Ok my little brother is 10. He pointed out a smartphone he wanted on ebay. I said no, and he said that he'll pay me $10 extra dollars, should I?

I'm pretty sure my parents are going to be mad, because everything my brother does wrong i'm the one who gets blamed. So yes or no?

Btw he wants to use it to play games. So it won't have service.

EDIT: I FORGOT SRY, OR I CAN GET HIM A PSP, YES OR NO??

Basically what I went through when my housemates decided to drag me to hang outside because when I'm at home, I'll be in front of my laptop almost all the time.
Once we're outside, what happens? They were all ogling their smartphones, and I'm the only one trying to start a conversation or stare blankly at nothing. It's absurd.

But...but...but how...how they gonna play Angry Birds? I saw tons of under 10 children with iPads saying "how you don't like Angry Birds is the best game ever, you should play it", also some 10 year old twins of some of my parents rich friends have an iPad Mini, an iPhone 5/5S each of them, and more stuff which a 10 year old doesn't need, and they use it to play games and make photos.

He may need a phone, since nowadays is really useful if he goes somewhere, but not an expensive one, but if he just want it to play games, then is better a console.

I let my kids play Angry Birds on my PSP. It's also on PC's. It's not only for iOS and Android based devices.

Why not... it's not like he is going to be able to connect it to a line and get charged.

Ultimately, he will have a block of plastic capable of dialing 911... so that's a plus.

P.S. I have three kids 4, 6, and 14 respectively. My 14 year old has had her phone since she was ten (with extremely strict limitations), and I have honestly debated getting my six year old a phone just for the games to keep him occupied while driving long distances, etc.

Buy one of the small tablets. (for example Samsung galaxy tab or note series. In the long run it will be far cheaper. No 20 to 50 dollar monthly costs for a phone that they do not need.

The tabs and notes are pretty much just like the phones except no calling. Heck they even have wifi so can be used to send text messages and other stuff when connected to a router.

I'm not a fan of kids having cell phones.

I totally for it, the more time he will spend with his new phone the less MP games on PC will suffer.

Yeah... no. Not only is a smartphone exclusively for gaming just a crappy gameboy, but you're also going to be enabling him in thinking he can get whatever he wants. Both for his sake, as well as your own, i'd suggest either saying no, or offering a more kid/game-minded alternative. a nintendo DS can't be that expencive any more?

Depends on the country, although I would totally get a Nintendo DS if I had the money.

order bootleg from china, along with an r4 card? =P hardest part of that is the waiting period (seriously, chinas postal service is staffed by lazy pandas or something)

edit: no i totally do not condone cheating or piracy in any form or way. i simply state that it's an option that exists.

Comment has been collapsed.

I know. It's just an option :P.

I'd get an R4 just to try games out and buy them if I like them, though. Gotta admit I've played most games I was interested in on different emulators a few years ago, but I would replay them if I had the console and the games (Ace Attorney franchise; Castlevania; Nostalgia).

Smartphone as a mobile gaming console for 10 year old - really bad idea in my opinion.

PSP is a better idea.

Let parents decide. We live in 21st century. But your parents (or u) should check his phone (games, applications, calls, search) time to time.

If you buy him a phone at 10 you'll only be cementing the idea that you must have something to occupy yourself with 24 hours a day. Never be bored for even a few seconds, why daydream or self-reflect when you can whip out a phone and crush some candy? It's ok to not be able to concentrate on something for more than a minute, look at this wacky Vine of a dog being hit in the nuts!

Buy him a 3DS or 3DS XL with big screen, or a 2DS(same thing but without 3D feature, just 109€), very good thing with really cool games.

He will at least play good games, not typical popular smartphone useless games, I'm really sad seeing lots of kids these days stuck in the "Angry Birds" culture and other free shitty meaningless android games, or kids who play PC/big console games, that they consider "games for real man" like CoD, manipulated by some shitty company that cares only about money and not quality.

You're neither his parent nor guardian. Your parents have every right to get mad at you if you buy him something you already know they don't want him to have.

Don't give him a smartphone, especially without a data plan. It's not like he'll know how to use it or need it anyway. Smartphones are for people with lots of things to do.

Getting him a PSP is okay though.

NO.
A smartphone only for games? Talk him into a second-hand 3DS (or a Vita, if he preferes). Don't let him play crappy mobile games, please. T__T
Also he wants the phone to watch porn: he WILL find a sim to use, rest assured. :)

EDIT: maybe talk with your parents. If he's determined to get something for himself and he saved money for it, maybe they could agree on a hand-held console.

Actualy mobile gaming is better tha vita and 3ds.It haves so much more content, not only casual games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Those games you call "casual" for 3DS and Vita imo are a big way better than any smartphone games, and also tons of indie games are available on PC besides ANdroid, iOS, so you can play them in your PC instead of smartphone, you can't so same thing with 3DS or Vita, since most of the really good games are exclusive, and there is no emulators.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

See the thing is what you are saying is wrong. The same crappy indie platformers can be found on all platforms.Me personaly dont like mario and zelda, whitch makes the 3ds useless.Vita haves capacity of running real games and yet the only 2 games that are not crappy and indie are Killzone and Borderlands 2.

On smarthone you can play:Gta 3,VC,San andreas,Bioshock,Max Payne or you can install PS1,PSP,Dreamcast and all kind of nintendo emulators(3ds,N64,NES,there even is a Gamecube/Wii emulator in development.)

I will never recommend to play games on a 3.5-4.5" display with "touch-sticks".
And I hope he'll get to play those games on PC when he's old enough.
In the end it's a matter of the boy's taste, whether he likes the games on a platform or not.

I love bigger screens too, and instead of touch-sticks you can use your finger on the 3DS, and Vita has a larger touch screen. You can connect/plug your 3DS to a monitor, and there is a software to have the screen on there, I think(not sure) even the touch feature is used by mouse clicks, done by automatically inputting coordinates, you lose the 3D feature unless you have a 3D monitor, same for PSVita, I don't know about the touch feature if its available, but you can plug it to your PC and play using that monitor. These things are made by third parties, but still, you can do that, but yeah you have to buy these consoles which normally makes it not worth.

But sadly most of these games won't come to PC ever(unless emulators come someday), or it will take too long to these companies to stop releasing their small consoles and start making all sequels for the PC.

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know what means "Vita haves capacity of running real games" but it has tons of great titles, same as Nintendo 3DS.

Those games and emulators you say you can play on smartphone are available on PC too, which makes this games not exclusive, and I was talking about exclusive games that use features of their devices to make games awesome, and since I can play them on PC and I will have better gaming experience, for example for games ported to Android/iOS I would prefer PC, because of controls, graphics, performance, mods, bigger screen, etc, for emulators I prefer PC too because for example playing PSP or DS games on my Nexus 5 sucks a lot.

You have more games on Android obviously, but for me the quality is on 3DS because I love Nintendo games and on Vita since there are tons of cool J-RPG titles.

Also 3DS emulator doesn't exist even on PC, and far less on Android/iOS :/ so you are wrong about that.
