question about Desura and Steam...

theres a few games that are on both platforms that i'd like to get...
for example Cherry Tree High Comedy Club.....

i know if i buy it on Steam, im not gonna get a Desura key out of them...
but if i bought it on Desura, would i be able to get a Steam key?

i dont know if im having a brain fart or not, but i think i read somewhere that any game on Desura thats also on steam, a key can be gotten....is this true?

In some cases, you get a steam key if you bought the game on desura before it was greenlit on steam

No, the last statement is not true for any game.
Sometimes you get a Steam key as SuicideBroccoli said in his post or from bundles that provide a Steam and a Desura key as well, etc

Anyway why do you need both Desura and Steam keys for the same game?
Please respect the developer and his work and do not ask for 2 copies of the game for a price of one.

Actually why do you think this is a disrespect? If he's going to use the Steam key for his personal use I don't see any fault on that.

AFAIK Valve takes about 30% of the price of every sold game on Steam, so i believe developers lose some money then they give away steam keys. Also i see no reason to have the same game both on Steam and Desura, so people usualy give away or sell spare keys.

Please, provide some proof for your statement if you know the facts.
Officially Valve states this:
"4. What is your revenue split?
We don't discuss our revenue split publicly. Once your game goes through Steam Greenlight, we'll get to those details."

If this is really 30%, then that's a lot...

You might see no reason for that, but some people (or maybe a lot) prefer to have the same game on both platforms for their own use (I'm one of them).

It is 30%, though in general it's not really bad. And also Valve allows free keys from other platforms. Or that is my understanding...

someone actually leaked that it's 30% which is quite common for only stores like steam

When you think about it 30% isn't really much if we talk of low priced games. Payment processing isn't cheap and can really hurt in some cases. Also keeping content available and the initial rush is an other factor... For other retail outlets it's not so good...

That reminds me of Apple's 30% share on their appstore.

Phil Fish asked people to buy Fez on Humble Store and not on Steam so he could get more dosh, so it is allowed. (link by the way)

But a dev can offer steam keys for those buying on desura as valve only takes a cut on games SOLD on steam, not redeemed.

Not necessarily 30%, but the commission Valve charges is on games bought through Steam, not for keys issued by the developer.

Developers can generate unlimited steam keys for free.
The 30% is only taken for sales through the steam store.

Why do you need the game for both clients?

You can add games to either client that are on your computer so there's no reason to have keys for both clients unless you're trying to sell/trade one and keep the other for yourself...

Steam games have achievements, leaderboards, cards, time tracking and so on.
If you add a Desura game on Steam as a non steam game you do not have access to those extra features.
Don't you think that's a valid reason to have it on Steam as well?
Why everyone has to be guilty until proven innocent? Usually it's the other way around...

If that's the case then why would they also need the game on Desura..?

Because they have a library over there as well + games not available on Steam. Also, mainly I'm talking (and the OP) about the case to have a game on Desura already and then asking for its key on Steam, not the opposite which is a rare case.

Buy it on Steam. Click the blue Desura icon on the top left corner in your Desura client. Go down to "Tools" and select "Find Games Installed". This will add every game on your computer to Desura, assuming that they are available on Desura.
