Problem with GFWL is that it has it's own region locks different (and usually more limited) from Steam. Guess that prevented/prevents a number of people from getting this game...

How is that wrong ? That's the very principle of VAC : cheaters are punished and isolated.

Very often VAC confuses programs like GeDoSaTo for hacks, and causes players who are just trying to make the game work correctly get VAC banned for no reason.

it was removed for DS2?? so you mean i could have used GeDoSaTo for nicer graphics all the time without being afraid of a VAC ban? oh well... ^^

I've been waiting for this for a long time.
But this part bugs me a bit "the transferal of save data and achievements will be possible for a limited time only."
I have completed everything and got all achievements on GFWL. I hope all the achievements won't unlock at once.
Either way, Steamworks gives an incentive to play the game again after so long.

You can still use SAM afterwards to remove all your achievements and start anew.

Just like in Steam, saves and achievements are separate things. Save files are... files, stored on your computer (and sometimes in a dedicated cloud storage space), while achievements are just an information tied to your account.
I assume the migration of saves and achievements won't be automatic, there will be something to do... Just don't do whatever needs to be done and achievements and saves won't move to Steam.
Even if they migrate without needing actions from the player, you can delete said saves and/or remove achievements using SAM.

I remember getting one enraged player sending angry messages. He left a red summon sign at the bonfire to S&O and he was summoned by some guy I was helping as white phantom. Told me I shouldn't have summoned him if we were going to gang up, which isn't even something you can do as white phantom >.>
