Well, I'm looking for "choice matters" games. I know that there is category like that on Steam, but it shows me games like Witcher or Skyrim. I love the games where the most important thing is storyline and where your choices does matter.

"Choices does matter" is kind of thing worth discussing with this type of games. But in Walking Dead type (from same studio): "Tales from the Borderlands", "The Wolf Among Us", "Game of Thrones", "Minecraft Story Mode". If you care only about plot and choices, you should check out text-based games from Choice of Games (on Steam). I would say choices in those are way more important and significant than in any Telltale's games.

I know that in Telltale Games' series choices doesnt matter at all (the same goes for LIS) but I really enjoyed playing them. I'm going to check Choice of Games now. Thank you!

The reason Telltale Games' series are so popular because there's no competition. As mentioned above, telltale's choices doesn't really matter, hence the name telltale I suspect. But if you are into the "good story with choice" genre, I can suggest Fahrenheit: Indigo prophecy -(a true classic), Beyond: Two Soulds, and Heavy Rain. There are also choice tailored novels, if you're interested in those things. Most popular is probably Choice of Games as silencium9 mentioned. Most of their user-made games are pretty good too, they are under the Hosted Games label. Give those a try too if you like Choice of Games novels.

The most similar (but not really) I guess are Choice of Games games or Visual Novels. You might also consider some FMV games. Have you already played all the telltale ones?

No, I played only The Walking Dead Season 1&2. I was also playing the 1st episode of The Wolf Among Us on android and I really enjoyed it. I haven't played Minecraft: The Story Mode because I dont like Minecraft . I didn't try Game of Thrones also - I've never read any book of it or watched single episode of show.

Seriously, check out Game of Thrones. Best TV Show out there right now. And then read the books too. And then play the game too.

I'm a fan of choices and consequences based visual novels and games and I'd suggest you try
http://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=Choice%20of%20Games

especially Heroes Rise series, Tin Star and zombie Exodus. These are text based game with no images or sounds however. They also have demo versions you can try before buying any of their games.
Other than that I suggest Wolf among Us, Long live the Queen, Undertale, Stanley Parable and Monster loves you.

Pretty much any TellTale game since Jurassic Park: Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, MInecraft: Story Mode, Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones. Plus games like Beyond: Two Souls and pretty much any game ever made by Quantic Dream. And there is D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die, and more or less every visual novel. Plus if you want to go back, this used to be a niché (and justly forgotten) genre in the laserdisc era, when everybody and their mother were doing interactive movies, although in questionable quality.

Have to admit, it is strange to see how hyped people can be nowadays for these one-off movies-created-in-a-video-game-engine products. They used to be the trashiest products when they first showed up on the market. (But, then again, so were 3D movies, and nowadays those are the biggest money-makers…)

Most of the Telltale Games and all of the games published by Tin Man.
I'm not sure if this fits what you're looking for, but Her Story seems as though it might be.

Is cognition just more of a point n click?

Comment has been collapsed.

It is purely a point 'n' click, it just happens to be episodic. Before TellTale switched to interactive miniseries, they did episodic classic style point 'n' clicks; Cognition chose to copy that formula.

Well, this isn't completely true, though it's certainly largely linear. During the final episode there are characters who die if you make certain choices.

Beyond Two Souls was a little bit disappointing, the choices had almost no impact on the storyline.
Heavy Rain was sooo much better.

Have you tried "I have no mouth, and I must scream"? While it's not as obvious that your choices matter, or even that you have choices, they really do.

Another one is the old "Blade Runner" game by Westwood, again more "hidden" choices, but you do have some.

almost every telltale game (even the older ones)
blues an bullets
d4 - dark dream don't die
sherlock holmes (the testament of s.h. & crimes and punishments)
l.a. noire (but the choices and interactive story are just one part of the game)

other then the fact that choices dont matter too much (if at all beyond dialog switchout) & it was short, i'd say firewatch fits the bill for the most part... like mentioned before other telltale games as well..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, they don't matter at all in Life is Strange either, so the two games are close in that aspect then.

i didnt play life is strange yet, but watched my wife play quite a bit of it to know they are very comparable to each other.. firewatch was just themed a way that was more attractive to me so i did alrdy play that one.. ill still try life is strange out eventualy myself to know without a doubt, but from player perspective on firewatch and visual perspective on life is strange they're very comparable (except in length)..

Planescape Torment in some respects, you'd to get it over at GOG instead though. It's NOT "episodic" or anything like that, but choices make a limited difference.

Massively popular older game with ~800,000 words. Isometic RPG in the D&D style, live action. Multiple sideways where your choices can affect how you progress. The story is ultimately the same, but you can swap between alignments; Chaotic Evil, Lawful Good, Chaotic Neutral... to unlock different routes as such, and can even permanently kill off certain player characters through event decisions. Plus different dialogue in some areas depending on your profession even. Rogue, Warrior, Mage... a variety of weapon choices, NPCs immune to specific weapons or elements, and a full range of tactics all their own.

Of the first 10 pages of reviews (50), only two of them are 4 stars; and one of those because the guy "isn't a fan". Rest are 5-star. With over 10,000 votes; it retains a FULL 5 star rating, and with good reason. Have re-played it myself since its release probably more than a dozen times, and still perhaps never saw every single thing.
If you do have it, or consider it, be sure to check out a couple of the PST Mods too; they're more for improvements; better UI, Widescreen Fix, adding in various quests that were skipped at release due to budget limitations, etc. I think I saw a HD-graphics update a while back, but the graphics are already pretty good for the time.

The spiritual successor recently hit steam though. Torment: Tides of Numeria

Thanks for this extensive explanation! I own this game on GOG and thanks to you I just installed it and will play it now. Heard so many good things about it - lets see if it can live up to its reputation :)

If you plan to play Planescape, even if you don't want to fiddle with mods make sure to at least use the widescreen mod. While the game is fully playable without it, with the widescreen mod you'll get a more zoomed out view, and with that you'll be able to appreciate just how beautiful the environments actually are. The game also takes a little while to get started, but it's worth it.

Oh, and some advice:
Wisdom is your most important stat if you want to get the most out of the story & setting.
Intelligence & charisma are the other two stats that you want to be high, at least in your first playthrough.
Try to become a mage when you get the option to do so, it works best with the stats, and is more fun
