Torchlight series could be some compromise between those. Also Final Fantsy 7, but it's semi-turn based. Ah, Ys series! Action RPG with anime style.

Celestian Tales: Old North Celestian Tales: Old North is very nice. Or The Amber Throne. And maybe Blood Code? Also Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure is rather old but really fun:) And of course all Final Fantasy games are great!

Since the risk is high in most of the cases, I would probably play this safer with either a good western rpg (such as witcher 3) or a modern great adventure with female protagonist, such as dreamfall chapters / life is strange or something. The only recent one with rpgmaker that I can think of, that had great storytelling was "to the moon". but not exactly an rpg, more of an adventure story.

you might want to consider a Ryo-Ohki/cabbit doll. she would probably think it is awesome compared to the ugly doll trend in america. some people also made companion cube plushies.

God damn it, how didn't I think of Torchlight 2 myself? I have a max lvl char in that, also looked at Neptunia before you guys suggested using the tag search, thought I'm missing something better though.
What about something like Hatoful boyfriend or Always remember me? Can you guys name few more like these which are also on 70%> discount?

Neptunia is a good game. I love it for it's humor. My concern would be that she might not like the combat in the game and find it to be too boring or lame (gasp) compared to what she's been playing (Diablo and Dota).
Have you looked at Long Live The Queen? It's a fun game. It's a short game with lots of replayability. It's also challenging to make it through to one of the many different endings.

Neptunia is a good game......but i would not buy it for others if im not sure that they like that kind of game.
And one of the negative points may be that it can be a bigger grinding for levels in that game...which can take up most of the play time..as you can still be at around level 20 with the characters near the end of the game.
I would may go with something like Tales of Zesteria (should be good for persons who have not played that much jrpgs yet.....use of gamepad recommended)

I played a rom hack of it before and would absolutely love to buy it now and play it again, but it's either that or making some giveaways, so of course giveaways win :p
I still remember exactly how some of the voice lines sound, the game really left an impression on me :)

You "could" indeed go with one of the more modern Ys titles in the franchise such as "Ys: The oath of felghana" mainly because it is more of an action rpg than anything else. But it all depends on if she likes jrpg style. I do know people who watch anime but would never play a jrpg so go figure. That's why I mentioned safer choices in my earlier post. You could ofc add wasteland 2 / pillars to those.
