Set in the same universe as Detective Pickachu. If it holds up to be true, we're looking at a possible Pokemon Cinematic Universe.

If it doesn't have Hugh Jackman as Bulbasaur and Samuel L. Jackson as Professor MF Oak I'll be thoroughly disappointed.

Pokemon Cinematic Universe? Not happy. Getting tired that there always have to be a shared universe.

What's the alternative, though? After all, just because it uses the same setting and a consistant shared narrative doesn't necessarily mean it'll be an ungaily, clunky thing like Marvel and DC's universes. Typically, a shared "universe" just means the films don't contradict each other's lore and give occasional nods to other offerings in the franchise. See Netflix's Defenders serieses, which are all very firmly stand-alone, despite their interconnections. That's a much better course to take with films than making them random and contradictory or, hell, rebooting the same (Spider-Man) IP fifty times.

Given that the films so far are all tied to specific games, it looks more like we're most likely looking at a set of color-based sequels with the occasional off-shoot, anyway. I don't imagine we're likely to see a seperate film for each and every "Team" or trainer in the series, after all. Though a Team Rocket film could be pretty entertaining and charming and compelling if done right..
(I think it was all fanfic stuff, but there's lore where Team Rocket are the good guys, attempting to liberate Pokemon from being forced into fighting and the like. Combine that with the general progressiveness of demeanor that Jessie and James have, and their comical approach to things, and you could get a great film out it.)

Old news, we've already got that ~.^

Despite my fondness of Ryan Reynolds, I totally forgot about Detective Pikachu (in fairness, going off the name alone, it wasn't exactly compelling to keep track of at first); The trailer looks incredibly promising, thanks for the reminder!
