Hallelujah! No more forced DLC in games that ruin the experience.

Praise Gaben - this is awesome! I've always wanted this - at least ever since the MW2 DLC prevented you from playing in vanilla lobbies - but I had no idea they were working on it or intended to support it. Thanks for the info.

If you got L4D2 for free it has a "DLC" which prevents you from getting "GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT" achievement. So you can now just simply disable that DLC and get this achevement?

And what about TF2 premium? It disables your premium, decrease inventory space and you lost all your items or what? Or if you had a DLC item and you turn it off and on it disapears and apears again?

Can't disable if you get it via family sharing (ie. your account has paid and shared has a free copy).

TF2 Premium is likely a server side thing, so it won't affect anything.

I'm not talking about family sharing. I'm talking about the copy they gave away for free last christmas. You could just get it for free from Steam Store. It included a DLC which indicated you got it for free and it prevents you from getting that achievment (you get it for playing with a player who got the game for free during christmas and you cannot be the one who has the "free" version).

DLC is called "Left 4 Dead 2 - Christmas 2013".

Yes. And if you share with someone who has free version (and you have paid) you get DLC too and can't disable it.

But... WHAT?... But.. How is it connected to my question?

You asked if it can be disabled and I said it can't be disabled if you have from family sharing.

Otherwise, yes, it can be disabled.

But does it grant you an ability to get an achievement?

Probably this new feature will require re-downloading of parts or files in some games, because sometimes DLC files replace/overwrite vanilla files, and viceversa, to get them back.

I tried turning it off and then later on again. didnt download anything but worked. probably just modifying files e.x. renaming

confirmed with Binding of Isaac when I disabled the Wrath DLC, since the Wrath DLC expansion is basically a different game exe file

(also, awesome client beta update imo - since difficulty ramps up after wrath, no more need to put off the purchase of the DLC - can just disable the DLC and experience vanilla Isaac first)

Nice. A long time ago I had to ask support to remove the Skyrim high res texture DLC. And I just asked if we could get a feature to disable DLCs ourselves. They said they had no plans for it then. And now they finally added that feature. :)

About Skyrim high res texture pack, can't you just remove the .bsa archive from the game folder ?

I wanted to completely remove it because it also wasted 4GB of hardware space.
If I just deleted the files, Steam redownloaded it.

an example of a "to have or not to have" DLC - Binding of Isaac - Wrath of the Lamb. I wonder what will happen to savegames, in such case.

Savegames are still fine, at least mine was during my test - i disabled it and vanilla isaac still ran fine, re-enabled it with no loss in unlocks and data
Here's my screenshots of the stats page:
vanilla (note the 98/63 secrets!)
wrath re-enabled after being disabled

Interesting, I'll surely try this - want to play vanilla BoI, as Wrath of the Lamb actually made the game much harder.

That's amazing. Looking forward to the feature being implemented.

That's neat. Never needed to do this, but it's nice to have the option.

Now I could actually safely own the "bad" DLCs for Saints Row 4 and the Third, then disable them so I can continue never using them.
Excellent.

That's a nice feature. There are a few games that have overpowered DLC, like ones that unlock everything, and I'd rather not use those.
