It doesn't have achievements or other Steam-only features so a DRM-free version is a better option by far. You may have heard of owning games instead of just buying a subscription.

With DRM-free games you're actually in control of your games. If Steam randomly decides to suspend your account maybe you'll understand.

I just got the game at GOG yesterday and played through the entire thing and have to say it was a pretty touching experience, especially since the stars are my favourite things ever. I didn't find it a particular fun game to play, but the story definitely made up for that. If you're good with basically just reading dialog for 3 hours and willing to play it just for the story, then do it. $4 is a fine price for it.
