Too many combinations, mate / too many characters.

Need more spacing...

At least make one in the middle, or something please..

I agree.

Absolutely needs better spacing. I myself had some ideas, but nothing came out of them...

Big "X" digits, small "x" characters?

1 decade ago

if it were like that, how would I differentiate between A and a? ;)

X CAPS, x undercase, # numbers

the only thing I was sure since I saw it :)

1 decade ago

Yeah no uh, this is contrived beyond solving.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Is it morse code, no, there is no way to differentiate between where a character begins and ends, never mind we don't know what is short and what is long.
Maybe binary?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Amount of 'beep's and 'boop's combined is 30, which is not a multiple of 8. Already tried binary, so unless I'm doing it wrong, nope.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just out of curiosity, why's it have to be a multiple of 8 (edit: jk I thought you were talking about morse code)? But yeah, regardless, for 5 characters and 30 'bloops' (some combination of 'beeps' and 'boops'), on average each character has to be 6 'bloops'. The longest chain of 'bloops' for one character/digit is 5. There'd be extra letters/words in there.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because of how things are encoded in binary. A bit is a single digit and a byte is 8 bits. If it was binary each string of 8 characters could be decoded into a letter or number (or other symbol but we wouldn't expect that here).

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah I noticed it wasn't a multiple of 8, but regardless we don't know what would be a 0 and what would be a 1 so I put both possible choices below.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well if binary it is either: 001111000000111000000111010001
or
110000111111000111111000101110

1 decade ago

It's not morse code.

MORE CLUES

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Going to assume that the use of only two different symbols (X and x) is for upper and lower case. So there is either no numbers, or numbers are sharing a symbol with upper or lower case letters, or upper and lower case are sharing a symbol and numbers have their own symbol.
Any chance of clues? Maybe change any numbers (if any) to hashes (#) as opposed to X or x?

1 decade ago

Looks like a safe assumption considering the reply to ElClassico's comment below.

nope. I'm beginning to feel slightly disappointed in steamgifts. I was hoping you guys would be better.

alas, I guess I'll have to give you a clue.

Tell me, have you ever heard of a fine young chap named "Polybius"? I heard he was quite interesting back in the day.

I am familiar with him and his square, though it is a 5*5 square.

I've been working under the assumption that we are dealing with a certain obscure "standard" here, possibly a number 3 or 4. Problem is that the internet is rather barren when it comes to information about this obscure standard, and I don't know it by heart. Though one part messes with it, and that is a single character-type line (either 111111 or 000000) which probably means that I'm working under an incorrect assumption.

edit This is a bit on the frustrating side ;) I have an idea, but I just can't find the information needed to solve it, everything is focused on number 2 :(

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not sure how you can have the data you need for number 1 and the rest, but not for number 2...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You misunderstood me ;) There are several different standards, ranging from 1-5 and some that have other names, where 2 being the most common when not dealing with computers, and 3-4 being quite obscure. 2 has a character length of 5, which obviously don't work with this one.

attempts to not give too much away

Well, there's nothing obscure about this one - I didn't know about this particular method beforehand at all.

Trying to remain somewhat cryptic - I couldn't find a normalized numerical square... did you just make your own assuming it had to remain square? and/or how large did you make it? Heh.

This is the first puzzle I've seen that actually amused me on here. Good times.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yea I like this puzzle too, but there are several different ways to build the square, and after trying two of what i assumed were the most standard (neither of which worked, obviously), I'm not sure what to do next.

same here, i cant figure out how he built his square..i tried like 20 urls that seem valid already and each turns out to be wrong

I'm not sure why it won't work. I do get your message, though. you have three chars correct, and one of the trips you have is wrong. (my link has dubs, if you know what I mean.)

grah! had a brainstorm last night, tried it this morning and can read your message, but I can't figure out whatever this dubs trips thing is to get it corrected! :D
