Whoa, I had actually never heard of this - came out while I was living in Tokyo. Free download even...

EDIT: While in no way realistic (visually), it IS free and has great ratings - thanks for the suggestion on this one, I may try it, but am also looking for a more realistic sim.

Yes, there are some noticeable differences. AS focuses on complexity, amount of content and visual representation (e.g. real terrain/terrain deformation), but it has no modding capability and afaik it's plagued by bugs, glitches and performance issues.

FS on the other hand generally has less complexity and content and doesn't look as good (no real terrain/terrain deformation), but it's mostly free of bugs, glitches and performance issues, and it also has an active modding community that counteracts a load of the disadvantages FS has compared to AS.

Take it with a grain of salt. It could be that the problems that AS has (performance, bugs etc.) have been fixed by now.

All of these differences makes me wish someone did a game that combined all the best parts of these, but then again, I wish that about several games at the top of their respective genres.

Depends what you're into, really...

I've been playing a lot of Farming Simulator 2013 (Shameless plug here) and I really enjoy it! It has its own rewarding charm. It's also Cooperative... so find a friend and play! If you have any friends interested, that is...
I've never tried Farming Giant as Vercinger suggested, so I'm going to take a peek into that.

A more casual Farming game would be Family Farm or their more recent release Goodfolks - Though I'm not too big a fan of Goodfolks, it is far too obvious a tablet port.

Furthermore, I am excited for the upcoming release of Stardew Valley - Totally a Harvest Moon for the PC.
