Recently, I've had a habit of buying games for pretty much no reason. Spent $350 on games I don't even have the console for and $350 is just a nice estimate, a very nice one. There's still the rareish psp games I got that's out of print and I refuse to get a used copy of plus the system itself that I didn't add to that equation.
Also, it doesn't help that I aim for the collector's edition and currently I'm importing games because some of sequels aren't released in the US but importing is cheaper than buying it from ebay so I have that going for me.
So, how do you refrain from buying games because I kind of need help at this rate?
I have no self control

Buying games for a console you dont own? I would never even think about doing it, it's just a waste of money!
Just dont waste money in something you wont play, and dont think 'I may play it one day' because you wont. I feel I'm wasting my money when I buy a humble bundle for only one or two games of it, and it's jus $1... D:

It's not a total waste. I'm planning on buying SSX 2012 for the Xbox, but I don't own an xbox yet. Planning on getting that as well, I used to own one. :-)

Think it's a disease, and we're all infected. :) I avoided buying some in the sale by looking at all the stuff I've never played from all the previous sales, but it's difficult to avoid those 90% discounts. :(

If you ever solve it, let us know! :)

get a girlfriend (if you do not have one right now.)

if that's not the case, indulge yourself into another activity...maybe buying shitload of doctor who merchandises or shirts you'll probably never wear because they are too geeky.

edit: except this one I was able to go on a date with this pretty chick becuz she was into Firefly.

Buying doctor who merchandise won't help ;_;
On a related note, my brother is collect nendoriods and those things don't come cheap, well good ones at least

I actually collect Danbo figures once in a while, mostly when my Japanese friend comes back and forth between Japan and US.

But seriously, if you want to refrain from buying games, make a budget plan. You will be amazed how many other things you can get when you save 25-50% of the money you spend on purchasing video game. (might sound weird but I ABSOLUTELY love my new bakerware set. I used to have to sift flour through a strainer-sifter which was really cheap but ain't that effective for a large amount of flour but now with this baby, I can make load of cakes faster and easier.)

correct, that's why you should be sharing though you should not let her keep a 360 or a PS3 for a week or more...who knows if you two will break up between that time and she will break it as an act of revenge.

my ex was not a gamer but liked to play anw. I usually invited her over to play outlast to get her scared enough that it would be impossible to detach her from me...huehuehue

Pretty much this. I am irresponsible when it comes to control... It is a family thing. My mom owed a million dollars on furniture and ended up having to file bankruptcy. Do not ask how she pulled it off, I think the furniture is shit and nowhere near worth that much, thank god bankruptcy is a thing for her. I am fortunate enough to be addicted to buying video games and not furniture! xD

I have this problem- never bought games for a console i don't own, but ive bought plenty of games i can't run yet on my laptop.

My reason in particular is like im looking for something that isn't out there; Something that will blow my mind and suck me in, some games came close to that in the past and i know some will do that in the future, but the only way to know if theres any hidden jewel out there is tryting then all. Thats hard.

A cure? Finding the real problem. In my case is a lack of enjoyment in my life lately + heavy ansiety, knowing that is easier to ook foward for a solution.

I can't wait to try out steam family share with some friends with big librarys; That way i will be able to spend less on games, buying stuff i know i will dig into.

GBA (Game Buying Addiction) is a behavior found in most gamers worldwide. Fortunately, it can be fought back most of the time.

Most gamers have Oniomania, especially when a Steam sale hits.
Oniomania is, quoting Wikipedia, "the compulsive desire to shop, more commonly referred to as compulsive shopping, shopping addiction, shopaholism, compulsive buying or CBD or Sushma Syndrome."

Three thing are needed to fight against Game Buying Addiction, or Oniomania.

  1. No funds
  2. No credit cards, or hard to reach them. (You can hide your card inside a vault, or ask someone you trust (family member) to hold on to them)
  3. Self control

If you have what is mentioned above, you have approximately 76.63% chance of skipping a purchase.
Remember, it's mostly all in the self control. When a sale starts, go outside, or keep yourself busy.
Good luck!

  1. My bank has a $500 reserve line of credit in case I overdraft and rates are very low
  2. I don't had one and just applied for one for easy spending
  3. You see, my self control works like this, I can control myself next time but I don't want to right now, maybe next time.
I actually keep myself busy by looking at what to buy next.
    I'm pretty much screwed.
From the looks of it, I just need to work on self control then.

When I get the urge to buy a game, I search for negative reviews for it. Even if most of them are not at all accurate, it helps me gain control of the urge to buy something. I only bought a few games on sale this time, but saved quite a bit of money using that method and refrained from buying many more.

Very easy:
I live in a commie hellhole (the Bolivarian Republic of Asstardistania, also known as Venezuela) where we have this thing called "currency exchange control", which limits every citizen with an AUTHORIZED credit card to only $400/yr for online purchases.

And given that our creditcards are also buggy as hell and love to bounce transactions for no good reason, this means three things for me:
1) I can only buy games twice per year
2) I can only buy from bundles and sales
3) I can only buy downloadables, not physical (as buying locally is expensive as fuck, and noone carry legit PC games here. Oh, and buying from Amazon and stuff is a no-no unless if you want to get assraped at Customs just to free your package)

So yeah, I can resist the temptation and continue with my life.
