using Steam and I know you do too.

And here I am once again ripping my hair off against an aggressively forced anti-user alienating BS when buying on Steam:

Everytime I purchase something, even though my PREFERRED payment is set to my Paypal account, even though I have to fucking 1. Login, 2. Get my phone, unlock my phone go to Steam app 3. Enter my Steam guard code 4. choose my payment method AGAIN...

...it's now fucking forcing me to use my Steam wallet credit without me asking or choosing it and even though I already set in both my profile and again while purchasing Paypal as my default, so I have to go through validation, and then 5. click on change Steam wallet 6. choose my Paypal account AGAIN so that 7. I can FINALLY make a simple purchase with my ALREADY TWICE chosen payment method.

  • My question is: is there any workaround or way to fix that incredibly annoying and alienating forced ish?

Thanks.

It goes for your wallet first,

And they keep telling us true Artificial Intelligence doesn't exist.

Why wouldn't you use the useless money first? I like that Steam goes first to Steam Wallet and then you can pay up the rest with any preferred payment method. You can't buy your daily bread with Steam Wallet, so why would you want to keep it?

Maybe because without you can´t buy Cards, Backgrounds whatsoever.
And if i remember right Minimum Addition to wallet is 10 (whatever currency you use).

For example there is no Point in burning a 1 (whatever currency you are using) Steam Wallet for a 20 (Whatever currency you are using) basket purchase just to later add another 10 to it.

Of course it all depends on how you lock at things and your circumstances.

amongst other things, yes that is a reason.

But then could just add the 20 first to your wallet and then purchase the basket.

I see. I don't buy cards, so I wasn't thinking about that ;-)

There is a workaround - stop using overpriced Steam store and start buying keys in other places. Simple as that. ;]

I do whenever I can. But some rare times, they do have deals on Steam.

None have it cheaper than Steam store for my region. GG.

It's no different to PayPal, if you have money in your PayPal wallet, you are forced to use it before any of your payment methods. Seems to be an industry standard introduced to protect idiots.

Hmm, they are switching to that on default.
But you still can chose to not use it.

But yeah i agree it is basically the same as with steam

Op said it in the first line. I'm not spreading "less hate", just responding to their unsubstantiated claims.

Or you know, just change the payment method every time you buy something. Not perfect, but it's better than accidentally buying with a 3rd party before using the fake currency.

Well, you're completely wrong. I'm testing it right now and I have the option to just pay with my card fully.
All you have to do is hit "back" and you have the choice...

at what moment do you hit "back"?

I have just tried and it works. When you hit "Purchase for myself" steam asks you to choose for another payment. Hit "back" when you are on that screen and choose what you want to pay with.

idk how you can prevent the wallet first scenario, but if you use enhanced steam extension you can fill your wallet up with custom values rather than the default wallet code prices. (basically always use wallet, but fill it with the precise amounts you want to use prior to purchases).

Oh, like 0€ for exemple? We can do that with enhanced steam?

i'm not quite following the 0€ example honestly. and i also forgot about the $5 minimum. however you can have it custom beyond that.

ah but that's the not the point, while I have money in my Steam wallet, I don't want Steam to rape me and alienate me into using it when I clearly chose to use Paypal as my prefered payment

i know, but unfortuneatly afaik there isn't a workaround for bypassing the wallet funds first. i was just presenting an alternative solution by accepting the fact that it will use wallet first, but to recharge the wallet with more precise amounts prior to purchases so you can leave a precise remaining balance left on the wallet after purchasing is said and done.

sorry, i know it sucks and it isn't exactly a workaround like you'd want. but it would at least still allow some remaining wallet funds (without having to heavily overfund. i.e. $20 wallet refill when you only wanted $3 or so leftover wallet balance).

Don't pay with paypal, you can buy CSGO keys on sites like OPskins (it's just an example but a reliable one) for around 2.05$ each (1.74€ today) and sell them on Steam market for around 2.3€ (2€ after tax). You'll get more money with your money.

Hmm ... just wondering, if you sign up for a second Steam account and gift purchase everything you want to buy via Paypal to your primary account, would that work?

Well that would be even more work for just not using Steam wallet every time.
