I did not knew you could comment on a review...
Isn't just the "Helpful" "Not Helpful" and "Funny" buttons?

You just click on the bar with the thumb, on the top of each review, and a thread opens where you can leave a comment. Or could leave, till now.

I think the 'Not Helpful' button doesn't do anything anymore, at least I haven't seen any "__ people found this review unhelpful" stats below reviews in a while.

What are the chances that people are just writing really helpful reviews?
...
You know what, never mind, that's a dumb question. You probably right, the button must be broken, lol

Probably because it was abused, people would click it just because they disagree with your pov (like when you write a negative review on a game with cult following) or just had some grudge against you (I had one guy mark all my reviews as "not helpful" + write some spiteful comments just because I rejected his friend inviite - and I don't even know who he is).

It's mostly used for hurling insults at reviewers and telling them that their personal opinions are wrong, e.g. "kys u fucking moron" and "totally should stay in your lane this game wasnt made for you".

I'm gonna take credit for this even though it's unlikely steam saw my thread or decided to change policy because of it.

I wonder if this means devs can't respond to reviews anymore too?

Permalink

Devs can still do the boxed comment in the review text space. But the comments below... probably not? I left a review a few hours ago and found out about the "comments disabled by default" crud when I looked at it in my activity feed, and saw the comment box was gone for me, the reviewer, as well. Took me by surprise, but I was able to change it to allow them quickly.

I guess you don't read Steam reviews often. On regular basis I see reviews which are stating something about the game which is just straight false and comments of other people who played the game help to clarify that...

I'm really sad about that change :<

They should also change the voting options for the reviews to:
Agree / Disagree / Helpful
So users who own the game could express their view on the review and non-owners could "upvote" good reviews.
"Not helpful" and "Funny" are pretty useless so it's good that they removed (showing) the former and they might as well do that with the latter.

I think Helpful and Not Helpful are actually much better than Agree and Disagree. If I'm reading reviews for a game, it's because I don't own the game. I want reviews that tell me about the game, and why a person liked or disliked it. I can't agree or disagree with a review because I haven't played the game. And if I've played the game, then why am I reading reviews for it?

On the one hand, Not Helpful has been used to bash well written negative reviews by fans of the game. On the other, I want to throw all the "this game is good" and "this game sucks" reviews down a deep, dark pit. I think the solution is to remove the Not Helpful vote, but also remove the written review requirement, letting people with nothing worthwhile to say just vote on a game without writing crap to do so.

The Funny tag is terrible, however, and needs to go. There are much better places to show off your comedic skills than in game reviews.

When you're reading a review that praises or criticizes the game, wouldn't you want to know how many other players agree or disagree with that? I think the voting options should be more clear, especially now when they allow disabling comments.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really, no. Reviews shouldn't be a popularity contest. I want a review that tells me about the game, and why the person did or did not like the game. I don't care if others agree with them. I may not even agree with them. What's important is that they explain their reasoning, so I can see if it applies to me. That's what's helpful. If I need a different view point, I'll just read another review.

Fans are predisposed to agree with positive reviews and disagree with negative reviews. Few are able to look at games objectively. Steam reviews already show the issue with agreeing and disagreeing. There are good games I've liked that have been review bombed down to Mixed, while games that I think fall somewhere between bad and terrible are Very Positive. Fans will inherently agree with positive reviews and disagree with negative reviews, while to me a well written negative review can be as helpful - and potentially steer me towards getting the game - as a positive one.

Guess the next step is to disable reviews entirely to combat abuse of them.

I've seen many well-written negative reviews get bashed just because people don't like seeing their favorite games get downvoted, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, it's unfortunate how often the "Not Helpful" option was used to bash a well written negative review by fans of the game.

If they own and played the game, why are they even reading reviews of it? Can't they form their own opinion, without needing outside validation?

Considering the amount of garbage people post in those comments, I couldn't care less.

The stuff some people are saying about review comments usually being garbage is surprising to me. I mean I know that happens but most review comments I've seen on average are helpful or thankful.

Is there a certain type of game where crap review comments are more common? Or does it happen most on super popular games (which I usually know well enough that I don't have to look at reviews much)?

you're completely right, and that's as always annoying..
I noticed for the first time while making yesterday a review.. I saw "comments disabled" (I'm almost a 400 Steam thorough reviews I think) and well, I thought I made some weird action myself without knowing..
Then I looked at the reviews of the past weeks and I saw they all were enabled by default.. so this really has no reason at all, in my view it's extremely annoying since I love writing thorough and well-written reviews and I don't want that Steam or whoever else messes around with options, I liked them as they were weeks ago and now I'll have to check every single time..
Plus, by default in the comment section it appears a phrase that probably in English (I've got my client and such set in Italian) goes as "the reviewer didn't allow comments to be posted" - stating literally "il recensiore" (= the one who wrote the review), as if I made the decision every time not to allow comments while it's Steam that puts it by default!

Meh, what a weird feature to implement... besides the obvious trolls and haters trying to undermine reviews with easy to see through butthurt, now people are able to spread misinformation or fake reviews much easier than before, when people were able to rectify obviously wrong statements easy via commenting. I'm all for more choices, but instead of limiting transparency and the ability to disagree properly leaving people only with the option to click some vacuous button... eh, I don't know if that really helps with cleaning up and ultimately is the right way to go. It's definitely cheaper than moderating Steam's community accordingly though, granted.

I didn't even think about how fake reviews or misinformation (intentional or not) won't be able to be called out in public anymore. People correcting things like that in comments has allowed me to avoid games that had a lot of deceptive/fake reviews. And people correcting misinformation in a review has convinced me on several occasions to check out a game that sounded bad from the way it was described by the reviewer, but was actually a good game that the reviewer just misunderstood or had an unfortunate personal experience which has nothing to do with the quality of the game.

This was a terribly bad way to deal with review comment trolling. Or rather, to avoid dealing with it, which is all they really did.

You can still leave comments on steam reviews...just checked

Yes but the reviewer has a checkbox to enable/disable comments. It used to be on by default, now it's off by default. It wasn't changed for old reviews, which is why you can still comment most reviews at the moment, as the proportion of reviews written after this change is still tiny.

Not a big deal IMO though
