Happy New Year everybody! Since 2013 is over and 2014 has just begun, what do you think the best and worst movies of 2013 are? I'll start off with what I saw this year and what I liked and what I did not.

Best:

1. The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug, not surprising finding this at my number 1.

2. Fast and the Furious 6, easily takes a pick at my number two. RIP Paul Walker.

3. World War Z, zombies.

4. White House Down, great action thriller.

5. Riddick: Rule the Dark, this movie surprised me with how good it did.

Worst:

1. Elysium, this movie looked outstanding, and then I saw it. It was horrifically bad.

2. The Purge, looked forward to it and it was shit.

3. Jack the Giant Slayer, glad I did not waste money on seeing this in theaters.

4. Star Trek Into Darkness, not that good.

5. A Good Day to Die Hard, expected better, got worse.

What was your top 5 best and worst of 2013?

I hated After Earth, I don't know how they managed to put Will Smith in a film and force him to act in a pile of mess with his annoying son who cannot act for crap

This. I was really annoyed, I figured the movie would be Will Smith being badass as usual feat. his annoying son in a cute 'bring your kid to work day' type secondary role as actors sometimes do. Instead it was Will Smith sitting on his ass while giving his son all the limelight even though he can't act and has one consistent facial expression.

Haven't watched it yet but I heard Wolf of Wall Street is an amazing movie. I don't want to watch the 2nd Hobbit until the 3rd one because I don't like the cliche 2nd movie in trilogy cliffhanger. I liked Star Trek Into Darkness.

Best:

  • Pacific Rim
  • Catching Fire
  • Sharknado

I don't remember any other movies I saw this year

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot that we got Despicable Me 2. Decent movie. But yeah, 2013 was not my year for movies. For TV shows on the other hand, I discovered both Breaking Bad and Arrested Development, both of which are now my top two favorite shows ^^

EDIT 2: Oh yeah, and apparently Iron man 3

EDIT 3: Monsters University. SHEEEESH

My "best 5 of the year" would be The World's End, Iron Man 3, Now You See Me, Identity Thief and The Hobbit.
Pacific Rim will forever be known as one of the worst movies of all time. Olympus Has Fallen was also a disaster.

I thought the acting was okay at best. And the plot line is total bollocks.

Orbital mechanics DO NOT WORK LIKE THAT. Stuff orbiting at the same altitude travels at the same speed. The debris cloud can never catch up with the ISS or Hubble. And certainly not every 90 minutes.

I don't think I even saw 10 movies that came out in 2013. :S

But the best movie I saw in 2013 by far, is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I don't even care to hear why the people who didn't like it... didn't like it. I loved it and it instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time.

in no particular order: gravity, frozen (sentimental value, it had been so long since the last time I went to see a movie with my little sis), the world's end, this is the end, and prisoners.

honorable mentions: before midnight ('cause a man can watch romantic movies too if it's sooo good, realistic, and beautifully written), pacific rim, world war z (way better than my expectation), and Stoker (a film made by the director of Oldboy, the one and only Oldboy!)

EDIT: just read the OP's thread again.....Elysium ain't bad, it's not as good as district 9 and there are rooms for improvements. However, it does not have many flaws, barely none at all besides the final action sequences can be...nauseating.

No clue how New Star Trek 2 and Elysium would be considered the "worst" after all the crap that came out this year.

You guys really don't watch many movies...
Best movies of 2013:
Django Unchained
The Wolf of Wall Street
Prisoners
Gravity
Captain Phillips
Inside Llewyn Davis
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Rush
Filth
Side Effects
Pacific Rim
The World's End
The Counselor
Stoker

Probably great movies that I have yet to watch:
Jagten

Best Horror movies of 2013:
The Conjuring
You're Next
Evil Dead

The worst movies of 2013:
Grown Ups 2
Smurfs 2
A Good Day to Die Hard
etc. (there are loads of them)

I thought Django Unchained was in 2012, not 2013? otherwise it would have been on my list. And most people were too busy to go see movie on Christmas, hence the lack of The Wolf of Wall Street (I will go watch it this weekend)

Also, Filth is not screened in the US. I heard a lot of good things about it and am waiting for the dvd release.

Jagten (The Hunt) was in 2012, but I watched it in 2013 anyway. Good movie it was, though that ending...do not get me wrong, it;s great but I prefer total resolution to ambiguity.

Yeah, I commented on the post below about Django. It started playing on December 25th 2012 in North America and Wikipedia says it started in January 2013 for Europe (so because I live in Slovenia - Europe I added it to the list).
I saw The Wolf of Wall Street just a few days ago and I really liked it (while it's not Scorsese's best movie).
Filth really shocked me actually. I consider my sense of humor really wide (or whatever you say) and it surprised me, so if you get easily offended don't watch it. It has similar style as Trainspotting too.
I have yet to watch Jagten, but I heard a lot about it and I believe it started playing rather late here (didn't really bother to check).

Comment has been collapsed.

Jagten is the kind of movie that makes you both hate and feel bad for humanity and their faulty logic. You might not be as shocked as in Side Effect or Stoker but if you are the kind of person who immerse himself into the movie/ the protagonist like me then you would feel so stressed yet helpless and impotent.

Comment has been collapsed.

It got really boring when they were at that Lake town, for an almost an hour nothing interesting happened, also some of the scenes are bad like the part where they were looking for the keyhole. It's way too much cliche no one gives up like that and I don't even care if it was like that in the book (which I didn't read). If they wanted to stay true to the book than they should have worked a lot more on that scene and many others and act a lot better so you can actually believe it.
At least in this part they showed some decapitating, but they overdone it and I still dislike the looks of orcs its way too CGI.

I thought the middle dragged horribly too. While overall I think both Hobbit films are "ok" to "decent", I really don't understand the overwhelmingly positive reaction to both films that most of this forum has for a series which is so obviously inferior to the LotR films.

+1
I could bare through the first half of the movie but at some point it was just too much bullshit to handle. The whole poisoned arrow to the knee bullshit, leaving few dwarves behind bullshit, hide n fucking seek with Smaug bullshit. Big fucking nope. I understand that he had to change some things since otherwise it would've been movie about walking and black screens with descriptions of places but c'mon... At this point I won't even be surprised if the kid, not Bard, will kill Smaug or even just a random bullshit butterfly flying by...
