I think you don't need vmware workstation, i'm using vmware player v6 to create virtual machines

Not really helping, but why Vista/8? If you are a Linux user and have to use something Windows-only you can just go for XP.

Can't you install Window in a VM like VirtualBox first? You would then have Windows to set-up your external Windows.

This seems to be a common problem as the host an guest OS are fighting for control of the drive.

can i install it on usb external drive without any pre-needed setups like for Win 7/8?
Bought external disk and wanted to put win 8 on it, but can't because it has to be installed on usb using some tools my Linux machine can't run and I don't have access to win 7 pc to do this installation.
since it's possible to run that pre-setup on vista, i'm wondering if it's possible to install vista on that usb drive like on normal drive?
