When a freeware game is turned into shareware/paid-for.....
is it at the behest of the developer, publisher, or less likely, a specific digital distributor?

Nay, furthermore, please provide a list of free-to-paid games on Steam.

Thanks leave your tips.

Most of these games aren't just cash grabs; they actually add new content to it. The only game I can think of off the top of my head at the moment is Stealth Bastard Deluxe. The free version is on the internet.

False.

From the developer about the Steam version:
"There are 15 more bonus levels in this version, and HD graphics, Steam achievements etc :)"

Well actually, graphics means textures and stuff. HD resolution is the term they should have used...

Binding of Isaac, from what I've heard. I hadn't heard of it before Steam, but apparently people thought the Steam version wasn't worthwhile (disclaimer: I love that game).

There is a demo and a "Most Unholy Edition" but one is a... demo, and the other is just content that was never ported to Steam. It was never F2P, from what I know about him Edmund would never do that before a paid release.

Team Fortress was originally free. It was eventually remade as Team Fortress 2, which sold on Steam for $20. Seems like a decent example, actually.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Team Fortress was originally a mod, that's why it was free (like all mods). Now of course it was successful enough that they decided to make a standalone sequel out of it (many years later). I don't think this fits the description of what the OP was asking about at all -- a game that was once free but no longer is.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think so. The original post asked for free games which became paid or shareware games, and this seems to fit the bill perfectly. Otherwise you would also be excluding the vast majority of the other games suggested in this thread: Super Meat Boy, Stealth Bastard Deluxe, Counter Strike, Eversion, Spelunky HD, No Time to Explain and so on.

But in case of CS is one that could be on list. TF is still free and TF2 was completely different from it...

TF Mod, Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2 are completely different games just in the same series.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

CS was a mod too and it was never free....ricochet (or something like that) again a mod...team fortress 1 was a mod but as far as i know it wasn't free only on torrents, same as counter-strike.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not true. Counter-Strike was originally a free mod for Half-Life way back in the day. Of course Valve then acquired it and turned it into a commercial product. Also, the original Team Fortress (which was a mod for Quake 1/Quakeworld) absolutely was free and still is -- I would know, I played it for years.

I played this Korean MMORPG called Mu Online, it was free to play. Played it on and off from 2003-2005. Then it became P2P sometime after 2005.

Considering there are countless of "private" servers you may stumbled upon a p2p one, since the official MU is still up and running and still F2P with store

I'm pretty sure that KSP was never intended to be free, it's just that it was so early in development before that they regularly rolled out updates to the demo build.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

^This is true. Pre 0.14 it was free as a demo. 0.14 and everything after is the paid version.

Source: I just started watching Kurtjmac's KSP commentaries, he mentions this somewhere in the first 3 episodes.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah KSP was free pre 0.14 and If I remember correctly, it was not a demo. If I remember even more correctly they said if would forever be free but I could be wrong and they only said that for the specific 0.14 version.

kingdom rush, but its totally worth it, and you can still play free version on Armorgames or kongregate.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sort of (there is some "pay for" premium content), but like most of the free flash games, it's not so great having to play it in a small window/area. The Steam version allows you to play in HD resolutions, integrates achievements into Steam, and also has a new free campaign as an update coming soon.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

what sucks though is the pay version still has the additional microtransaction premium crap

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably because it went from Flash -> App -> Steam. It gradually got more and more into capitalizing on the franchise success. I originally beat the entire thing when it first came out on Kong.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well I can't speak for mobile versions since I'm not into that, but the free flash version I believe has/had a one time fee to upgrade to premium, and the new Steam version has absolutely none of that microtransactions nonsense (I own it).

not sure(thats why i mentioned it, to see if somebody'd clarify), thought i read something awhile ago about the + guy(the guy who bought it) being a dick or the creator being unhappy or he got cut out or something.

edit- the italicized text was added later for clarification of who "the + guy" was

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Pixel has never been a dick.
Only negative thing I remember is that Nicalis (who now owns Cave Story) put the fan mods (they actually did take them, and not recreate them) from Cave Story into Cave Story+ and didn't give the creators credit

Counter-Strike was a mod for Half-life which got picked up by Valve and then fed to the cash cow for profit and here we have micro transactions for freaking weapon skins with some costing 8 dollars in the latest Counter-Strike. So yay!

You don't have to buy the skins they just make the weapons look different.

Because weapons skins radically alter the gameplay and give severe advantage to people who buy them...
