I can't speak for higher tiers, but 10-30$ is usually enough for a digital copy of the game - it's still quite a gamble, but compared to the recent AAA games it's not really worse :D I've backed projects with 10-20-10$ I think in the past, those could be done as any purchase - but it's really only recommended if you can deal with potentially getting nothing or different that you'd want.

Frankly, I am more surprised that there are people who would rather give money to Peter Molyneux than to some unknown upcoming dev.

Is it? Because looking at post Dungeon Keeper/Black c White 1 Molyneux's portfolio, it seems to fit in just fine.
The sad truth is that Molyneux lost the faith of most of the people long-long ago, with only a handful of dedicated fans holding out, until probably even many of those just had to face reality after they realised that Godus and the other games will never be anything more than beta demos.
So, in the end, I'd only trust Molyneux with money if it comes from a large publisher and a manager above him with a very, very firm hand. Creativity may need its freedom, but the creators themselves have to be forced to finish the damn thing they started.
