Most of these games aren't just cash grabs; they actually add new content to it. The only game I can think of off the top of my head at the moment is Stealth Bastard Deluxe. The free version is on the internet.

Papers Please & octodad also had free "demo" versions

This is an example. Adds nothing compared to the free version.

Binding of Isaac, from what I've heard. I hadn't heard of it before Steam, but apparently people thought the Steam version wasn't worthwhile (disclaimer: I love that game).

There is a demo and a "Most Unholy Edition" but one is a... demo, and the other is just content that was never ported to Steam. It was never F2P, from what I know about him Edmund would never do that before a paid release.

Windosill and Draw a Stickman EPIC come to mind, but the free versions don't contain the full games.

Team Fortress was originally free. It was eventually remade as Team Fortress 2, which sold on Steam for $20. Seems like a decent example, actually.

Team Fortress was originally a mod, that's why it was free (like all mods). Now of course it was successful enough that they decided to make a standalone sequel out of it (many years later). I don't think this fits the description of what the OP was asking about at all -- a game that was once free but no longer is.

I don't think so. The original post asked for free games which became paid or shareware games, and this seems to fit the bill perfectly. Otherwise you would also be excluding the vast majority of the other games suggested in this thread: Super Meat Boy, Stealth Bastard Deluxe, Counter Strike, Eversion, Spelunky HD, No Time to Explain and so on.

TF Mod, Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2 are completely different games just in the same series.

CS was a mod too and it was never free....ricochet (or something like that) again a mod...team fortress 1 was a mod but as far as i know it wasn't free only on torrents, same as counter-strike.

That's not true. Counter-Strike was originally a free mod for Half-Life way back in the day. Of course Valve then acquired it and turned it into a commercial product. Also, the original Team Fortress (which was a mod for Quake 1/Quakeworld) absolutely was free and still is -- I would know, I played it for years.

Considering there are countless of "private" servers you may stumbled upon a p2p one, since the official MU is still up and running and still F2P with store

Plague Inc? It's free on the Play Store for Androids lolz :/
Disregarding the in app purchases of course.

Formerly, Tiny Thief, which is kind of a shame, since it looks like a nice game -- holding out for it to be bundled... hopefully in an Android + PC Humble.

The previous games were free. Survivors was intended to be a pay game, I've only seen alpha copy on sites, the kind of thing used to show it off.

I know of one.

Its called Ace of Spades.
Originally a free to play game.

IT WAS? i didnt know that.. it was free but non steam right?

Sort of (there is some "pay for" premium content), but like most of the free flash games, it's not so great having to play it in a small window/area. The Steam version allows you to play in HD resolutions, integrates achievements into Steam, and also has a new free campaign as an update coming soon.

Ace of Spades, Spelunky, Cave Story, La Mulana, Stealth Bastard, NEStalgia, likely some others.

LaMulana is one for sure. You can still find the old/free version.

You can still also get Original/Classic versions of Spelunky and Cave Story, not sure about the others.

not sure(thats why i mentioned it, to see if somebody'd clarify), thought i read something awhile ago about the + guy(the guy who bought it) being a dick or the creator being unhappy or he got cut out or something.
edit- the italicized text was added later for clarification of who "the + guy" was

This is correct, though towards final launch I think they did add a little "Buy into beta" thing for people who didn't already have keys. I believe they also got a few items to go along with it in-game though.

You can play the demo for free, which includes two levels and one character.

When a freeware game is turned into shareware/paid-for.....
is it at the behest of the developer, publisher, or less likely, a specific digital distributor?
Nay, furthermore, please provide a list of free-to-paid games on Steam.
Thanks leave your tips.
