Did you read the FAQ mentioned in the last sentence?

No one reads FAQ, ever. Just like no one reads EULAs when installing new software.

you can read the FAQ, but an EULA? fuck no, those things only say that you are the fucking customer, and you have no right about nothing in the whole universe...

"In particular, if you are a U.S. citizen or resident, you will need to provide us with your name, address and Social Security Number, and if you are not a U.S. citizen or resident, you will need to provide evidence of your non-U.S. status on an online form we provide to you."

Really, it's all there.

The FAQ you should be reading

It really isn't that difficult to comprehend. If you aren't a US citizen then you don't have to worry about it. If you are, either give up the info or stop trading on the market.

I always wondered [in passing, not enough to actually look it up] if selling stuff on the Marketplace could be considered income tax (in the US, at least) if you earn a significant revenue. I guess it can, and that's why they need personal information when you earn too much.

You are only taxed if you exceed $20,000 in profit (in a single calendar year). Valve will automatically forward your information to the IRS

Weird, I was expecting much less considering YouTube reports ad revenue (and issues a 1099) when you exceed $600. Wonder why they wait until $20,000 considering people might have other forms of income that already exceed the first tax bracket, and $20k is a fairly significant amount when it comes to taxes.

I'm sure the IRS is ok with it though, in which case, whatever.

EDIT: it's total sales (aka revenue), not profit.

EDIT2: apparently this is all due to Marketplace being part of a third party payment network, so my YouTube comparison does not apply because it's under a different law. See my post below.

shouldn't they ask after certain amount rather than after certain number of items?

Seriously, it's covered in the FAQ.

I wasn't talking about why valve is doing it.. I was only saying that if the reason is what 'blahmoomoo' says.. then shouldn't it be the way i was saying..

Apparently 200 transactions and $20,000 is actually part of the law they refer to in the FAQ. See page 4. click

Looks like this law is related to a third party payment network, which is why that YouTube comparison above does not apply.

If they ask you for your information you should give it to them, but they probably won't check if that's your real name. You trust them enough to buy from them, but not enough to give them your name? Not to mention it's more or less the information one usually puts on Facebook anyway. And if someone would actually get hacked (not social engineering, spyware, etc.) I am pretty sure getting your personal information wouldn't be that hard.

They only ask for your name and address if you're outside the US, it's the sort of things websites siphon from you all the time, might as well give it voluntarily for once.

Yeah, I did it it 2 or 3 weeks back when I decided to list enough cards to buy DayZ with. Listing about 300 items in one go was a pain but that's a different story. Anyway, just had to fill in a form. They did say that sometimes they will check the info so I entered genuine details.
