How is it? I absolutely loved the original Dark Souls.

However, I really, really didn't like Dark Souls 2 (I never even finished it - it just didn't have the same vibe for me). I didn't like the way the combat felt anymore, and the world felt bland, boring, and lifeless compared to the first game.

I liked the combat in Bloodborne (although I missed shields), but didn't like the setting or the world.

Would I like Dark Souls 3? Which of the other similar games is it most like?

I didn't play Bloodborne, because I don't have a PS4, but I'm a huge fan of the first (did not care for DaS2) and Dark Souls 3 is making me very happy. I'd recommend it hands down. It feels a lot like Dark Souls 1 in play style, with the themes and aesthetics of Dark Souls expounded on in interesting and enjoyable ways. If you're worried because of Dark Souls 2, don't be- it plays mostly like the first game with some additions and modifications, but I was able to pick it up in a matter of minutes while Dark Souls 2 still feels wrong to me.

I put up a review on Steam and added a link to it; it's not a ton of info, but it expounds a bit more on my thoughts.

I loved DS1, didn't enjoy DS2 at all - will definitely get DS3 if it gets a sale (can't afford it full price right now).

You have a good taste, pretty much everything about Dark Souls 2 was horrible (level design, characters, hitboxes, combat, pvp). I loved ds1 had 500h in it, on ds2 barely 50 mostly because the PvP is so broken in this game.

If you haven't tired then I highly recommend Demon's Souls it has the best atmosphere for me. I keep returing to it twice a year and every time it feels as epic as the first time I played it.

This game is so great I'd buy a PS3 just for it. plus you'll be able to experience all of the awesome exclusives, especially if you like japanese games then you're in for a treat.

I actually find DS2 as a good game. Not as a good Souls game, but as a very good game. Not to mention that I find it far more challenging than the first one.

No ps4 so sadly no Bloodborne for me. Havn't played DS2 yet but back on ps3 I' ve put hundred of hours both on the glorious Demon's Souls and DS1, and also got their platinum trophy (then after selling ps3 I've buyed DS1 again for pc for playing dlc)

Demon's atm is my favourite "Souls" game. Will see in the future with DS2 SOTFS and a definitive edition of DS3.

I don't own PS4 so I don't have Bloodborne (like most of the comments here it seems!) but I have watched couple of playthroughs of it (mostly because I love Cthulhu Mythos and Dark Souls lore). I have just barely dipped my toes on DS III (yes, 47 minutes) to test how it runs on my PC, I'll play more when I have more time which could be tomorrow or day after that. My thoughts from this short time with new game:

  • Graphics look just amazing, I really loved the tutorial area and little spoiler especially the new Crystal lizard was fun and surprising, a bit challenging and I'm sure that newer players will get 'what the hell' moment with it ^^
  • Control scheme feels nice (Xbox 360 controller here, wired version), I dunno why they changed the jumping from DS I and II (or was it like that in II? I just switched it back to DS I style in the second game so I don't remember original from it), but I think that I'll get used to it. Weapon arts seem interesting, didn't try them much yet but at least non-magic guys have now something interesting too! Combat seems a bit more like DS II and the first one, mainly because it is faster but not Bloodborne fast / agressive. You still can use shield and tank damage BUT you can also dualwield.
  • Character creation was kind of weird; had a glitch where my char's face just froze and couldn't change anything. Also some premade color options don't do much but you can always change RGB manually through sliders. And premade faces look quite bad but that is Dark Souls for you.
  • Soundtrack is really great, I listened it previously so I have heard more than the 47min playtime would offer.
  • There seems to be some bugs and glitches; some have reported that all other start classes than knight tend to get crashes at bonfires, you don't see summong signs / don't get invaded and some have even been only able to check options and main menu since all they got is black screen after char creation. Don't know how much this happens and if the people have lower end hardware (well mine isn't much, over minimum yes but not recommended; didn't encounter crashes / frame dips yet).

If you don't mind some spoilers you could always watch couple of videos from Youtube or some other site (there are plenty of those since reviewers and some other guys got the game two or three weeks before release, made community quite salty lol). If you really like Dark Souls and Dark Souls II, I'd say that you will also like Dark Souls III. You can always wait and buy it later on if the price is too much atm :)

Now, after playing the game for a while, I can tell some facts:

  • The game has proven to look even more amazing; I'm really yearning to discover more places. Every single time I have found a new place it has proven to be absolutely amazingly crafted and unique. Even the poison swamp which can be found almost every souls game has proven to be beautiful :)
  • Controls are crisp, but I have encountered input lag couple of times. Not any major problems and I'm sure they will fix it in the future patches. Overall score on this front would still be 8 to 9 out of 10.
  • Soundtrack is pure awesomeness. Developers could discover some new sound effects though; hearing the same effects from DS 1 and DS 2 is a bit boring; those effects do their part ok but... come on guys!
  • Discovered some new bugs too; I was sun broing and helping some guys with the second boss (and collecting the epic sun bro medals of course!) and the boss glitched couple of times by floating over ground but not attacking. It took the damage and that stuff but didn't do anything. Just died sadly after the hp bad dropped to zero. Poor boss :) Also sometimes the hitboxes seem a bit off but that is quite rare.

Overall I would still say that if you enjoy the first Dark Souls you will enjoy this one; The maps are really nicely done and there seems to be much to discover, enemies tend to surprise and ambush the player like they should and the ai is solid Dark Souls level. Atmosphere is spot on. And yes, I have been invaded when being alone in cinder form (the new non-hollow form) so there is that (some people yelled that you can only invade people who have co-op partners in game but that doesn't seem to be case).

I remember this on Reddit.

Either way DS 3 seems like it is just like Dark Souls 1 and that is a game I have 30+ hours in it and if I could run it better then I would have more time in it for me. Bloodborne is really cool and while I only have 10 hours in that game I still love it, but obviously there is more patience required when playing Dark Souls rather then playing Bloodborne which is more focused on Agressiveness.
