So, the guys behind The Body Changer have been deleting every negative comment about their game on both the Steam community and the Desura game page for a while.

They got a lot of flak from the Steam keys debacle following their Greenlight campain. For those unaware of what happened, the developers put their game in a Groupees bundle that included Desura keys. They later put their game on Greenlight and , to help raise awareness, they spammed anyone who had redeemed the game on Desura with requests to upvote their game. That got them greenlit and the game was subsequently released on Steam. At that point, they doubled their price and provided Steam keys to those who had bought the game directly from Desura and those bundle buyers who had brown-nosed them. The rest of us got the shaft and we were told that if we wanted to play on Steam to buy the game again. They started deleting any thread that popped up discussing the issue, and kept on deleting negative comments up to this day.

The people that got their keys went on to write all kind of positive reviews and never played the game again. Looking at steamcharts this game was DOA and no one seems interested in actually playing it. There's bound to be some legitimate reviews among the lot but I can't figure why anyone would actually enjoy this.

When I saw that the game was part of the gem auctions and going up for next to nothing, I decided to grab a copy. It only costed me pennies and none of that money went to the dev so it was a win-win. I figured I could do an actual review of the game that they would not be able to delete. I did give the game a fair shot though because I wasn't going to post a "This game it shit" review if it was actually great. I was going to include a warning about the developers themselves being scum though, no matter what I thought about the game. The fact is, I quickly figured out why no one is playing. The game is clunky and boring as hell. It was that way when they first released on Desura but I hoped it had at least significantly improved.

The dev was quick to claim that my review wasn't honest and that people thought their game was the best indie game they had played this year. (Could be true if it was the only indie game someone had played.) I wrote a lengthy reply and what the dev did in return was to flag my review as off-topic and reply to it with some really immature comment. Apparently, you're not allowed to dislike their game.

I would appreciate it if any of you would be so kind as to upvote my review (as long as you agree with it of course) so it stays on top and help raise awareness about these guys.

Also, since you made it all the way down here, I think you deserve something for the time spent on reading this wall of text.

Please do not harass other reviewers. They are entitled to their opinion whether you feel it's legitimate or not.

Update
The developer (or Valve support, who knows really) has removed the off-topic flag and is now blaming my posting of a giveaway at the end of my rant as a dishonest way to promote my review.
They also banned me from their forum for "Trolling and insulting"

Hahaha! Look at the percentage of people that found the positive reviews helpful. Averaging ~12-14%. I suspect people are seeing through those reviews. Or is it the Steamgifts effect?

I think the Steamgifts effect is at play here. This community has been awesome and I've seen a staggering amount of votes on my review, most of it positive. (There's been a few downvotes as well but you can't really expect everyone to agree to whatever opinion you're presenting.)

It's easy, they shouldn't be able to flag/delete or influence in any way the reviews or posts on forum. But Valve would have to introduce that and that's not so easy suddenly.

Would you do the work and make a game or something similiar you would do same and trie to do everything to sell it.

Permalink

Not by deleting any comment that doesn't put my game in a good light and treating my previous customers like crap. Had they given keys to every previous buyer, this would probably have given their game the traction it needed to get some visibility. It's their decision in the end but what really ticked me is their insistence to put down and insult anyone who disagrees with them.

To be honest I'd rather try and sell the game by making it enjoyable and well-optimised, then market it regularly and let folks give honest feedback which could be used to improve the game.
Do you recall when that one Gamespot employee was fired for saying Kayne and Lynch sucked so much dick you could reclassify it as a sperm-powered hoover? This is the same kinda thing and it's entirely unacceptable.

There are some boundaries you should not cross, and no, doing "anything" isnt right.
I saw few of yours posts, im not even sure if you are trolling or.. let's leave it at that.
The seller should always try to keep good image of himself not to scare customers away, its as important as the product itself being good quality, what this dev is doing is completely opposite, not only he tried to use some underhanded ways to "game" the review score on steam, but he also did it in such a stupid way its obvious to anyone that reads the review's comments that they are fake/bought. Also, the unprofessional comment under the review, and the fact he can't take any critic on forums show both immaturity and lack of proffesionalism.
Personally I avoid such devs like a plague, even if im somewhat interested in the game itself, it's not worth it supporting someone like that. The only good part of this that maybe, due to stuff like this happening more often, steam finally puts more control over greenlight process.

No, because then you ruin your entire reputation. If your game sucks so bad you can't fix it, take what the reviews tell you, and try to make a better game. You don't try to fuck over the entire gaming community, or we get pissy.

the can't delete it themselves but they can flag it as off-topic and ask their Valve contact to do it if I'm not mistaken. Not sure how much is done on Valve's side to ensure that the reviews are actually off-topic before they act on it though.

Permalink

this is off-topic, it's a review to the devs and not to the game
before The Body Changer got greenlit i got an message from the dev on desura saying thanks for the support, i replyed saying that i had not played the game yet but because of that message i would try it soon, wich the dev replyed saying thanks once more what showed that they actually trying to do something (unlike the The Slaughtering Grounds), i really got an awesome feedback from him/them, i never actually played the game because i had some problems and totally forgot but the game looks very legit and i never expected that answer you got on your review

Let's not forget I had the game on Desura already from the bundle. That playtime doesn't show up on Steam. I played long enough to see things haven't really improved much from the Desura version. If the first 20 minutes of playing a game gives me a lot more grief than entertainment, that game goes to the trash pile anyway.

As far as boosting, I'm not promising anything in return and I'm honestly asking people to upvote only if they agree.

Any of these "vote and get key" games are a pain in the ass and are usually not so good. Especially if the devs aren't respecting the end of their deal. You got my vote!

No Steam key was promised since the bundle ran even before their Greenlight campain. And if this was the only issue, it would probably have blown over by now.

It's a combination of the fact that the dev spammed us, chose who they gave keys to, deleted negative comments and gave us their childish and condescending attitude that kept the ball rolling.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

putting it in a greenlight bundle and not promising/giving steam keys is still a problem imo. but i didn't like the game anyway and didn't even buy that bundle so it has nothing to do with me.

edit: looks like it was not a greenlight bundle. nevertheless i don't think its timing was coincidence.

When i've revieved the game i've got some "flames" from the developer in my Desura account telling me i've downvoted the game for some kind of revenge about the keys and their game is good etc. and not only that, after a while i've even got messages in my profile from a guy saying how good the game was and how i should change my mind... i don't even.
They probably spend more of their time "buying" reviews and flaming people than actually working to the game because, and with all honestly here, the game is like a 3 old years alpha.
Also claiming the game a metroidvania makes me feel so bad inside and i can't even esplain how much really...
If you want to see it this is my review, i haven't added the stuff from the last patch because... is just an arena... so no maybe later.
That's it, what makes me fell even worse is how they are treating the community. That's their choice anyway.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My unsolicited thoughts:

IMO, anyone who has purchased a game has earned the right to post a review. It should then fall on the Steam community rate it for helpfulness. The developer should have no hand in the process.

I couldn't help feeling that your own spelling & grammar should have been impeccable if you were going to go after the devs for their "engrish" instructions.

Honestly, your final paragraph does feel off-topic. It is meant to be a review of the game, not of the developer, after all. Some readers might be assume your negative review stems from bad blood. Besides, I find the unprofessional responses of the dev to be more damning of his character than your accusations anyway.

English is not my first language so it's quite possible that I left a few spelling and grammar mistakes in there. Still, I feel it's a lot better than the botched phrasing of many lines in the game.

The developer's attitude and the game itself are part of the whole "experience" package. While I agree that this normally wouldn't be the place to discuss problems between the developer and community, the fact that they erase negative comments everywhere else left only this spot to warn others interested in the game about who they'd be dealing with.

Couldn't post a review since I don't own Steam (and its so shitty that I refuse even to bother with emails), but left a post of my own under some reviews:

"The truth is you haters want the Steam key for your friends. Nothing more :D"

And your point is?
You promised the damn key than give it, don't make us chase you and beg for it.
Even though I bought the bundle for another game it doesn't matter.

I'll give it to my dog for all I care**. At least that way it will seem like someone actually plays the damn thing more than 10 minutes.

**I will make him play only when he misbehaves (I don't want trouble with animal-rights folk).

EDIT: I'm aware it doesn't say you'll get a key on the bundle page. I was under the impression they reached out to every owner on Desura (don't know why I even made an account) with the same message: support == game.

If they just said "no keys for bundle buyers" or "no key for anyone who bought the game prior to our Greenlight campaign" and left it at that, the whole thing would have probably blown over by now. It's when they started giving preferential treatment to people doing favorable reviews and deleting criticism that things really got ugly.

Reading your post I suddenly remembered that I got a private message long time ago about a Greenlight campaign from someone on Desura. I logged in now to check it out, and I got it from the dev of this game. Fun fact: I don't even own the game on Desura (or on Steam). So maybe they spammed randomly, I don't know.
One thing caught my eye in the message though: "It would be REALLY cool to hear some critics and comments!"
